The Celtics are exploring the possibility of acquiring Kelly Olynyk from the Jazz and are "still trying to learn what it would take" to land the big man in a trade with Utah, Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com reported Thursday. Bulpett also reported that the Miami Heat are considering a reunion with Olynyk.

Luckily we have ace in the hole in Danny who presumably (a) loves Brad and the Celtics and (b) hates Riley and the Heat lol

I like the potential of Reid better than KO, but I won’t object to a reunion. Just hate that we’d have to lose Gallinari to do that.

The Bulpett report that this rumor is based off also indicated that Olynyk isn't really an option because the C's would need to trade someone from their rotation and that would defeat the purpose of acquiring Olynyk to begin with.

I have previously proposed something like this, and believe it still makes a fair amount of sense.

Olynyk, Vanderbilt, Gay for Gallinari, Grant, Pritchard, Jackson, and a 2nd (it would be 2 trades)

2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

if Gay has anything left in the tank, that wouldn't be a bad deal.  thought he was pretty cooked at this point though

I read the report too.

I think there is a chance they still do it. Salary wise, I think it just takes Gallinari, Pritchard and Jackson. The article presumed Utah wouldn't be that interested in Pritchard, and we wouldn't part with a future first, but it sounded like an educated guess.

It feels a bit like the Derrick White situation. Olynyk is ideal for about 3+ years as playable rotation big. He can play two positions, he's clever and and excellent shooter, and he's a pretty respectable defender. Not the defender Horford is, but you could play him with Rob Williams and he can do exactly what Horford does on offense. His salary also is a future chip. If Stevens can do this, I wouldn't be shocked if he goes for it. Nothing fancy, just a great fit.

He is. That is more about taking on a contract to avoid sending out a 1st.

Of all the players who've passed through the Boston Celtics lineups since I've been around, Kelly Olynyk is probably the most misunderstood and underappreciated.

Somehow a myth of his supposed "softness" got created and then taken up into the echo chamber - even while he was one of the league leaders in drawing charges. There probably are few things that require more mental fortitude than getting the knee of an NBA athlete going full out into your breadbasket, and then putting yourself in the way of that again the next night.

Others here have advocated for Naz Reid and Jakob Poeltl - either of them would add a lot, but Olynyk is the best fit of the three.

'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021
