Title: The 2018 NBA Draft Prospects playing on TV Today, We Can Dream, thread:Ongoing
Post by: csfansince60s on December 05, 2017, 12:32:10 PM
We all know the story: we currently have the 30th pick of the Draft, and that's it. Not much to get real excited about at the moment, but we could get lucky with the Fakers pick, yes we can dream, and who knows if a second round pick could eventually come our way in some sort of deal, so it doesn't hurt to get conversant with the Draft prospects out there.

Last year I updated this thread daily due to all the picks we had. I will attempt to do the same this year despite our current draft status. Who knows, anything can happen.

Also, bear with me as I get up to speed on the potential draftees. With no Draftexpress to help me tease out the prospects, I'm sure I'll miss some and include others that shouldn't be listed. Also, please make suggestions as to whom I should include.

Todays Prospects on TV tonight, 12/5:

7:00 BTN      Mich St.                  Jarren Jackson Jr. (2), Miles Bridges (22)

7:00 ESPN.   'Nova/Gonzaga.       Mikal Bridges (25)/ Rui Hachimura (21),Jonathan Wms. (3)

7:00 ESPN2.  Texas.                    Bamba (4)

9:00 ESPNU  Duke.                    Bagley (35), Allen (3), Trent (2), Duval (1), Carter (34), Bolden(20)

TP....Williams vs Ayton should be interesting. Hope they are battling each other, but I can see Trocha-Morelos and Davis also on Ayton.

Bit off-topic, but what sites are people here using for draft/scouting news and analysis, now that DraftExpress is no more?

(Nbadraft.net is no good in my opinion, so I’m looking for something else.)

How has Bamba looked this year so far? Will he be a decent enough consolation prize at 5?

I use to keep nbadrafttiers.com up. Had a lot of followers, but couldn't figure out a way to monetize to make it worth the amount of time I was taking from my family.

I'm not an expert though.

I'm really unimpressed with anyone past the top 5 this year. Honestly, Grayson Allen is the 6th best player in this draft.

Michael Porter has some legit questions about his game. From what I've heard he may be unlikely to go into the draft this year anyway.

For me, it goes 1) Doncic 2) Bagley 3) Ayton 4) Bamba 5) Porter.

I really like a kid from UCLA named Kris Wilkes. I also think the wing from Kentucky is a good prospect - Kevin Knox. I know Allen is a head case, but he has the ability to be a better Evan Fournier. Miles Bridges, Robert Williams, Trae Young, and Isaac Bonga (Germany) round out the top 12 to me.

High end comparisons might help you see how I gauge them so far.

Doncic - Better Gordan Hayward (plays with great pace and body control, but has better court vision)
Bagley - Chris Bosh (lean crafty scorer from the inside and outside)
Ayton - Jermaine O'neil (a bit rigid, but great body with a pretty good feel)
Bamba - Gobert/Steven Adams (defensive centrifuge with limited offensive feel)
Porter - Rashard Lewis/Kris Middleton (great scoring instincts)
Allen - Oladipo/Fournier (great shot creator whose game should be even better with an open court in the pros)
Wilkes - Trevor Arize-heavy (really good athlete with great defensive instincts and raw driving power)
Knox - Rudy Gay (scorer)
Bridges - Julius Randle (crafty left hander with passing and defensive potential)
Williams - Cody Zeller with shot blocking (developing feel for helping the offense keep moving and a good defensive instincts although lazy)
Trae Young - Jrue Holliday (crafty high volume scorer with pretty good court vision)
Isaac Bonga - Nic Batum (great physique and court vision)

I like some of your comparisons. But I really do at the same time, dislike how we try to fit player's mold into cookie-cutting. Doncic doesn't seem like any player I've seen play from Euro, his skillset offensively is just light years ahead of his college peers in the NCAA, and definitely above most professional European players. That being said, while his skill and his vision is extremely high, and he's very young, I definitely have question marks about what his best position would be, and his defense.

And why do you have Grayson Allen as the 6th best player over Trae Young, who's having a stellar season? Just curious, I'm very high on Bagley, who I think will eventually get the KAT treatment.

Watching this Texas game. Bamba just shot free throws and certainly looked competent doing so. His shot looked decently smooth for his age and size.

I like Bamba at #5 if that's the pick we get.

But out of Ayton, Doncic, Bagley, Bamba, and Porter, I'm not AS high on Bamba as I am the others. And I'm aware Porter has the injury, but of course I'm assuming the doctors clear him and there's no big red flags going forward (hence, a good #4 pick IF that's where we land w/Lakers Pick).

