Team speed is very important. It is easy to work with one slow guy when the other 4 guys are good athletes. 5 slow guys together would destroy your defense. You would get killed in transition and you would give up a ton of open shots in the halfcourt because you can neither stay in front of people well enough or make multiple efforts on defensive rotations.
Not sure about that Who. The 86 celtics were one of the best transition teams in Nba History with Parish, Mchale, Bird, Ainge, and DJ.
Only Ainge was even above average speed. High IQ and timing and chemistry beats speed.
Your proposed team wouldn't be a good transition team. You've got lots of great outlet passers but who's going to get out on the break to catch those passes. In any case, it is about defense.
Not only is the team slow but there isn't any rim protection either. The team would be bad in all phases of defense. Opposing teams could score at will whether it is on the fast break or taking the ball in the paint or flinging it from 3. In the playoffs teams can't afford any weak links on defense. In this case, teams wouldn't have to hunt the weak link. They'd have several options to choose from. So I can't see your team winning any championships unless they are just playing clearly overmatched teams.
Wrong and more wrong. No rim protection? Jokic is 7 feet 280 pounds he can't jump but he gets in the way. Dirk is seven feet and pretty athletic when he was younger, and Bird was 6'9" and a great team defender by advanced metrics as well as a fantastic rebounding team, part of defense.
Also who was catching those fast break baskets on the 86 celtics? Everyone was slow lol
They weren't slow. Kevin McHale was very athletic in 1986. Parish was a plus athlete with excellent end to end speed. Ainge was a very good athlete. Bird was still in his prime and a decent athlete. DJ was good laterally but not end to end. He was still a good athete for a SG but they were playng big with him at PG.
Im with you for the most part, but wouldn't you agree that they were one of the best teams ever in transition with five guys that were not exactly burners.
Take a team like the Nets with Kidd, Kittles, Richard Jefferson, Vince Carter, Kenyon Martin. Much more athletic and end to end speed all day.
Yet the Celtics were still better in the fast break. The team played at a genius level, when a player saw The rebound going to Larry, instantly leak out for the easy two. Best team ever. Not very fast.
