He averaged 2.5 FTAs per game. That’s 1.2 attempts  fewer than Kyrie, who shied away from contact.

For a team that has generally relied too much on jumpers, I worry about how he’d fit.

Yeah, this is by far the most concerning aspect of his offensive game. I can live with a guard in his early 20’s not being the near 50/40/90 guy Kyrie is, but that free throw rate is shocking.

One thing I’ve liked about our picks is that our first 3 were all really good at getting to the line. Obviously this can take a while to translate to the NBA, but their aggression is definitely there.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

good point been hearing that from others recently about Russell,  we need offense that can get to the bucket and defense to protect that area on the opposite end ....he is neither.

for me   is like fifth or sixth on the list of wants at best .

A center ( good one ).  young enough to start every game .....then a nice player to take Kyries place .

Unfortunately he'd fit in really well.  Has Stevens ever challenged players to get to the basket?

He's still young (23 y/o) with room to improve. I'd still love to sign him and he'd be my #1 priority (not Kemba) if we're going after a star-caliber guard in FA.

isn't he kind of a knucklehead? got sent out of LA bc of that thing w swaggy P and his fiancé ? seems kind of full of himself, a headcase. this is what worries me the most. don't want to replace one head case ( kyrie ) w another.

kemba seems like the more professional and less risky option

but i admit i haven't followed russell closely.
bc he sounded like a clown from afar.

Looking at the shot breakdown and FTA of a few other scoring point guards for comparison, ya D'Angelo Russell seems extremely low here:

% of shots 0-3 ft (last season / career avg) and FTA (last season / career avg)

Kyrie:  .226/.254, 3.7/4.4
D'Angelo: .137/.155, 2.5/2.6
Kemba: .252/.256, 5.5/4.7
Westbroook: .361/.351, 6.2/7.1
Harden: .235/.274, 11.0/8.5
Curry: .142/.171, 4.2/4.0
Lillard: .297/.276, 6.4/5.8

Man I hate to watch it, but Harden is truly amazing at what he does drawing fouls.  He takes a similar amount of shots from 0-3 feet as Kyrie/Kemba, but takes 2x-3x the FTA.  And then you have guys like Westbrook and Lillard who take a much larger % of shots from 0-3 feet (Westbrook significantly more), and Harden still takes almost double the FTA.  Hate the way it's called, but no ones better at getting the refs to blow that whistle.

Unlike Kyrie though - who is so highly skilled with his handle he can easily avoid the contact to make up for his average athleticism - I think Russell isn't nearly as skilled with his ballhandling to make up for his subpar athleticism, making it more difficult for him to get past his man and into the lane to draw contact. Now he makes up for that with his good shooting and pull-up abilities, but I think that will be a consistent problem for him his whole career, even more so than someone like Kyrie.

Ugh, it feels icky even making that kind of positive statement about Kyrie at this point.

well, we could talk about how inefficient he is on offense. or, how his defense is worse the kyrie's. or what a less-than-charming teammate he has been.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