The Stepien is a decent new site.  They have Bagley at #9 so they kind of lose some credibility there but they go pretty in-depth with analysis and do podcasts frequently.

TP, sorry I was in a procedure since you posted this, as I would have been all over it haha.  I've been waiting for this thread. I like to keep tabs on alot of the young players regardless of whether or not the Celtics have a shot at them.

Everyone has talked the top 5 to death. I like Jaren Jackson, and Robert Williams as players worthy of our attention. Especially Robert Williams. He has every tool that we could use. 6'9 with a 7'5.5 wingspan, and nasty hops with a good motor. Couple that with good touch from 20 feet, and we have a good shadow for Horford.

Due to my schedule, I love reading our blogs interpretations of a players output in real time. I feel it's pertinent considering draft express is behind an ESPN Paywall now.

PS- I don't know about most, but I try to shower TPs on informative threads. Csfan is a real MVP  :)

I've like Robert Williams when I've seen him before, but he's been almost invisible tonight.

Ayton has looked good.  Big, all around game, good footwork in the post.

Bill Walton needs to go.  He's out of his mind... even more than usual.

I can't say that either Williams or Ayton were that impressive.  Williams had a decent 2nd half after doing nothing in the first.  Ayton flashed the skills, but doesn't dominate.  Weak on the defensive end.

Bill Walton on the other hand is the best there ever was.

Williams scored just 4 points.  I just noticed that's his fourth straight game with 4 points.  He's barely involved in the offense.  I expected a lot more in his sophomore year.

Walton sometimes makes me laugh and sometimes irritates me.  Tonight was the latter as he was just way out there.  With about 30 seconds left and during play in a close game, he was going on about the play by play guy hating Walton's grandchildren (something about global warming).  He was joking, but it was weird and the wrong time for that.  He also does not know NCAA rules as his partner kept having to explain them.

Agree...Tyler Davis looked like the best player on the floor and definitely outplayed his teammate Williams and Ayton. Felt bad for him with that travel at the very end where he could've sent it to OT.

And Walton is a trip.... makes tha PAC12 Network games fun......acid when in Cali, probably (peyote) buttons in the desert.

I wouldn't doubt that Walton was on peyote tonight... he was in Arizona afterall.

Davis was outstanding tonight.  Ayton looks like he is still trying to fit in and understand his role.  I'm guessing he will look more dominant as the season progresses.

I agree about player comparisons. They fall woefully short in actually scouting a player. That said, as a short summary of the players in a draft class, it can be helpful. Again, you can't reduce a player, because each player has an irreducable complexity ...

For that reason, when I do comparisons, I try to find a player's defining characteristics (normally just 1-2) and find a current successful NBA player with those same characteristics.

I agree with you on Doncic. He's one of the toughest comparisons. I went with Hayward because of the way that both players play at their own steady pace, but both are crafty, deceptively athletic, and able to get to where they want on the court. The think is that Doncic looks like he has much higher upside as a passer.

As far as Allen goes, I'm a sucker for lateral explosiveness (changing direction, jumping off one foot, eurosteps, etc.). Its one of the underrated athletic abilities in the NBA. Grayson Allen is a pretty good athlete, but his lateral explosiveness is elite. Combine that with his shooting and scoring knack and his NBA size for NBA two-guard, and I think he is a really underrated prospect. There are definitely other concerns with him, but his basketball abilities are special, and there is something to be said about playing and starring for Coach K.

I haven't seen enough of Young, but I do like him. I don't see the same kind of athleticism with Young, and so far, he hasn't been a great shooter. I will be really interested to see him in Big 12 play against Kansas, Texas, etc. If he has big games against NBA level athletes, then he might continue to rise on my list.

Another guy who might sneak into the top 5 if someone falls is Jaren Jackson. 8 blocks tonight.

Really like Williams but he made a dumb decision to go back to school.  He could end up being a steal in the draft.

Washington dismantling the Jayhawks under new coach Hopkins in kAnsas.

Glad for the Huskies and Hopkins, long time Boeheim assistant.

Their coach last year was horrific....team had NO life....think that their overrated guard whose name rhymes with Schultz had something to do with it too. :D

Crisp, Thybulle and Dickerson all Juniors had huge games. Seems like Fultz didn't do much to make those talented guys better.

Hopkins called Crisp a leader in the post game, making sure he was by his side in the interview. Fultz was no leader.

