I just went through the list of the best small forwards. I see elements of Dr J, Grant Hill, obv Truth, and Rudy Gay (an offensively gifted player).

At 20, Tatum might already be good enough that he's not compared to other players, but other players should be compared to him. He's an absolute home run by Danny, as was Jaylen Brown, and Terry Rozier.

It's hard not to get excited about his future.

Floor: Otto Porter Jr.
Ceiling: Kevin Durant

He’s already exceeded that floor hasn’t he?

lol...exactly

Otto Porter Jr. making 25 plus million per season

what was the Wizards GM smokin when he made this signing??

I still like Granger floor and Grant Hill Ceiling

If he can score 40-50 and totally take over plus grow another inch or two... I would say Durant is his ceiling

I think his ceiling is  Clyde Drexler/ Grant Hill/ James Worthy (purposely smaller to bigger).    When Tatum improves his passing and gets a little more meat on the bones, he's going to be ridiculous.  Tatum may be able to play 2, 3 or 4.

Floor for Tatum is difficult because the presumption has to be that he will not improve.  Who is he now?  How about Xavier McDaniel circa early 90's.

Grant Hill is too low a ceiling, IMO. I think Tatum can be a complete player like Hill was, but he's already a much better shooter than Hill ever was, in a league that values the 3 much more now than when Hill was at his peak.

I can't really think of a good comparison, but I don't think opining Durant is too far off base. Durant averaged 21 as a rookie, but he was far and away the best option on his team.

I think his floor is Alex English or George Gervin. Both were smooth and long.  Tatum may be a bit taller as both Gervin and English were listed at 6-7.

That's a HOF floor.

That's a HOF floor.
If his floor is a multiple time All-Star scoring champ I'd be very scared about his ceiling.

Floor: Rashard Lewis

Ceiling: Grant Hill with range
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I don't think Tatum has a floor, he's all ceiling!

Ceiling: Hybrid version of Paul Pierce + Kevin Durant  8)

(Note: Never *explicitly* said just Pierce in this ceiling prediction)

Ceiling: Slightly less athletic, but equally effective Tracey McGrady ... with a longer peak and career.

Floor: More likeable, longer Kobe Bryant.

highlights from todays game

Tatum ability to drive/use either hand is special. Especially for a forward. Not many at the NBA level can do it.  Those 3s in JR Smith and Thompsons face , was epic.

  • Yup
Hopefully the floor is rookie year Jayson Tatum, and the ceiling is Kevin Durant with a better "take it to the hole" skill set and mentality.  His variety of scary good skills, floor smarts, and ability/willingness to step up in big moments are really tantalizingly impressive at 20.
Yup

Yeah, those threes were ice cold. If he can work at using screens to pull up from three he's unstoppable
