So my plan for this team solidified itself in the 4th round with the selection of Marc Gasol. I was going back and forth between building a team in this style (a big lineup) or whether to go with Pau at center alongside a quicker PF to play uptempo.

My team plan is similar to the Spanish National team - both because I admire their team makeup and because I got both of their starting bigs who formed the foundation of that team.

Twin towers alongside 3 outside shooters to space the floor for them. Basic enough. My twin towers are both highly gifted passers and with Nash at PG, this team should share the ball well. Unselfish guys who will look for the best shot for the team rather than just themselves.

Big fan of your frontcourt.   Great big man passing and spacing should be fine.

Not a huge fan of Nash in this exercise so really interested to see who you pair him with in the backcourt.  Think you need a certain type of guard there.

Ah, okay. Sorry, I did not understand that.

I thought you gave your thoughts on teams after someone posted their lineup and asked for feedback. Nobody had posted a team yet so there was none to comment on. So I put my team up to get things started.

I love the offence of Who's team - I think it is by far the best in the league as of right now. Nash was one of the finest offensive engines in NBA history: the dynastic offences he led in Phoenix and to an extent in Dallas (Dallas trotted out defensive lineups at times and they still smashed it in team offensive metrics due to Nash's excellence as an on ball centrepiece) gives him a strong argument for a top 5 offensive peak of all time imo. With an incredible offensive superstar who amplifies the value of on ball engines in Kevin Durant as his teammate as well as two versatile big men in the Gasol brothers, I think that offence has all the qualities of a dynastic Nash quarterbacked offence while having incredible complementary pieces to add extra value. I do question the defence due to the Gasol brothers being better rim protectors than perimeter defenders, but that offence is brain breaking.

Scary good team. Love the combo of the Gasol brothers with Nash setting things up for them and one of the greatest scorers of all time in KD. Strong inside defense but definitely would recommend a few perimeter stoppers to hide Nash

Yeah, I was the same at the start of this exercise and then action781 pointed out that Nash could benefit a lot from playing in today's era -- where PGs are asked to score more and not be as pass-first as Nash was. That Nash could increase his scoring volume as a result.

This goes along with interviews from Nash who said he regrets not shooting more (especially 3s). That he would take 20 shots a game if he still played today. That he would play more like Steph Curry today than his own playing style from 2005.

That idea really stuck with me.

I had been thinking of Nash as run'n'gun playmaker / facilitator. A guy who could be an MVP candidate if you build a team solely around him. Or would drop to 3rd team All-NBA like Nash was in Dallas before that if the team did not solely function around him.

But scoring Nash? ...

That guy could be a lot more valuable across different situations. That guy interested me a lot.

-----------------------

That is what I hope for him here. Curry-lite sorta thing.

I'd love to see an aggressive scoring Nash as my second scorer behind Kevin Durant.

I love my team’s offense. Everyone can pass the ball and space the floor. Can run some high low action with Jokic and C-Webb. Jokic has the size to defend some of the bigger centers, and can pull them out of the paint with his floor spacing ability and open up driving lanes for Kobe. Also C-Webb is incredibly strong and while not a traditional rim protector, was a very underrated defender. Our pick and roll/pop with the combination of any of these 4 guys intrigues me too. Some might question the Jokic selection instead of picking a true rim protector at center- but the idea of having an open floor for Kobe and Dame was too intriguing. Not to mention Jokic is one of the best passing bigs of all time, and Webber is pretty elite in that category too. I’m not too worried about our defense, though obviously it’s not our strongest attribute. I think this team will dominate offensively and hold their own on D. A couple good 3 and D guys and I think we’re pretty dangerous.

Interested to see how the Kobe/Dame dynamic works.

Jokic & C-Webb is awesome.  I also took Jokic instead of Yao.   The nice thing with Webber is that he won't clog the paint with Jokic.  He can roam around and free things up inside for Jokic.   Run plays off the high post too with both Dame & Kobe as cutters.   That's scary since they're both amazing at attacking the the basketball.

Should be a very dynamic offense.

I think the offence is fantastic, you have a great offensive engine (albeit not as transcendent as Nash) in Kobe while having another explosive guard in Lillard who can fit together decently in the backcourt, while the frontcourt is probably the best passing frontline in the league right now with Jokic and Webber. Don't like the defence though, your best defenders are Webber and Kobe (solid at best). I think you can really use a defensive savant at SF who finishes like a monster.

I love the Jokic selection.

I was a bit uneasy about Dame & Kobe. I loved Kobe & C-Webb and Dame & C-Webb. But I was unsure about Dame & Kobe. Those are two high volume scoring guards. I was unsure how well your team would keep everyone else involved with your guards shooting & scoring so much.

Step forward the best passing big man in NBA History - Nikola Jokic. The guy is a one-man offense. His passing is ridiculous. He is the absolute perfect guy to balance out a high scoring backcourt and Jokic will love playing with guards who can score like Kobe and Lillard can.

Jokic is perfect for C-Webb too. I was worried about C-Webb next to a rim-protector like Gobert or Mutombo. That they would clog the lane and force C-Webb to spend too much time on the perimeter. Webber had his best seasons in Sacramento for a reason. It was the only time he played PF next to a high post passing center. Jokic is perfect for Webber. Both guys can go high post or low post - they will feed each other. Give each other better opportunities. Make each other better.

No center does more on offense to make his teammates better than Nikola Jokic. The guy is a genius.

Like I said in the draft thread, I had him rated as a mid 2nd round pick. Incredible get in the 4th round. Jokic and Ginobili were my favourite picks of the day. Both guys are terrific.

Thoughts?

I like the talent value at every pick but as teams are being formed, I don't know if your defense is going to be good enough to hide two players at once.   (heck I think it is going to be really hard to hide just one player)

Again, depending on who you get to fill out the starting lineup, I don't think any team will be able to hide a bad defender against your team.

Finally, (as I said before, I always have to say this), can Kobe share the ball that much?

I like the Kobe / Lillard duo in a vacuum.  Offensively, I like the Webber / Jokic duo.  But, collectively, I think the defense will have a rough time.

What’s the offensive philosophy here?  How does Kobe fit within that?
