Game Notes
The Celtics continue their 5 game road trip with the 4th game in Oakland to play the Golden State Warriors.   The Warriors just returned from a 3-2 five game road trip themselves.  The Celtics are trying to snap back after losing two games in a row that they should have won.

The Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10 games while the Warriors are 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are looking to snap a 2 game losing streak while the Warriors are looking for their 3rd straight win.  The Warriors are 26-3 at home while the Celtics are 19-15 on the road.

The Celtics have been struggling with injuries in the road trip.   Avery Bradley and Al Horford both missed the loss to the Suns.  Avery returned against the Clippers but Al Horford remained out with an elbow injury that he suffered against the Lakers.  Jonas Jerebko joined him on the injured list with flu-like symptoms.    Al Horford has said that he hopes to play in this one but is a game time decision as is Jonas Jerebko.

The Warriors have been playing without Kevin Durant, who injured his knee when teammate Zaza Pachulia fell on it.   Damian Jones is away from the team on an assignment with the Warriors' D-League team.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/isaiah_thomas.png)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/stephen_curry.png)
Isaiah Thomas vs Stephen Curry
The simple truth is that no human can guard Stephen Curry.   Avery, Jae, Jaylen,  Isaiah and Marcus have to do the best they can but he will still get his.  Curry is averaging 24.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.  He is shooting 46% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.  The best the Celtics can hope for is to maybe slow him down a little.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/avery_bradley.png)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/klay_thompson.png)
Avery Bradley vs Klay Thompson
Thompson is averaging 21.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.  He is shooting 46% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc.  Thompson, like Curry are very tough to cover and if they get going, you just have to try to limit everyone else.

Honorable Mention
Al Horford vs Draymond Green
Hopefully Al will be able to play in this one.  Green is capable of putting up big numbers if not defended well.  If Al is out once again, Jae will get the job of playing against Green while Jaylen Brown will likely start at small forward once again.  Green is averaging 10.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.4 blocks.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- The Warriors can put up points quickly and in bunches.  They are averaging 117.5 points per game.   It will be important for the Celtics to bring their defensive intensity into this game, especially to shut down the Warriors' fast breaks as they can get up the floor very quickly.  The Celtics must especially guard the perimeter as the Warriors are very dangerous from beyond the arc.   The Celtics must execute on the defensive end of the court and play tough team defense if they have any hope of winning this game.

Rebound - The Celtics need to crash the boards to keep the Warriors from igniting their fast breaks. The Celtics also need to rebound to give themselves second chance points and limit the second chance points for the Warriors. The Celtics are 5-0 when they out rebound their opponents.  They have to crash the boards as a team to have a chance in this game because they won't win a shoot out.

Take Care of the Ball - The Warriors can be very disruptive by getting into the passing lanes, averaging a league best 9.7 steals per game. The Celtics need to stay focused and not give the Warriors any easy opportunities to steal the ball or to get out on the break.  If the Celtics get sloppy with the ball, the Warriors will make them pay.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to come out focused and play hard from start to finish. The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team throughout the game. They must be aggressive on defense, on the boards, in chasing down loose balls, and in taking the ball to the hoop and not settling for jumpers. They allowed both the Suns and the Clippers to finish the game playing harder than them and if they allow the Warriors to play harder than them,  they will get the same results.   They need energy and extra effort from every player on the team.

Teamwork and Chemistry- After the loss to the Clippers, Isaiah made a comment about how it wasn't time for the coach to be experimenting with lineups and he called out everyone on the team for the loss.  Hopefully the team can work through any problems and come out united and ready to play together to get a win.

X-Factors
Focus - The Celtics have to be focused on the game and not on the frustration of their last two losses and not on the controversy of Isaiah's complaints after the loss to the Clippers.  The only way the Celtics will get a win in this game is to outwork the Warriors and stay focused on the task at hand.

Injuries - The first time these two teams met this season, the Celtics were without Al Horford and Jae Crowder.  Al is again a game time decision for this game qs is Jonas Jerebko.  It would make it much easier if both Al and Jonas can play.

Officiating - As always, the officiating is an x-factor.   Every crew officiates differently and teams never know what to expect.  Sometimes they let them play and other times they call a foul on every possession.  Some games they call evenly and others they favor one team or the other.  It's like Forrest Gump's box of chocolate... you never know what you are going to get.

Game thread!  And with coffee cups. I guess that flc needs to sober up after the flasks from the last game thread.  ;D

Celtics show the world they can beat anyone and pull out a close game against the warriors. Smart plays such physical defense on curry that curry begins to cry on the court.  ;D

Thanks for the thread, my sober flc. A very sober tp for you.

Goooooooooo Celtics!!  ;D

Calling it now - if we're healthy and get Al and JJ back, we take this game.

The Warriors have been all out of whack recently with KD out, and though we're currently about as consistently inconsistent as we can get, we somehow get up for these big games like this.

103-101 Celtics with Smart hitting the game-clinching free throws after a magnificent defensive play to get the tie up and foul. Then AB pulls another Cleveland game out of his arse and gives Curry All-NBA 1st Team defense and forces a bad three point miss at the buzzer for a C's win!

This team is like Rondo. Only step their game up against elite opponents. Im expecting a good fight, if not a W. We need Phoenix to beat Washington today if we want to keep the #2 spot from them.

Yes, sir.

With Horford in and KD out, the Celtics should win. I think this is an important game to gauge how well this team can deal with a little struggle.

This will be brutal.  I have no hope at all.

Hopefully IT shut tha hell up and play the game the right way.  Stop chucking 3's when it makes no sense to do so, stop pointing to your wrist, stop being lazy on defense, stop complaining to the refs, stop blaming your teammates for your screw-ups.  Just play the game.

If Horford is indeed playing, I will be very disappointed if the Celtics can't come away with a win. It will be a tough game, but this could be the type of win to get them back on track down the stretch.

Definitely got to appreciate the schedule makers last year (at least for us regular 9-5 guys).

Double overtime thriller was in Boston on a Friday night.
Boston snapping the Warriors 54 game winning streak was in Oakland on a Friday night.

Didn't have to worry about waking up early for work the next morning, really got to enjoy those games.

And one of the last games we play against true playoff contenders for the rest of the 18 games.

We only have to play Cleveland and Washington once more each, and both are at the Garden.

Would be 41-24.

Would like to see Horford play like he did in that Cleveland game.

Going to take an IT spectacular + full team effort (defense as well) to win this.

Washington is rivaling them this year to me. I can't stand Wall and Beal anymore after their "funeral" stuff and all of the "dirty" talk they had earlier in the year.

But I guess I'd be salty too if my team got swept last year by Boston, which probably ultimately led to Horford signing in Boston over Washington lol

I still remember that fiasco last season with Horford choosing Washington, then electing to stay, then supposedly having no clue, then electing to stay, then Aldridge breaks it (not Woj!) that Horford is coming here.

I was shopping at Walmart that hour. Man was I nearly running into people with my cart while checking my phone constantly LOL.

Forums were a mad house at the time too. People raging at Horford and calling him names when it's "all but done" Horford was staying.. Good times...

Jaylen Rose actually speaking some truth right now.

He basically said you can criticize the C's all you want, but they're playing with house money at this point with their picks going forward and young core.

We need to get Smart and Brown in the game and shake things up and bit offensively, get to the hole a bit more. Everything is almost exclusively jumpshot-oriented at the moment.

And GS's shooting really exposes IT getting beat off the dribble. There's so much spacing that defenders have to collapse and help early, leading to easy kick outs and further secondary drives.

He didn't say "rebounding" he said "good rebounding." Sully is back out there and he can rebound but the Celtics don't want just someone who can rebound. They want a complete basketball player who can rebound. In other words, "good rebounding."

I don't know if that's what he meant, exactly, but I thought it was interesting.

I don't think so. They want a big who can play in our system, not necessarily shoot threes. Someone who set good screens and pass is important, kinda like Bogut. Amir despite shooting well recently, is not a shooter but he can work in our system. It just means Bigs whose sole skill is rebounding/rim-running is a no-no.

As good as we are playing, this is a bit frustrating.

Why don't we get up like this defensively for more games anymore? We played defense like this 75% of the games last year, which is the only reason we were as good as we were then. Now we just let our offense try to win us games.

As good as we are playing, this is a bit frustrating.

Why don't we get up like this defensively for more games anymore? We played defense like this 75% of the games last year, which is the only reason we were as good as we were then. Now we just let our offense try to win us games.

you know the answer  ::)

And literally that last possession IT just left McKaw in the corner wide open for a three for no reason whatsoever. This is becoming maddening how bad he is defensively.

IT has gotten mugged two possessions in a row.  Refs have swallowed their whistles -- those were fouls earned, not out of control plays.

Smart looked good when Bradley was injured. Now Smart still plays hard and does good things, but he just seems to be missing a lot of the game as well.

He makes that cut to the basket, that Horford hit him on tonight for the and one, but no one ever hits him on it. He gets open a surprising amount and has his hands up for a pass but no one hits him. I guess it's rookie syndrome. I think the kid will be a weapon on both sides of the ball in years to come.

That crossed my mind. The vets just don't trust him yet, which I guess is understandable.

He had a slow first half against Phoenix too and then got more involved in the second. I'm hoping the same happens tonight. For Jaylen, that is, with a different final score, of course.

Smart, Crowder, and Bradley are a combined 3-17 in the first half. Even IT is 3-8. We committed 9 TOs, and had 8 shots blocked.

Yet we're only down 4. A good second half and this is our game. We SHOULD beat this team without Durant, and we're going to.

I also love his demeanor. He seems very quiet in the face of Barnes's usual crap. And Curry talking shows that Brown is getting some smart comments in when the refs can't hear him. Very Tim Duncan like.

Tonight, the C's have played the kind of defense I expected them to play all season. They're getting in the passing lines, keeping pressure on the ballhandler, and fighting for everything. A win tonight could go a long way in reminding them this is how they should be playing every night.

T freaking P. The same here. If we played this type of defense (which we legitimately can) 80% of the time, we're easily a 60+ win team.

Now injuries have played a role, but I do think they've just been saving themselves a lot for this home stretch and the playoffs. If we see this type of defense consistently in the playoffs, things will get really interesting.

Defense has always been this team's identity, and we show game after game that defense is how we win (or lose) games.

Hopefully this is the wake-up call and this is the D we see the rest of the way!

Great win and first time in 55 home games they were held under 100! This is the team I want to see come playoff time. Whatever KO ate for dinner, needs to be replicated a la Wade Boggs from long ago.

Great dreams for Celtics fans..night!

Updated last two seasons teams records at Oracle:
Warriors: 91.5%
Celtics: 100%
Everyone else: 5.8%

not bad.

Well we might have lost to Phoenix, but we beat Cleveland and GS

Two biggest win of the season

We're probably the only team in the league that has beaten both GS and Cleveland this season.

Decent win. Not great though.. GSW can't hit anything

Really? Not our defense? Wow....

Avery is the best on-ball defender in the league, sure, and it is pretty impressive to hold them to only 13 FGs attempted in a final quarter, I'm just saying that will not happen like that again - we should expect them to make more shots typically.

Kelly continues to drive ME CRAZY!!!!!!!

Welcome back Kelly Olynyk! Can you please stay around this time?

omg Kelly O was big in this game.  He is so frustratingly inconsistent, but when he plays well he makes you think he is tough to trade.

don't get your hopes up

GSW really don't have good big players on their team...only Green

Al Horford and KO can feast on their bigs

similar to the cavs

against the Raptors, OKC, Rockets, --- it won't be easy

Man, that was just a beautiful overall game to watch. That defense is just something else when we actually play like that consistently.

That's our formula of success. We literally just beat the best team in the league in the most difficult arena by shooting 44% and 34.5% from 3, all because we held them to 44% shooting and 20% from 3, which is our bread and butter. We also kept them to a season low in overall points and forced 17 TOs.

That's how we need to play, and if we play that way, we're a tough out for ANY team in the playoffs.

You cant play that way night in and night out. Takes a lot of energy. With the rest between games you probably could turn it op like that in the playoffs.

Setting all kinds of season records tonight - not only did we hold the Warriors to their season low in points, we held them to their lowest quarter in points all season in the 4th with a mere 12 (!) points scored.

Was that Olynyk's best game as a Celtic?  17/5/5 on 7-9 with 3 steals, and a +29 in 26 minutes.  The next best +/- was Jaylen's +13.  And against the best team in basketball.

He really stepped up as much as anybody tonight.

last years double(?) OT loss was the best game of his career.

If he wasnt so inconsistent and unreliable hed be a terrific player.

Great game! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Avery bradley and Marcus Smart should make all defensive teams this year, no question.

As an aside, both teams tonight played without Durant. KD could've joined either team as currently constructed. I wonder if he regrets it a teeny-tiny bit lol

Maybe it's me then.  Both that game and tonight's game I've been in Boston, which happens about 5 nights a year for me.  So when we play Golden State and I'm in Boston, Olynyk goes off.

After this weekend, the next time I'm in town happens to fall on Game 7 of the NBA finals.  That could be epic!

Good news: C's are 19-5 when they have their core players healthy and play some really nice defense

Bad news: They are almost never healthy.

It would be interesting to see this team healthy down the stretch and into the playoffs. Fingers crossed.
