Kyrie was terrific tonight.  Great game.  He's been rising to the occasion in key games.  40+ against both the Raptors and Sixers in overtime victories and then a huge game tonight.  That's what you want from your star player.  We just lack consistency from everyone else on the roster.  Need a second star to step up.

This. In an ideal world it would be Gordon - who also had a nice game last night - but his confidence is up and down. Hopefully, he can continue off of what he did last night.

It's more important for Kyrie to know and trust his teammates than worry about the type of pass it is. There is a difference in being a willing passer verses a necessity passer.

Lonzo and Ben Simmons are necessity passers because they don't have the confidence to shoot and can't shoot.

Harden used his passes as a tool in his scoring box. Everything derives off of his scoring and his shot.

Bron passes because he enjoys making the right basketball play. He's a willing passer.

Kyrie has to become a willing passer and not just when he gets in trouble because he can't score on a possession. Sometimes the setup and iso and pass is the best play. If this team ever shares the ball like the Warriors it's going to be lights out for other teams.

I stated it in the game thread, but Kyrie is really Nash 2.0.

Fantastic scorers
Fantastic playmakers
fast
crafty
professional
not great defenders.

Now Nash was arguably a slighty better shooter and a more willing passer, but Kyrie is more athletic and has a tighter handle.

But when Kyrie looks to playmake a bit more like last night he is un-guardable. when he gets inside or around his man, which is easy for him, it really opens the floor for himself and more importantly the team.

Last night was nice because team made shots, which will encourage Kyrie.

He needs to FORCE people to be involved through playmaking. If he continues that look out. Last nights Kyrie was an MVP.

I disagree, but I get that you are emphasizing that Irving could be a much better playmaker. Irving is a much better defender than Nash. He is also a much better scorer.

I wonder if you put Irving in Houston's system, what kind of stats he would put up, but I don't think he makes the advanced reads as naturally as Nash did. A lot of Irving's assists last night were simple dump offs where Ibaka was caught in no-man's land between Irving and his man, and the corner help defender didn't get down quick enough. Irving still made great reads, but he is developing his ability to make the second and third read in response to the team defense.

He is getting there, its the guy he should emulate.

Nash never became Nash until his 9th year, prior to that he wasn't reading the advance plays like 9th year nash. IMO being a Canadian and closely watching Nash's entire career, at the same point in their careers, Kyrie has better instincts.

Looking at their 8th season together, Nash had only a 3% higher Assist rate, but Kyrie was better in everthing other than offensive win shares.

comparing at the same age, Kyrie has the better Assist% and the better Turnover%.

Kyries instincts have improve, and are on an upward trend.

He has been making progress in that area.

Its a beautiful thing to see.

I think Kyrie would average around 30ppg and 8apg in that system.

Maybe in a year or 2, but this season it has to be Gordon. He's a guy who can create for himself and for others right now.

I'm not convinced that they need a "2nd star" in order to get through the Eastern Conference.  The ceiling is still VERY high on this team if Hayward and Tatum can find consistency ie. hitting open shots, playing with aggressiveness, making the right reads, playing with purpose etc.  The same goes for Jaylen Brown.

They don't necessarily need a 2nd 20 PPG scorer in order to make a playoff run.  If they do, it means that the team never truly found its mojo.

If Hayward or Tatum can find consistency, they'll trend towards being a 20ppg scorer. I think to win in this league, you need a secondary guy who can get you in the range of 17-20 on a night in, night out basis.

That's part of the reason I don't really fear Toronto in a playoff series. Yes, they have Kawhi but there's a bunch of question marks behind him. Now Milwaukee? They make me uneasy. Giannis is going to be a problem - we know that - but you also have to gameplan for Khris Middleton.

I'm even more impressed by Kyrie's game last night because he didn't start out great. He was turning it over and had a couple of miscues with Al early but he stayed focused and came up huge in the clutch. And the best part was, not just getting his own shots but after he nailed that huge 3, he had 3 straight assists to put the game to bed.

I'm excited to have him around for a while and see him keep getting even better.
