Lots of pro and amateur athletes bowed out of team competition over the last 2 years because of Covid concerns and that seemingly was okay. Didn't hear a lot of complaining about it. Those players have suffered not at all because of it.

A young woman suffering from the effects of mental illness, pulls out of a team competition and is vilified. If she had a diabetic issue, or ligament issue, or heart issue, or some other physical issue, that would be seen as okay. But because mental illness is invisible(can't be seen in an x-ray, CAT scan, MRI, etc.) and the affects almost entirely unseen as well, that isn't acceptable.

Completely disagree with anyone that is castigating her for doing what was in her best mental health, self interests.

How would any of you feel if she "played through" this, couldn't take the immense pressure anymore and so committed suicide? Guess she would really be letting her team down then, huh?
not competing before a game starts is no where near the same thing as pulling out of an active competition leaving your team in the lurch in the middle of a contest.  The only thing I can think of that is comparable was when Vontae Davis retired from the NFL at half time.  Davis got lambasted and heavily criticized for that because he left his team in a bind by leaving mid-game.  And he retired because well read it yourself, but essentially he no longer was mentally able to do the job.  https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1041456780818042880/photo/1

Definitely worse to pull out during a competition, but what if you don't know that you need to pull out till the competition begins.  It could be that she has historically been able to compete regardless of what was going on internally. Maybe she thought in all sincerity that she was going to be OK... and then she realized she wasn't.  At that point she has to withdraw. It was undoubtedly in the team's best interest for her to withdraw rather than perform poorly and put herself in physical jeopardy.

Ronda Rousey tweeted about Biles:

Quote
Everyone judging @Simone_Biles doesnít know their foot from their a--hole when it comes to being in her position. Sheís on the Olympic team while youíre on Twitter. Whatever is going on cannot be grasped from outside. Sheís doing the absolute best she can given the situation sheís in

Funny, I don't see many athletes slamming Biles for this. Just armchair critics.

EDIT: An interesting tweet thread from Deanna Hong:

Quote
One former US elite gymnast I talked to said that if it was someone other than Simone Biles who had made that same error, they would have certainly blown a knee, at minimum. Another said if it had happened to her instead of Simone, ďI probably would have ended up paralyzed.Ē

Most non-gymnastics fans do not understand the seriousness of what happened because she landed on her feet. Every elite gymnast Iíve talked to has said that Simone Bilesís vault was TERRIFYING and itís a miracle she put that vault to her feet & avoided seriously injuring herself.

Itís not that she made a silly mistake and landed poorly - her mind & body betrayed her in the air while doing one of the hardest vaults in the world, and itís only due to her extreme athleticism that she was able to land safely.

Imagine being driven into the ground directly onto your head/neck/back from 10 feet in the air, with the force of 15x your body weight. THOSE are the stakes here. People need to understand that before they run their mouths.

Simone is an elite athlete and the greatest of all time - she would not take pulling out of two Olympic finals lightly. This is NOT comparable to other sports. Proud of her selfless decision and wishing her the time and space she needs to rest and recover

I'm glad people are sticking up for her.  Anyone that bashes this kid has a problem.  She needs positivity and support not a bunch of arsehats judging her and putting her down.  Shame on anyone who doesn't think this is serious.

Conservatives Blast Simone Biles For Robbing Them Of Opportunity To Criticize Her Win

Accusing her of being selfish and unfit to be a gold medal gymnast, conservatives blasted Simone Biles Wednesday for robbing them of the opportunity to criticize her win.
ďAs of today, Ms. Biles has not only betrayed her country and her fans, but denied us the chance to pick apart every single word she would have said while celebrating a victory for team USA,Ē said Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, adding that if she really was the Greatest of All Time, sheíd have performed and given him plenty of ammunition to call her composure and facial expressions ďsmug,Ē ďungrateful,Ē and ďcocky.Ē
ďWhat Simone Biles has done today is a slap in the face, not for just the United States, not just for gymnastics, but for me and all my colleagues, who had dozens of scathing segments attacking her skimpy uniform, her steely composure, and her recent forays into social justice.
So, Simone, if youíre watching, I hope you and team USA are happy, because now America will never get to hear us call you a sore winner, and equate the gymnastic moves named after you with a tainted legacy.Ē
At press time, Carlson played a clip of Kerri Strug vaulting with a broken ankle, and pointed out how she wasnít afraid to be ripped apart for winning gold.

Honest question - and I am trying to take in everybody's opinion - if Biles lands her first vault, do you think she quits?

On a side note, Larisa Latynina is obviously the goat. As a Cs fan, if you believe Russell is the best ever, then it would be hypocritical to say that Latynina isn't.

It is not at all obvious.  These olympians don't just come out of storage every 4 years.  They compete on a world stage year after year, whether you pay attention or not.  To label someone best ever based only on olympic results is like claiming Eli Manning is better than Aaron Rogers because of their superbowl records.  It's asinine.  Good luck finding anyone in the gymnastics community outside of Russia that would argue against Bile's case.
Latynina didn't only compete in the Olympics though.  She also has 9 gold medals at the World Championships to go along with her 9 gold medals in the Olympics.  She has 4 more silver and 1 bronze in the World championships to go along with her 5 silver and 4 bronze in the Olympics.  She has 7, 6, and 1 in the European championships as well.  And when Larisa competed the World Championships and European Championships were every 4 years, just like the Olympics.  Simone had the benefit of having them every non-Olympic year (so 3 times as many).

There is no question at all Larisa Latynina is the greatest female gymnast of all time.  It isn't close.

Also, as an aside, Larisa competed at the 1958 World Championships while she was pregnant.  Her daughter was born 5 months after the competition.  At those World Championships, she led the Soviet team to the Gold Medal, won the All Around Gold, won the gold medal on 3 apparatus (Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam), and took silver on the floor exercise.  She was 3-4 months pregnant and dominated the world competition.  She told no one she was pregnant so they wouldn't stop her from competing.

Do your homework.  Biles has 19 world championship golds, 25 total.  This on top of her 5 Olympic golds.  If we are going by medal counts, Biles has everyone beat by a country mile.  We havenít even touched on the fact that she has been able to perform physical feats that no other human has.  Again, ask anyone involved with gymnastics where she stands all time and get back to us.

Itís as relevant as the fact that LL was competing at a time where a gymnast could even be competetive at age 34.  Sport is way more physically demanding now.  If someone tried to compete 5 months pregnant in this age and there would be a miscarriage.  Just think, if Simone was born a year earlier, she could have easily brought home multiple Olympic medals in London.  She also lost a year to COVID.  Are we even having this conversation if the games occurred last year?

And Biles is the most individually skilled.
This feels like Jerry Rice vs Randy Moss, lol

To be honest, itís kind of dumb to try to compare eras of any sport.  Bill Russel and Michael Jordan played in completely different leagues.  Gymnasts of the 60ís canít even contemplate what gymnasts are doing today.  You can compare against contemporaries, but cross generational comparisons are bound to run into issues.

Did you read Moís post?  You donít think itís relevant that Biles has 3x more opportunities at World Championships?

I'm in complete agreement. I hesitate to label anyone the out & out goat of a sport (unless it's a Michael Phelps type), and much prefer to do it by era. Like the 2010s were LeBron's, the 90s was Jordan, etc.

I like to compare athletes and try and imagine what they would do with access to the same training, nutrition and upbringing, but that's just a fun mental exercise for fantasy drafts, nothing can be proven

I think it's a disgraceful way to exit a team competition.  She screwed up her vault, then decided to take her ball and go home. This is the outcome of rearing a generation of participation trophy kids.

The New York Times publishes an article entitled "Simone Biles makes a mistake on vault," fueling the narrative deemed socially acceptable by our coastal elites.  Oh my gosh... she made a mistake?! This poor woman!  She can't possibly continue in competition! In 2021, only a sexist or racist would expect one to continue competing for her team!

I don't think it's a coincidence that our woke men's basketball and women's soccer teams have both underperformed thus far; if athletes hate the country their representing, they shouldn't be representatives.

This feels like a PR move to increase her long-term earning capacity; I didn't know who she was prior to these Olympics and suspect many others didn't either, but Olympic athletes tend to fade in memory.

But now, Simone has given herself the opportunity to prolong her legacy and earning capacity in America by.... wait for it... being a victim in America!  It's truly ingenious.  Her play folds perfectly into government-controlled woke culture and "victimitis," at a time when half the country believes we deserve to lose, and the other half wants to see us lose because they reject communism.  It's truly brilliant.

Simone was cool, calm, collected, and showed great interpersonal skills in the post-event presser.  Biles is surrounded by all the world-class resources and mental health support that one could fathom.  Having been around mentally ill people for the majority of my life, personally and professionally, she was absolutely in a state to compete. Whether you agree or disagree with her decision, she was certainly able to compete.

Most of you hate me, and that's okay, but I still hope we can agree that all voices should be heard within community standards.  And I challenge you to ask yourself -- if Simone was a white male, would he have received the same treatment? I highly suspect not.
