Given this is the most important selection every season, I am rather surprised this style of all time discussion is very rarely broached. Being three teams of five, it’s the perfect sample size and demonstrates the ranking of talent.

Below is how the NBA structures the end of season teams, thus I have replicated it. Please use the template below to make comparisons much easier.

I am excited and curious to see everyone’s selections!

The blog has a Historical Draft about once every 12-18 months dedicated to just such discussion and it lasts for a couple weeks. If you like discussing All-Time greats, you should participate in the next one.

Are we talking who we think the greatest players in league history are, or who we'd put on our personal teams?  Those aren't necessarily the same things.

Because, if it's my team, there will be some quirks.

I like Roy's distinction. All-Time greatest:

FIRST:                SECOND:
C: Kareem           C: Russell
F: Bird                 F: Duncan
F: LeBron            F: Durant
G: Jordan            G: Robertson
G: Curry              G: Magic

THIRD:
C: Hakeem
F: K. Malone
F: Garnett
G: Kobe
G: West

My guys:
Russell / Robinson / Jokic
Garnett / Giannis / Barkley
Bird / Pierce / Tatum
Doncic / McGrady / Ginobili
Nash / Tiny Archibald / Rondo
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I realise this is more about hypothetical All-NBA rankings, but these are three of the most fun All Time lineups I've ever seen in a long time (the first team in particular would be absolutely fantastic to watch).
Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time.

But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.

Garnett had a greater career than Duncan?  Please pass along whatever it is you are smoking, it must be good.

Since I'm bored. I'd figured I'd mix it up & pick them by team & year verbatim (and not using a guy twice).

First Team 1987-88

F: Charles Barkley
F: Larry Bird
C: Hakeem Olajuwon
G: Michael Jordan
G: Magic Johnson

—————————

Second Team 1967-1968

F: Willis Reed
F: John Havlicek
C: Bill Russell
G: Hal Greer
G: Jerry West

—————————

Third Team 2000-2001

F: Karl Malone
F: Dirk Nowitski
C: David Robinson
G: Ray Allen
G: Gary Payton

That is an interesting way to do it.  How about 61/62

F - Pettit
F - Baylor
C - Chamberlain
G - Robertson
G - West

So that is Wilt's 50/25 season, a 30 ppg triple double from Oscar, Baylor's 38/19 season, and 30+ ppg seasons from West and Pettit.  Baylor only played 48 games so maybe you can't include him, but my list so I am.  That team is basically an unstoppable offensive machine.

Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip
