Can't see it working out. No one in America watches euro ball and that is where talent is
So we can count America out as viewers. Who is left? Most Africans have a Tv excluding places like south Africa or morocco
Television exists in Africa, and just like everywhere else, they love sport. Millions of Africans watch the World Cup every year.
Obviously football is massive compared to basketball, but clearly there is an enthusiastic viewership which will only grow with more players appearing at the highest level of the sport.
What's interesting is in developing countries in Africa and Asia, many people have bypassed the television, and cable, and those traditional ways of consuming media and are now consuming content on their phones. They have cellphone towers everywhere and data plans, people don't need TVs or cable when they can view things on their phones on demand. Much cheaper all around. They may not always have TVs in remote villages or follow the typical media path that consumers in developed countries do but even the poorest people have smartphones - usually cheaper Chinese ones like Huawei. It's an interesting space that China has been filling.
And as you say millions of Africans watch not just the World Cup, but the African Nations Cup, and World Cup qualifiers in the CAF region. CAF has 56 members all in Africa. Then at club level most African nations have a local soccer league, and the winners of those leagues compete in the CAF Champions League, where the winner of that league then completes in the World Club Challenge. The blueprint is there, soccer created it already. Here are the media broacasters covering the African Champions League (where global viewership for the entire tournament is in the billions):
There's an entire world of consumers out there, outside our country, just waiting to be tapped.
