2023 Draft

For me its early to be thinking much about the draft but I figured I'd start this thread to post random thoughts on prospects I have seen while watching college games or looking over stats.


The guys who prompted me to start this is very unlikely.

Jamarion Sharp, he is a 7'5 center with a 7'7 wingspan from western Kentucky. Aside from his shot blocking (4.6 per game playing 25mpg) his stats are not amazing

however watching him play he is incredibly mobile for his size and gets up and down the court like a player a foot shorter then he is. He is not likely to be drafted unless his stats dramatically improve but I really think he has a shot to be an NBA player.

Drew Timme might still get a chance, even if his ceiling is probably Luke Harangody.

Juwan Howard’s kid has been looking alright.

I thought Dillion Mitchell might be available mid to late 20s, but Texas has been playing him as a small ball center. While his athleticism is great, his defense and rebounding come and go. Hopefully that’s just being played out of position, but he has no 3pt shot, or at least he’s not taking the opportunity to show it. His offense is pretty one dimensional atm.

Only a few games in but it looks like Begarin might have plateaued? His offensive stats are nearly identical to last year, which weren’t great, although his scoring is up slightly.

I was hoping his outside shot would improve but it looks like he’s not developing it, small sample notwithstanding.

Right now we’d pick 35th, 51st and 58th (as two second rounders were forfeited).

No idea at 35.  Emoni Bates at 51, Drew Timme at 58.  Give the Mainers something to root for.

Sharp's mobility is much better then Taco's. Physically he reminds me a lot of Gobert before he joined the Jazz.

Hopefully we trade a couple of those for a player this year or for future 2nds. Our stock gets a little thin moving forward

I have not watched much of Bates this season but he really worries me as a pro prospect. On one hand I'm a big believer in drafting blue chip HS prospects in the hopes that they may have slipped in the draft due to imperfect college system/role/roster. My perfect prospect trifecta is the 5 star recruit, with + physical attributes, who has been involved in USA basketball.

Where Bates scares me is with his physical attributes.

He isn't an elite or possibly even average athlete for an NBA wing, this coupled with a slight frame and short wingspan scares me. If he isn't the first or second option on a team I don't know that he has skill set to fall into a role.

With that said as a second round pick he is worth the gamble but he is a boom or bust type pick

If it’s around the 51st pick, it’s a complete crapshoot

I was looking at Colby Bates out of Xavier as a player in the 30s. Good positional size for a SG/SF and looks like he actually knows how to play BB. I think he'd probably top out as quality starter or high quality role player.

Tankathon has him at 28.

Having said that, I think Azuolas Tubelis would be a good fit.
