Yes, it's a provocative headline, but it's also a fitting question when we see stories like this:

Quote
Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant was accused of repeatedly punching a teenage boy in the head and threatening him with a gun last summer, according to Memphis police records acquired by the Washington Post.

The alleged incident reportedly came four days after another incident in which Morant allegedly threatened the head of security at a Memphis mall. Both allegations are emerging about a month after several of Morant's acquaintances allegedly threatened and harassed Indiana Pacers staffers with a red laser [which the Pacers think was a gun].

There is a little bit of Thug in every one. Jk

Clearly different people come from different backgrounds. Some people don't learn to leave "the life" behind them. Morant is blessed right now. He needs to distance himself from those who can't mature to the life (one of wealth and fame with public responsibility) he has now. If he is the problem then I hope he gets what is coming. We don't need to empower/enable violent behavior.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

You know what, I googled this very phrase a couple of weeks ago, because I was curious based on what I had read about an incident where some of Ja's entourage was banned from Fedex Forum following some jawing with some Indiana players. Following that game there was a further altercation Ja's entourage had with the Indiana players in the loading area of Fedex Forum which included a laser being shined on the Indiana team which some people thought was from a gun:

Quote
“Following a game between the Indiana Pacers and Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 29 in Memphis, acquaintances of Grizzlies star Ja Morant aggressively confronted members of the Pacers traveling party near the team’s bus in the loading area of FedExForum, and later someone in a slow-moving SUV — which Morant was riding in — trained a red laser on them.”

Morant reportedly “aggressively confronted” individuals on the Pacers, which is bad enough — this incident should have been over during the game.

The details only continue to get more concerning as the report continues:

“The two members of the traveling party who spoke to The Athletic said that they did not see who shined the laser from the SUV. They also don’t know if the laser was attached to a gun, but they believed it was. A Pacers security guard in the loading area at the time remarked: ‘That’s 100 percent a gun.’

‘We felt we were in grave danger,’ one person who was present said.”

According to the report, these unnamed individuals felt they were in “grave danger” when they saw a red laser pointed at them from what they suspected to be a gun.

While the Pacers did not alert the police, they did file a report with the NBA. The Grizzlies reportedly “complied completely” with the investigation and are “abiding by” its findings.

Here is what league spokesman Mike Bass told The Athletic:

“NBA Security and league investigators conducted an investigation interviewing numerous eyewitnesses and reviewing video surveillance following allegations made by the Indiana Pacers organization regarding a postgame incident on Jan. 29. While we substantiated that a postgame situation arose that was confrontational, based on interviews and other evidence gathered, we could not corroborate that any individual threatened others with a weapon.

Whether there was a gun or not it's not a good look. Then there was this from Shannon Sharpe, who had his own altercation with Ja and the Grizzlies in LA:

Quote
“I wish Ja would realize he’s not a thug,” Sharpe said on his “Undisputed” show. “Ja is a really good basketball player. Ja did everything he could to lift himself and his family out of this environment and to get away from this. And for some reason, he wants to surround himself with these types of people. Why? Bruh, you not hard. That’s not your life. People that [are] in that life would give anything to be in your life.”

For some reason, you got a $200 million contract, and you want people in the NBA to think you hood,” Sharpe said. “To think you gangster because you roll with these types of people. Bruh, you putting yourself in harm’s way when you don’t have to!

“Nobody looks at you, Ja, and thinks, ‘man, that’s a thug; he hood. He down, he ’bout that.’ You not! Stop pretending! All you do is yap and talk about, ‘oh, I’m going to let him live and see another day; I’m going to do this.’ You not gonna do nothing! What you gon’ do is get yourself in trouble. Put yourself and your family in harm’s way when you don’t have to!”

I don't agree with Shannon Sharpe or Skip Bayless on many things but I agree with him on this take - I don't think Ja is a thug but he's trying to make it out like he is. He's got a good dad that kept him on the straight and narrow and has a great life ahead of him but he seems to be hanging with the wrong crowd of suckups and sycophants.

He seems infatuated with presenting as some tough gangster type, yet the only incidents of Ja himself actually doing anything involve assaulting children.

He does seem to surround himself with similarly pathetic people.

There was also an incident earlier this year where some of Morant’s entourage shined a laser into the pacers. Simmons and some NBA people on his podcast talked about this incident.

Edit Ozgod had way more details above.

I don't know about a thug, but he definitely comes off as an airhead. I've seen more than a couple interviews where he can hardly string a sentence together and just repeatedly says "bruh"

I don't mind if guys aren't well-spoken, or if they're objectively not intelligent.

But, three allegations of violent behavior -- two involving firearms -- suggests a young man who either directly or via his friends solves problems through violence and intimidation.

Yeah… Despite having a supportive family and a good father, Ja Morant is becoming a well-established knucklehead

Not to mention other threats of violence, like tweeting at random strangers about how "it's free to see how hollows [hollow points] feel"

Ja has managed to attract the WaPo's attention with a front page exclusive.

Quote
Ja Morant is among the brightest young stars in the NBA, with a new signature Nike shoe, a top-selling jersey and a team, the Memphis Grizzlies, poised for a deep postseason run. But in a string of incidents dating from last summer, Morant and people close to him have been accused of threatening and even violent behavior, according to previously unreported police records obtained by The Washington Post.

Last summer, in an encounter that has not been previously reported, the head of security at a Memphis mall told police that Morant “threatened” him during an altercation in the parking lot, leaving him alarmed enough that he filed a police report. A member of Morant’s group shoved the director in the head, he told police. No arrests were made, records show.

Four days later, Morant repeatedly punched a teenage boy in the head during a pickup basketball game at Morant’s house, the boy told police. Morant and his friend struck the 17-year-old so hard they knocked him to the ground and left him with a “large knot” on the side of his head, according to a police report narrative written by deputies who said they observed the boy’s injuries.

The teenager told detectives from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office that, after the fight, Morant went into his house and re-emerged with a gun visible in the waistband of his pants and his hand on the weapon, according to police interviews obtained by The Post, which have not previously been reported.

The police report does not name Morant’s “best friend,” who the boy said had punched him on the other side of the jaw. But a person familiar with the lawsuit, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it was under seal, said the friend was Pack, a childhood friend of Morant’s who is also named in the family’s lawsuit. Pack could not be reached for comment.

Pack had been a staple at Grizzlies games, frequently sitting courtside alongside Morant’s father. After Morant found himself in the middle of an argument during a game against the Pacers in January, Pack stood and walked onto the court himself.

Pack shouted expletives at Pacers players, the Athletic reported, until an official intervened and Pack was escorted off the floor. Later that night, the Athletic reported, the altercation continued outside the arena, where members of Morant’s entourage confronted members of the Pacers near the team’s bus. After Morant got into an SUV, a red laser was trained at members of the team from inside the car, the Athletic reported, prompting a member of the Pacers’ security team to say, “That’s 100 percent a gun.”

The NBA investigated, including by reviewing security footage, and said it “could not corroborate that any individual threatened others with a weapon.”

Full story at https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/03/01/ja-morant-punch-teen-laser/

This is Davonte Pack, Ja's best friend who seems to be involved in most of the issues Ja has been involved in. He was banned from Fedex Forum for walking on the court and arguing with Pacers players.
