Excuse my ignorance but if Kyrie's contract was off the books wouldn't there be some way to fit Conley into our cap?

Unfortunately, no that isn't possible.

If we signed-and-traded Kyrie to NYK (once he stated he was going there), does that create a large trade exception? Might that fit Conley?

I haven’t kept up on the S&T rules. Would this affect our cap flexibility?
I believe Conley's contract is too large to do that.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I'm pretty sure we could S&T Rozier and/or Morris to a big 1 year deal, and ship them out to match salaries..

Mike Zarren (Saltlover) should reappear soon to sort it all out.

S&T have to be at least 3 year deals.

and due to being over the cap we could only take back half the salary of the outgoing value, so in order to bring in Conley the combined outgoing salary would need to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 million.

I think Conley is around $32.5 million, and the max slot for Kyrie is projected to be around $32.7 million.  So, maybe?

If Kyrie walks, then the team looks towards the future and needs a younger PG than Conley.

I would make a hard push after Kemba if he decides he wants out. Charlotte will need something in return for a loss of Kemba and I think that Rozier would be an attractive piece for them.

So a deal centered around Rozier, filler and one of the later picks for Kemba makes sense. Then use other assets to upgrade the Center spot. (Brown, Morris S&T) - looking at Bamba, Turner
(This Hinges on Kemba wanting the Celtics and wanting to help Charlotte out by allowing, and charlotte wanting a sign and trade to happen)

Kemba
Smart
Tatum
Horford
Baynes

And if No Kyrie, then No Davis. so I instead would look long and hard into a deal for Bamba (Vuc will be going back to Orlando, I dont see any doubt of that) or put out feelers on Turner.

Personally, I think Bamba has alot of upside and a lower cost as Orlando still has some pretty big holes that Boston can fill. (Rozier S&T for Bamba.

Then I would just keep Smart or Brown as the PG and let Hayward actually run the offense and have smart or brown just defend the lead guard on the opposing team and go into the season with that and reassess a few months in. Draft would most likely net a nice young SF (Little, reddish, Rui, Doumbouya)

Brown
Hayward
Tatum
Horford
Bamba

Bench
Wanamaker
Smart
Semi - Draft
Morris
Baynes

Team easily makes playoffs IMO, and maintains alot of asset moving forward.

I would also heavily pursue Beal as well.

Beal can run an offense and is quick enough to defend Point Guards if needed.

So you could have either

Beal
Brown
Tatum
(With Smart and Hayward)

or

Smart
Beal
Tatum
(With Brown and Hayward)

I'm a big fan of Conley's game and believe he would be an excellent fit in Boston if Kyrie left.  Assuming the Celtics could make the cap work in a trade, my concern is that the window to contend doesn't really line up with Conley's contact and age.  Tatum and/or Brown would need to become perennial All-Star caliber players starting next year.  My fear that is they would hit their peaks right when Conley starts to decline.

Theoretically, we could.

But I just don't see Kyrie doing us that favor if it came down to it.

There would need to be a reason for it to happen.  Maybe the Knicks want to get rid of some dead weight or want some of our other pieces, so we do two separate trades or something (or perhaps get it combined).  Where we sign and trade Kyrie and end up with some other players switching positions like say Yab and Williams for Frankie N or something like that.  Then maybe just trade Memphis back its pick for Conley and absorb him into cap space.

So post-trades

PG - Conley, Ntkilina
SG - Smart, Brown
SF - Hayward
PF - Tatum, Semi
C - Horford, Baynes

Still have the three 1st rounders and can bring back Morris.  I think that team would be on par with our current team if Conley stays healthy as he adds a level of defense that the team is missing from that spot.  Overall if Irving leaves that wouldn't be a bad set of moves to keep the team at or near the same level.

Kemba or Conley probably not going to happen

The Celtics are well over the salary cap. They can sign Irving because he's already on the team. If he leaves they don't suddenly have 30+ million of cap space. They would have to release players to create cap space.

Kemba would be nice but I don't see it happening

Conley is way too injury prone.

I think it makes too much sense for Irving to sign with Boston anyway. It makes sense for both the team and the player. I think they'll get it done.

I love these trade ideas  and signing proposals completely ignorant of cap space.   NOT!