The ref changed the outcome of the game with a few minutes left. Bagley made a strong move to the whole, have a gentle shoulder to the defender and scored.

That was weak. He's an NBA player making an NBA move, maybe these super talents should go straight to the league.

Charles Matthews of Michigan needs to be added to this list.  He’s a slasher/defense wing who’s jumper is a work in progress but improving.  Is also a secondary ball-handler.  He’s a redshirt sophomore after sitting out last year, having transferred from Kentucky where he was a top-50 recruit.  Averaging 15/5/4 after today’s game (20/8/3 line vs. UCLA).

Am I the only one interested in Vic Law of Northwestern?  Not that this will happen, of course, but it'd be pretty funny to see Boston draft a guy who looks like the love child of Adrian Dantley and A.C. Green, lol .

TP for the suggestion.

We'll give him an audition/tryout on Thursday. NW is playing Valparaiso at 8 on the BTN.

Keep me posted on how he plays.

Haven't seen him in the top 60 of any mocks I've seen yet.

Trae young putting up 21 with 6 assists and 0 turnovers before the half against #3 Wichita State.  He may not be the best prospect, but it would be reasonable to argue he's having the best season.

I'd be great with that.

Agressive on D, especially it seems for televised games.

Also rolls aggressively to the rim on P&Rs and does crash the boards.

Not much of a shooter yet for Brad's system.

TP to konkmv and footey for posting in the thread.

There are other risers too who could potentially crack the top 5: Jarren Jackson of MSU and Collin Sexton of 'Bama come to mind...and there will be others.

Plus there's talk of Porter staying there with his father and brother.

VERY impressive stat line of 22/15/8.... 8 blocks!!!......vs a quality, nationally ranked conference foe!!!

Watching KU Texas, Bamba looking dominant with 16 points and 5 blocks in the first half.  Going up against a legit big in Azubuike.  Showing the 3 point range as well.  Very impressed.

Mo Bamba almost had a triple double.

VERY impressive stat line of 22/15/8.... 8 blocks!!!......vs a quality, nationally ranked conference foe!!!

If Bamba can add some serious mass to his frame, he could be the ultimate prize if we miss one of Ayton/Bagley/Doncic.

Surprised, and disappointed, that the UA-ASU game isn't on national TV.  Duke-FSU and Oklahoma-TCU will be good consolation prizes though.

Real surprised too....game of the year so far to me.

I’m lucky I get the PAC 12N....got to see a lot of Jaylen and Rabb and Chriss two years ago and Fultz last year.

Fultz didn’t impress me but admittedly neither did Jaylen. In fairness to both of them though, they both had really sucky coaches who stunted their development.

Fantastic game by Bagley today - 32 points, 21 boards against FSU.

I expect he’s going to be great at the next level; some of his drives remind me of Tatum, the way he can use his length and long arms to get around defenders. Love his motor, too.

The way he is doing most of his work makes it a little hard to to be completely sure about him. Watch him on offense and a lot of the time he camps on the block waiting for an entry pass to come in or a shot to go up. He doesn’t do much boxing out; a lot of the time he’s just jumping over guys to get a board. And on D, Duke plays a lot of zone. Still, I think there’s plenty there to work with. Put him in a pro system and I think he can be special.

Bagley is quite skilled, but has plenty of upside. He's the clear no1 target with the Lakers pick..

Anybody see the ASU/AZ game? I know it was on PAC12N.

Wow...lived up to the hype.

Ayton 23/19/3.....killer.

Trier 18 second half points.

Tra Holder 31 for ASU.....

High Level of competition.

This was in Tucson… Lets see what happens when they play at Tempe.

That's a for sure.

With conference play having just started, lots of teams/players have been feeding on teams who are just schedule filler, for the most part, although there have been a few good non-conference games.

Now is the time we will start to get a clearer picture of players' values.

I'll be at this game. I'm also keeping an eye on Nick Weiler-Babb for the Cyclones. He's the brother of former Red Claws and Celtics (briefly) player Chris Babb. Babb isa 6'6'' athletic point guard with good court vision.

Bamba should dominate tonight. The Cyclones have no one on the front line who can matchup with him.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Enjoy the game and TP for the post. Looking forward to hearing your first-hand scouting report!!

I will include him from now on. I almost did, because he does have great numbers. I didn't know about his athleticism, but what concerned me was that he originally played for Arkansas in the '14-15 season for  a very brief time (just a couple of games, I think), and then he was out for a year; do you know if it was injury or eligibility issues?

