Why? Because Trae Young and Karl Anthony-Towns deserve each other.

Wolves get: Collins, Bogdon, Capella (likely routed to a third team for a rotation guard)
Hawks get: KAT, Russell

Wolves have Edwards-Bogdon-McDaniels-Collins-Gobert with Anderson, Prince, Reid off the bench

Haws have: Young-Murray-Griffin-Hunter-Kat with Holliday, Okungwu, and Russell off the bench.

I think both teams would be better in the short and long term with this trade.

I'm not even sure the Wolves do that trade if it was just Russell in the trade.

no idea what the point of this lopsided deal for Atlanta is.

if Minny was insistent on moving KAT, they should be able to get more than they gave up to get Gobert.

Guess I'm lower on the Wolves, and KAT than most people.

I don't agree with the sentiment that the Wolves would get more than they gave for Gobert. That's a ridiculous price they paid, but that doesn't really set the market price. Just because some idiot paid $300 for a basketball card worth $30 on Ebay doesn't mean that's the new value of the card. It just means some idiot overpaid.

But another season of Edwards with KAT and Gobert, and the Wolves will not only have emptied their cupboards for a player that doesn't fit with their core, but they will also be souring one of the best young talents and personalities in the NBA, essentially begging him to "quiet quit" until he can request a trade.

I think this trade makes the Wolves better than they currently are, and than any iteration of their current team could be.

I will admit, however, that the Hawks likely need to be giving up more to make it work. Maybe they include Okungwu or Hunter with a 1st round pick.

All of that being said ... this trade idea was sparked at the thought of Trae Young and KAT deserving one another. I almost think the arrogance, unteachableness, passive-aggressiveness, etc. might work together. And there's no doubt that their offensive games would be a spectacular fit. I liked the idea of pairing them with Murray, Griffin, and another defender.

I was thinking KAT for Trae Young.

KAT joins up with Dejounte Murray and John Collins. Trae with Edwards and Rudy Gobert.

Wolves would need a heck of a lot more. There's no way 2 of Okongwu/Griffin/Johnson aren't included, at least.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)

C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Towns is basically having his worst season since he was a rookie and he is averaging 21/8/5 with a TS% of 62.5% and he is mostly playing out of position because he is a more natural center than power forward.  The idea that he isn't any good just isn't borne in reality.  He does not have a #1 player mentality or instinct, so you can't rely on him for that, but as a #2 type player goes you can do far worse than Towns.  If he was in Dallas next to Doncic, he'd be a monster.  The problem in Minnesota is not really Towns, it is Russell.  He is a terrible fit for the rest of that roster as it currently exists.
