"There were strong indications the Red Sox were planning a roster move involving Brad Penny.

After the game, the Sox brass, which included owner John Henry, general manager Theo Epstein, director of baseball operations Brian O'Halloran and Terry Francona met with Penny before Francona's post-game press conference. Penny then chatted briefly with Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick and left without speaking.

Penny went 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA for the Sox and had been demoted from the starting rotation to the bullpen. The Sox wanted to see how Tim Wakefield performed and by all accounts they were pleased with his pitching (7 innings, 1 run, 3 hits) and by the way he moved around the field. His calf and back seemed to hold up fine.

The Sox need a roster spot to make room for Billy Wagner who joins the team Thursday."