I'll talk to my sister-in-law about it. She would know. I did not know he played for Arkansas.

He is 22 -- so he is an older player. I don't know anything about his personality or eligibility issues, but I do know his numbers and abilities on the basketball court make him intriguing.

Ultimately a disappointing game from an NBA prospect sense. Although it was fun to watch a big 12 OT game.

Bamba did his thing, but disappeared for large portions of the game. He did have two key blocks in overtime to seal it, but there was probably 8 times that his team needed him to gather a rebound to finish a defensive possession, and he failed to do so. He also got man-handled several times by Iowa State muscle -- I wonder what NBA muscle will do to him?

Babb showed me something, but he is not aggressive enough. He is a facilitator on a team that badly needs an aggressive shot creator. He facilitates well. He struggled with his shot a bit, but he had several really impressive drives to the rim. His control of the pick-and-roll game was impressive, but again, his team desperately needs scoring, not facilitating.

Wittington was awful tonight, but Iowa State's offensive scheme doesn't help him (very little off-ball movement). I still think he has good upside, but he won't be a real prospect until 2019 or 2020.

Jones came off the bench in their blitz package and had a couple key plays in the game, but he got yanked pretty quick too. There's something going on with him that is affecting his playing time, but I can't find anything out.

Iowa States two big men, Lard and Young, were both productive and active, but I don't think either shows NBA talent level.

If we can somehow end up with either Jaren Jackson, Mikal Bridges, Bagley, Ayton or Doncic, I'll be satisfied.

Those are players I think will exceed or outperform their expectations.

Those are my choices too. Thrilled to have any of them. Same with Trae Young.

I'm on the fence with Mo Bamba... some days I love him, some days I hate him.

I'm very on the fence about Young. I really feel like pundits and draft scouts are extremely high on him, but I think the last few games showed his main weaknesses. Any tough perimeter defense, (and let's be honest, college defenders really aren't that skilled,) and Young seems to fold or make hasty decisions which lead to high turnovers, and taking tough contested jumpers. And is he really 6'2? He looks a lot smaller in height, and always seems to be one of the smallest guys on the court by the eye test. In the NBA, I don't think his modest lateral quickness and his weak athleticism will let him swing by most defenders in college, the way he does right now. His floater is great, and clearly been fine tuned, but is he really comparable to Steph Curry? Breaking records in college is great and all, but so did JJ Reddick, and Fredette. And even though they both were sharpshooters/scorers, and not main ball handlers, Young seems to take a lot of 3PA's. Green light or not, that has to be a little confusing especially if you're drafting him so high.

I agree.

Don't forget, too, that many of Young's huge games (Like the record 22 assist game vs Northwestern  State?!?!?)came against REAL weak non-conference foes:Omaha, Ball State, Portland, UNT, UTSA, etc).

I'm off the Young train.

I'm convinced that the Oklahoma scheme allows inflated stats for the lead guard. First Hield, now Young.

An analyst said Young was told he could play like he wanted to if he came to Oklahoma.  In Big 12 games, his turnovers are:  7, 6, 8. 4, 9, 12 and 7.

Young is a great college player.  Oklahoma def schemes to get him his 49 shots as any other college team would with a dominating player.  I think the real question is does that domination transfer to the NBA where everyone is 3-6" taller and 40lbs heavier.  Young is talented but I really worry about his size in being able to replicate any of these results.

I am sure people can site Steph Curry as an example, but not many 6'2" guards that can shoot well end up being Steph Curry in the NBA.  Lets see how well he does the rest of the year.  Big12 is brutal this year, by the end of the conf schedule we should know a lot more about him.

Have thought about not doing the thread anymore. Gets a lot of views and few posts for a lot of work.

It IS a lot of work. Hats off to you brother. TP!

Maybe you can do a poll of whether you should continue doing these if you feel your work is underappreciated or overlooked. I dig it but I also know a lot of the prospects but not even close to what you post.

Offensively he reminds me a little of KG when he was younger the way he moves, and can jump out of the gym. He needs to move his feet better on D. He got passed by really easily a couple times, and didn't body the guy up at all. But I'm still hopeful for him or Ayton(who reminds me of David Robinson) a bit.

Yeah, Bagley doesn’t look super quick laterall, but otherwise he looks great. And the “Admiral” is a pretty good comp to Ayton.

Definitely need luck to get either. Gotta hope theFakers dump Clarkson, Randle and whoever else pretty soon.

No

Fakers don't look like they will end of 2-5 this season

You can thank Lavar Ball for lighting a fire...
