1883 is really good. Sam Elliot is such a great actor.
I agree but I think I like 1923 better.
I don't know. Just finished 1923 and it seems like the story didn't move at all.
Felt like they were milking it to get multiple seasons out of it.
For sure. The African storyline dragged a bit, and was silly at times. And, some of the scenes were gratuitously misogynistic. But overall, it kept me entertained, and Ford and Mirren were great.
In 1883, I just didn’t care for Elsa. In general, I don’t care for how Sheridan writes love stories (1883, 1923, Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown).
So far I've only watched the 1st 4 episodes on 1923 but the African storyline was nonsense. Not sure what scenes, you are referring to, but things were very misogynistic back in 1923. Women in the US had just gotten the vote a few years earlier. At that time, women's place was most certainly in the home.
In 1883, Elsa (and her narrative) were the best part. Remove her and there is not much left of the story. What love stories are there on Yellowstone?
You need to go further in 1923 to know the scenes I'm talking about. Misogyny in general is a historical fact. Some of the scenes in the finale and the episode or two before are just gratuitous.
On Yellowstone, I'm referring to the relationship between John and Summer. But, really, almost every relationship in that show has the complexity of something in middle school, outside of Beth and Rip.
As for 1883, you're right that outside of Elsa there isn't much story at all. And Elsa's story is basically: fell instantly in love with cowboy, cowboy dies, couple weeks later fell instantly in love with Native American, Elsa dies, all while speaking in the most melodramatic way possible. I found the scenes with the other characters to be more interesting, but they were also very bleak. 1883 isn't on my rewatch list.
