Why the surgery wasn't done after last season is a question you have to ask.
That's two questionable Stevens' moves. The first was letting Gallo play in Italy with bad knees.
Friend of mine in the sports business said the 2nd surgery was always going to be necessary since they didn't do the full surgery when he hurt it originally.

He also said the surgery could have happened right away after the season or a year or more later. It all depended on how much it affected Williams and if he was willing to work through some pain.

Guess we have our answer on that last part now. I'm not expecting to see Timelord until January at the very earliest.

A January to April season for Rob sounds good to me.  That's around 50 games?   About right for a Rob season.  Playoff healthy.

So, did the Celtics take their time having Williams' surgery done on purpose, deciding the 50-game, second half of the season scenario you describe was the best long-term plan for player health and team success ?

I kind of doubt that was the plan.  But on the other hand, how could it not cross their minds?

If the Cs play well in his absence and they bring him along gradually, it seems to provide a much better chance for him to be healthy for the playoffs.

What a terrible month for the Celitcs.

My guess is Grant takes hi place in the starting lineup where him and Al are the "bigs".

My guess is will move Tatum to PF, keep Grant on the bench, play Al at C.   Brown at SF, Smart at PG and Brogdon at SG.

In no way should grant be starting over Brogdon, it makes zero sense.    He does not rebound like a starting PF.   Grant could be the sixth man big.

PG - Marcus Smart
SG - Jaylen Brown
SF - Jayson Tatum
PF - Grant Williams
C - Al Horford

Brogdon, Pritchard, and White to backup the guard positions. Luke Kornet backing up the C position. Tatum may need to shift to PF at times throughout the game. Sam Hauser to backup the wing.

Ofc, would be best to pickup a veteran backup F/C and we'd be ok. We still need Gallo's replacement but it is what it is.

Counting on Kornet and Hauser is a massive mistake.

Starting 5 should be
Smart
Brogan
Brown
Tatum
Al

Pritchard and white back up guards
Grant backs up Al and Tatum

The issue is counting on Hauser and Kornet, who stink.

Wouldn't Noah Vonleh be in front of Kornet in the rotation if he makes the team?  I guess NV is such a ? at this point, we have no idea how good he is right now?

In about two weeks, we went from being declared the deepest team in the league to being desperate for quality bench players.
The Four Celtic Generals:
Russell - Cowens - Bird - Garnett

The Four Celtic Lieutenants:
Cousy - Havlicek - McHale - Pierce

Wow, what the heck did they find in there when they opened up that knee? They didn't even state that it was a successful surgery like they usually do.

Good question. Are all NBA teams this evasive with information about their players - and now, coaches ?

who declared Boston the deepest team in the league?  certainly no one that knows anything about basketball.  Not with a team of only 10 quality players and 5 worthless spots on the bench.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Yes, that has always been the Clippers this season.  I think the Clippers are too deep for their own good, but they’re deep.

I went to go look at their depth chart on ESPN, and they seemingly forgot to put the SG position on it... lol. https://www.espn.com/nba/team/depth/_/name/lac/la-clippers

But yes, I think they're very deep - which is a wise investment with Kawhi and PG
