I personally love the Olympics ... the opening ceremonies were absolutely amazing! Steve Nash and Wayne Gretzky carried the torch in it's last legs and helped light the cauldron, which rose in separate columns of "ice" from the floor of the main arena ... pretty cool to watch. Such a shame that these games had to begin under the veil of such tragedy ... I pray they end in a better fashion. GO USA!!

I am american, and have no bias towards anyone in the Olympics, but, so far not so good for Vancouver. The death of this young athlete is a TRAGEDY and they are saying it's not their fault. I understand they have to say that, but people are wiping out left and right over there, it's ridiculous. No padding on the metal poles at the end of the fastest luge track? Why not? If it's not their fault, why pad the poles and raise the ice now? You just said it's not your fault but you're going to make changes?

I thought it was pretty riduculous that they didn't have padding on those metal poles.

I watched the horrific video of the accident and it seems like if the track is running that fast and the walls arent that high, that its just a no-brainer to have padding on those supports.

I just don't get why they would say "It's not the tracks fault" and then go out and raise the wall and pad the beams (which should have been done anyway). It is absolutely tragic, words can't express how awful it is.

How did you find the video?

I'm amazed with the speed-skating short-track relays ... it's complete chaos on ice ... I really have a great amount of admiration for their ability to NOT get completely confused. My favorite event is aerials, then freestyle moguls, as I used to compete in freestyle competition, back following the days of Wayne Wong. One of my old skiing buddies from my town studied with Wayne and is now an "Extreme Skiing" movie producer/director, Greg Stump ... we were crazy back then, pushing the envelope, but what they're doing now on skis is just amazing.

Bode Miller gets Bronze in Men's Downhill, with first place and third separated by 0.09/second ... amazing. He began his career at Carrabassett Valley Academy at Sugarloaf ... my old winter haunt. ;)

I don't think they could put enough padding to matter for the speed he was going at.

The impact destroyed his neck/head.

I'm Canadian and I think the track is too fast and the poles should have padding. Also didn't like the response from our head Olympic honcho Dick Pound.

Love speed skating too. Looking forward to the hockey.

Another "Maine-ah" and Carrabassett Valley Academy alum, Seth Wescott, wins an Olympic Gold Metal in Snow-Board-Cross ... sweet! Sugarloaf has produced so many of the world's dominant athletes in snow sports, and deservedly so. Go USA!

I love that the USA is an underdog to Canada and Germany in hockey, but Ryan Miller is going to have to step-it-up big time, especially after losing some of our D right before tournament. Man, I would LOVE to see this team dominate ... and shock the home-team crowd. First up: Switzerland ... we'll see. ;)

Yeah ... US has a young team but they did OK in their opener against a very experienced German team.

Only one shot on goal in the power play ... the Swiss are so good at expending time tying up the puck ... great demonstration of their strength there.

Yeah ... US is clicking and Miller is money ... I'm loving our chances to get on the podium. Can't wait to see Germany and Canada ... as long as we stay healthy, I'll think we'll surprise some teams who are way too cocky. We're major under-dogs but loaded with quiet talent.

Wow ... Shuster chokes again ... on the same shot! And he has dominated the rest of the game, coming from down by 4 to zip to take a 6 - 4 lead, now it's tied going into extra ends. (He might want to think about spelling his name differently, haha). ;)

Shaun White is ridiculously talented.

Wow...that halfpipe final was amazing.  He already had the gold tied up and still went all out on that final run.  That last move was mind-boggling.

He's so far ahead of everyone else, its insane.

Absolutely ... the guy is at least 8 to 10 feet higher above the edge of the pipe than anyone else ... and his "Victory Lap" was a higher score, (obviously), than his winning, first run ... unbelievable!

Lindsey Vonn is leading in the Super Combined after the Downhill portion, which is also amazing, considering she already won Gold in the Downhill on her badly injured shin. Girl is tough.

Man, when I raced slalom, the poles moved you, not the other way around ... they can ski such a clean line now, no wonder the elapsed times have improved so much over the years ... there's not a lot of turning in slalom anymore.

Really fired up for US-Canada in hockey tonight.  Didn't realize that the US hasn't beaten Canada in the Olympics in 50 years.  Its about time that changed, isn't it?   ;)

Ski-cross today too.  I have a definite interest in what this is gonna look like.  I loved snowboard-cross.

Canada in general is choking pretty bad throughout their home Olympics.

The U.S. on the other hand  ;D

Still, the hockey team has a ways to go,

Have to put a word in ... while it's certainly understandable that the US Men's Hockey Team is getting so much hype, the US Women's Team is advancing to the Gold Medal match against Canada. This women's team is awesome, and these are definitely the best two teams in the world. I hope more people will get into this sport as a result, and I hope there will be no shortage of accolades for them ... they deserve as much as we can give them. GO USA!!

That was very impressive win against Canada. Also because of that win, Canada will have to face Russia in the quarterfinals which also should be a great game. There surely will be a lot of Ovechkin vs Crosby hype.

As a Russia fan, I hope for them to play the US team in the finals.

I've always been on the Ovechkin side of the Ovechkin/Crosby debate.  To me, he's a more complete player and a lot more apt to mix it up.  I know he may be a little rough around the edges but he's pretty likeable to me.

Not sure who I'd pull for in Russia/Canada.  Part of me wants the US-Canada rematch but US-Russia would be a fun one to watch too.  Obviously a lot still needs to happen for all those teams before any of it becomes a reality.  That's the beauty of single elimination but also the risk.

Don't agree with that at all.  To me Crosby is the better team player, passer, and defender, but Ovechkin has him in scoring even though he is catching up to Ovechkin in that as you can see with the leading NHL scores this year.

For who I would like to face, I would love to face the Canadiens in a rematch but I feel it would be an extremely tough game and that Russia would be easier, but I don't care who we beat, I just want the Gold.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not trying to denigrate Crosby by any means.  I just like Ovechkin more.  He's a pleasure to watch.

No, it is your opinion and it is extremely close between both.

And watching Ovechkin is great.  At half-time of C's Nuggets on Sunday I put on the Russia game and how about that Ovechkin hit....

Wow!

I'd like to see Canada win that game in the states with a crowd of 18,000 cheering on the U.S.

I'm sure the U.S. would have an easier time beating Canada then it was for Canada to beat us to today in Vancouver.

Great game.  Really hard nosed effort by the US to get back in it, and eventually tie it up.  The puck just got under the defender's stick before Crosby picked it up for the game winner.

Nice to see that level of competitive hockey.
