Matisse Thybulle is a pleasure to watch on defence. You have him on the Celtics and Marcus Smart is totally expendable.

2 hours ago – via Joe Vardon @ The Athletic
To be clear, Popovich is horrified by his own record coaching this team. He dwells on it and hates the losing. The players are frustrated, too, grumbling on their way back to the locker room about “running the San Antonio offense” when apparently they feel like there are better ideas. Pop has said, because of the truncated nature of Team USA’s training camp, the offense would be based on “concepts” instead of set plays

Great to see Joe true to form stirring the pot as always. I thought a lot of the players that accepted (e.g. Durant, Dame) did so because they wanted to play for Pop?
The Pop question has crossed my mind. His spot in the NBA coach's pantheon is unimpeachable but maybe his approach to the international game isn't working.

We can talk about international players getting better, and national teams having more cohesion but the reality is that when Yabu was playing in the NBA everyone in the Olympic team right now would've looked at him like lunch if he was in front of them. What changed? It's still basketball. Our team should be eating these defenders alive.

You forget that in the NBA Yalu would not be allowed to breath on anyone on the USA team without being called for fouls. They need to suck it up and stop whining.
I get that the rules are different but it's not like it's suddenly rugby out there.

Haven't been following much. I didn't realize the Olympic tournament was so small.

I'm not sure how it works, maybe it's by region like the FIFA World Cup? In which case they would be the best qualifier from the Middle East?

Czech Republic will be tougher I think but I would expect them to beat the Czechs, Satoransky notwithstanding. Knockout round will be the sphincter tightening phase.

Yes, it's by region. Here's a quote from wikipedia.

The best finishing team/s in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup from each FIBA zone qualifies directly to the Olympics.

    FIBA Africa: 1 team
    FIBA Americas: 2 teams
FIBA Asia: 1 team (Iran was the best Asian team)
    FIBA Europe: 2 teams
    FIBA Oceania: 1 team

Japan qualified to participate in the Olympic men's basketball event as the host nation.

The additional four qualifying teams were determined through four FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments of six teams each, i.e., 24 teams in total. The tournaments were contested by the 16 best non-qualifying teams at the 2019 World Cup and an additional eight teams—two teams from each of the four regions of Africa, Americas, Asia (and Oceania), and Europe. According to the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup results, each zone is allocated with the following berths:

    FIBA Africa: 3 teams
    FIBA Americas: 7 teams
FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania: 3 teams
    FIBA Europe : 11 teams

Iran has a player that played in the NBA and another one that I think played too. Granted, they were end of bench players but one was a huge 7 footers with real potential. Iran shouldn't be close to beating big teams but they're definitely not a bad team.

3x3 is awesome.  So fast paced.  I quite enjoyed watching the Women's final yesterday.

Shame the NBA players couldn't qualify for it (there are only a few qualifying tournaments that they can play that don't overlap with the NBA season, so none of them qualified - for any country)
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

They should play with real 3 on 3 rules - make it take it, check ball on every change of possession, fouls?  What fouls?  No harm (blood) no foul

Thybulle makes Smart look like Steve Nash on offense.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.
