Our sister thread to the 2021 Historical Draft Thread to talk and get some accolades and constructive criticism about your teams is now open.

As usual the way this works is you post your team roster, maybe give a brief synopsis of how you think your team will work and if another GM comments about your team, be kind enough to go and comment about their team when they post their roster.

Of course, for outsiders and spectators of the game, your input and critiques are more than welcome.

Last thing to mention, don't take any criticisms of your team too seriously. It's just a game. Be kind to one another.

I will open it up. Here is my current roster:

Phoenix Suns

Starters
PG: (Devin Booker)
SG: Reggie Miller
SF: Danny Granger
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo
C: DeAndre Jordan

Bench
Devin Booker

I think since Giannis will be doing a ton of ball-handling and playmaking from the point forward position, it could be possible to have Booker start as Booker can play both off ball opposite The Freak and as another ball handling playmaker. But most likely, Devin is my Sixth Man.

Thoughts?

Houston Rockets

Starters:
PG: Terry Porter/Gus Williams
SG: Jimmy Butler
SF: Bob Dandridge
PF: Draymond Green
C: Rudy Gobert

Bench:
Terry Porter/Gus Williams

The team is obviously very defensively slanted with every player being at least an above average defender, so my thought process is to start Porter or Gus based on matchups: I'll start Porter against teams who start small guards so he can bully them and go playoff Terry while Gus will start against teams with bigger guards and do what he did so well in the late 70s/early 80s as a scoring PG who could play on or off the ball and drive offences against tough defences if needed. Think my defence will be really tough to score on so I'll be grinding games out, which my perimeter players excel at (Dandridge and Gus were the offensive figureheads of defensively slanted title teams while Butler led Miami to the finals last season in a similar manner).

Thoughts?

I would grab an out and out PG who's stout defensively but can play on and off the ball well to start at PG - I don't like Booker guarding speedy guards. Not sure about how DaJ and Giannis will fit offensively as well, but the defence should be strong with Giannis being a security blanket for DaJ's block chasing.

Thanks. TP4U.

I have three point guards in mind that are exactly the type of player you described. I just felt one would be available at the end of the sixth so went with my targeted and much desired sixth man selection in Booker.

If I get the guy I want in the sixth, I will be using years for my players where all 6 of my top 6 will have a TS% above 60%, some way above that 60% mark.

It's a very good defense but I question your ability to outscore opponents. There will be quite a few high level offenses that also have very good defense.

I question the decision to give up a top 5 player in this draft in Kawhi. Titles are built on elite guys. I am just not sure you have that elite go to guy to win games.

Thanks for thread Nick.
No problem, GF.

Now quick, post your team so I can fawn over how great it is given you were selecting from the 9th spot.

San Antonio Spurs

pg - Mookie
sg - Drexler
sf - Gervin
pf - Hawkins
c - Laimbeer

My thoughts with the team are that they can all play very pesky defense, crowding passing lanes forcing mistakes.
Mookie - 2.7 steals per
Drexler - 2 steals per
Gervin - 2 per game (playoff #s, the team will allow him to play harder on defense, sacrificing offense a bit, more like how he was in playoffs)
Hawkins - 2 per game
Laimbeer - 1 steal per game

That with excellent team rebounding:
Mookie - 5.5
Drexler - 6.5
Gervin - 5
Hawkins - 10.5
Laimbeer - 13.1

And the ability of anyone not named Bill leading and either passing or finishing on the break this team should be able to play strong, tough, smart defense while pressuring the ball non stop and then take any miss or steal and run it down the throat of the opposing team.

In the Halfcourt I see pick and rolls being use with Mookie and Bill, Drexler and Hawkins and Gervin able to go Iso.
'21 Historical Draft
PG: Kyle Lowry / Mookie Blaylock / Mark Jackson
SG: Reggie Miller / Jeff Hornacek / Nick Anderson
SF: George Gervin / George McGinnis / Kyle Korver
PF: Connie Hawkins / Serge Ibaka / Josh Smith
C: Clint Capela / Bill Laimbeer / Jusuf Nurkic

You must have posted this while I was typing my last post. Lol.

I love the fact you put together such a high level team picking from the ninth position while coming into the game like just a day or more before we started. Kudos to you. Job well done.

1-4 I like the defense. Nash, is, unfortunately, Nash on defense. Luckily he is paired next to Lewis, a top notch defender, so should be hidden enough.

Question though. Who is your closer? Who is that go to guy?

The strength and heart of the team is really the three wings. I know you have The Hawk at PF but he is a PF kinda like Tatum is a PF. Hawk was more wing/swing like. I love that you have a couple different guys that can dominantly create their own and score against just about anyone.

Don't like the Laimbeer pick or fit. I thought someone more athletic at that position would have worked better with the speed and athleticism the rest of the team has.

Very good start to the team and very high quality given your draft slot. Clyde Drexler was the steal of the 1st round

I like Bill, but I can see your point. He is physically the opposite of everyone else on the team.
I wanted him to deal with Moses and Gasol. I felt he was the best for that role and didnt think he would last until late in the draft.

But I do think that there are alot more centers that can fill the roll later in the draft, and there is still the option of me going small ball completely. Which I am still leaning towards.

Great closing question, lol...

My guess - so far - is that it'd be "Closer by Committee"....

I think Nash, Marc and Milsap could fill that role....even though I'm still looking at making some key additions through the draft  - especially with that 2nd pick next round.

Perhaps Reggie? he started to show some guts playing next to Larry...that epic CHI game in the early 90s where Larry went off (and Reggie was right behind him with 32 points of his own) showed me flashes of greatness with him....

The Toronto Raptors thus far, still missing a SG, but we have a few in mind.  Overall, we think we will be able to outscore everyone, even with the guy that may be the worst offensive player on any team manning the middle.  We especially like the versatility that our 6th man brings to the big man rotation as he is a nice complement to both starters.

Guards - Tiny Archibald
Wings - Peja Stojakovic
Bigs - Karl Malone, Ben Wallace, Spencer Haywood

A 2 Time MVP, an ABA MVP, a 4 time DPOY, the only man in history to lead league in points and assists in same year, and one of the most lethal shooters ever.  Love the talent and think the fit is pretty darn good as well.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip
