RULES

DO NOT DISCUSS UNDRAFTED PLAYERS IN THIS THREAD

Each player will be assigned a team and run that team as it's owner. Players to be drafted will be any player that played in the NBA from the 1999-2000 season to present season. Once a player is drafted he is the property of that team. Once all rounds of the draft are over, each owner will be required to submit a roster picking the season that each of his or her players will be represented by. The season chosen must be a season within the career of the player that is also within the timeframe of the game 1999-2000 to present.

Example:

If your starting five consists of LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Gianni's Antetokounmbo, Chris Paul and Jayson Tatum , you must select which season each player will be represented by.

James - 2011-12
Shaq - 1999-00
Giannis 2018-19
Paul - 2013-14
Tatum - 2019-20

After the draft is completed, each team owner will be required to submit a team roster with each player and the year you selected for them to be judged on.

The draft will be a snake draft. The draft will start on Monday March 23rd, 2020 and go until Wednesday April 1st, 2020. There will be 12 rounds. On the first 4 days of selections, March 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th, there will be one round per day with picks in 15 minute intervals.

The 5th through 12th rounds will be two rounds per day for 4 days with picks in 10 minute intervals.  These rounds will take place on March 30th, 31st and April 1st. When the draft ends there will be a period over the next day to trade and the trade deadline will end on Thursday, April 2nd at midnight EST, at which point, all final rosters with a minimum of 12 players will need to be submitted to the commissioner by Friday April 3rd at noontime. All times are EST.

Once you have submitted your final roster, you will be able to discuss why your team is the best in this thread up until your votes will be required to be PMed to the commissioner on Monday, April 5th at midnight EST. There will be two conferences of 7 teams. Your votes will include rankings for each conference and top 13 best teams...13 because you can't vote for your own team.

Teams will be awarded points based on inverted order of the top 14 teams. 13 points for a #1 vote down to 1 point for a #13 vote. Team with the most points will be declared winner of their conference and overall winner. Team from the other conference with the most points wins their conference.

If two teams tie for the overall championship and are from different conferences, tie breaker will go to the team with the most #1 votes. If still tied, team with most #2 votes wins, if still tied most #3 votes wins and so on. If tied until the end the game will have co-champions.

If there is a tie for conference champions as shown from the overall vote, that is when the conference votes will be need to used to determine conference champions. Team that has most conference votes wins the tie breaker and if there are still tied, tiebreakers will work similar to the overall tiebreaker rules.

Teams will be assigned to players on Friday, March 20th, 2020 at 7:00PM EST and the draft lottery will be held at the same time. There will be a trading moratorium in place until  Monday March 23nd at 9AM at which point trades can be made and/or announced. All trades will need to meet league approval. If I feel there is a trade that is questionable and not in the interest of the game, I as commissioner will disallow it. I, as commissioner, will have final word and approval. Also note, we are trading the best players during the time period having their best seasons so most trades will probably get approved unless there is some outlier of a trade or decided unfair. If I feel a trade is unfair I will ask for the parties to go back and renegotiate. Trades must be presented to the commissioner by both parties via personal message and announced by the commissioner before they are considered done. If trying to beat a deadline on the time for a pick, make the selection for the team and then do the trade.

The main rule here is the same for all of CelticsStrong, respect each other and have fun. Friendly banter is allowed and encouraged but ultimately this is for fun. The commissioner will have the authority to replace team owners due to behavior or lack of performance. In the event of the inability to find a suitable replacement, the team could be dissolved and the players re-entered into the draft. This will be a decision that will be avoided at all costs and will be a last resort scenario.

Discuss advice on your team from the people publicly in thread but, discuss individual players that have yet to be picked with people via PM. Remember, people will put a lot of thought and research into who they may want to select, so please refrain from talking about undrafted players in public. This is a very serious rule. Please abide by it.

Picks are due before the time listed in the Draft Thread. Owners may make their selection at anytime before their allotted deadline so long as the owner of the pick in front of them has made their pick or exceeded his/her allotted deadline.

If an owner will not be available to make a selection he can give a list of players that he would be willing to draft in preferential order to the commissioner, who will make the selection. IMPORTANT: Please supply a list long enough to still have one available player left in case all the teams selecting in front of you happen to select all the players you desire. As a fill-in selector I CAN NOT arbitrarily make the selection for you, I must have a name of a player that is provided to me that is available.

If for some reason an owner does not make a selection then at 10:00 AM on the morning after the round where a selection was not made, I will be making the selection for the team. I keep my own draft board and will give you best available player from that list regardless of fit. So please, don't let this happen.

Highest rated available player will be assigned to the team that missed their pick at that time. If more than one selection needs to be assigned then the best available player will go to the team that had the highest pick, the 2nd best player to the team with the second highest pick, and so on. If an owner of a team misses two picks without good reason(the commissioner will determine whether the reason was good), the owner is subject to losing the team and another owner will be searched for as a replacement.

HAVE FUN!!

Please post that you abide by these rules after reading them.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

#1 ANNOUNCEMENT: Please when making your selection, state your team and the pick you are using. Let's use a standard system for naming picks. Something like:

Round(pick in round)

Such that the 5th pick in round 3 = 3(5)
Pick 1 in round 8 = 8(1)

You get the point.

Also, use this abbreviation for picks in trades and if you can make the trade similar to this:

Team 1 sends 5(7) and 9(4)
Team 2 sends 6(12) and 7(1)

So a standard announcement of your pick would be:

The Brooklyn Nets with pick 13(13) select Kyrie Irving

All this just makes things easier for me and will make the game easier and more enjoyable to you.

#2 ANNOUNCEMENT: These games at CelticsStrong will last only as long as any confrontational, overly critical or disrespectful ways of saying things lasts. The history of these games is once talk like that starts so do confrontations, hard feelings, disrespectful posting, drama and subsequent suspensions from using the site. I kid you not this has led to some bad stuff in the past. So, please, try to state things as respectfully as you can, especially criticism. For example: Instead of "horrible" or "crazy" pick, just say it's a pick that might be too early or one you might not make.

#3Announcement

Due to illness, DefenseWinsChamps has stepped down from his duties as GM of the Houston Rockets. Taking his place will be poster:

freshinthehouse

freshinthehouse was looking to join the game right after I had done lottery and team assignments. His desire to play appears fortuitous and I hope everyone gives him a hearty welcome.

#4 ANNOUNCEMENT

More Rounds! More Playoffs! More Talking Basketball! More Camaraderie! More Fun!

A decision was reached to expand the game some so that we can all spend more of our coronavirus induced downtime doing something we like. So:

A 13th and 14th rounds of the draft will be added on Thursday, April 2nd. Yes, we know this won't affect overall quality of teams but it will expand things another day. It also gives us more days to talk about your teams and players.

The additional draft day will mean pushing back the due date for when rosters are due. So I will allow trades to be made up until 6:00PM EDT on Sunday, April 5th and final rosters must be submitted by midnight that night.

Instead of voting just one time and that vote being used to determine a winner, we have decided to hold 4 votes. The initial vote will be to determine order of finish in the league and each conference, as usual.

Initial vote will take place on Monday, April 6th and all votes will need to be sent into the commissioner by 6:00 PM EST. Results will be posted before noon on Tuesday, April 7th.

The top two teams in each conference will then go head to head in votes to determine our Finals teams and the last vote will occur to select league champion.

On Tuesday, April 7th, after the league results are announced I will open up two threads where each team can post their rosters and discuss how they would match up against their opponent. Please don't hesitate to participate.

Votes on who wins each matchup will need to be sent in by every GM, even if your team is no longer playing. This is very important. We need participation by everyone until the end to do this right.

Voting for who wins the Conference Finals will be due into the commissioner on Wednesday, April 8th by 6:00 PM EST. The results will be posted before noon on Thursday April 9th.

Then the thread for the Finals will be opened where the final two teams can go head to head. Voting for the Finals will be due by Friday, April 10th at 6:00PM and I will announce our 2020 Historical Finals Champion at 8:00PM EDT that same Friday.

Initial voting will not change. For the initial vote, vote for total league standings and conference standings. League standings will be determined as set out in the rules, but conference standings will be determined differently. Teams will be awarded points based on finish in the conference. 6 points for 1st, 5 for 2nd and so on. Tiebreakers will be determined as explained in the OP by using who had more 1st place votes, then 2nd place votes, etc. The top two teams in each conference advance.

In the playoffs, vote for the team you think will win and provide the tally for the record of the series. Example: NY vs DET. I select NY 4-2. Teams involved in the playoffs can not vote on the game they are involved in, only the other game.

Conference tiebreakers will be determined by the team with the least amount of losses winning. If there is still a tie, the team that placed higher wins due to having home court advantage.

In the Finals, if there is a tie, it will be broken by the team with the least losses winning. If the result is tied, the team with the higher league standing wins due to home court advantage. Again, GMs of the two teams can not vote.

For once I'll be a law abiding citizen  :-X

I just realized that my regular working hours are actually office hours in the US  :D

Right now I'm busy, because I've got a lot of catching up to do   . A possible soccer draft which was mentioned would have been much easier for me since I've seen every major game since 1996. Can't say the same for the NBA  :-[ .

Good luck to everyone but the Lakers!

They had the 2nd pick 3 seasons in a row, plus they moved up from #11 to #4 last summer. If they get "lucky" once again, the lottery is definitely rigged! :P

It's really hard to sleep when you're worrying about when the next paycheck will come in, if any. Can't really go out of the house except for important needs like food.

I can't wait for this to start. This is going to be a very good distraction for an otherwise already stressful week.

Man, this virus thing sucks. . .

Was any decision made about 2019-20 players?

Are they eligible or ineligible?

Oh sorry, I should have checked the rules.

That's good. Lot of fun new players having breakout years this season. Adds to the draft pool.

Hang in there, Yoki.

Pretty much all I can do at this point, Roy. At least I have family here keeping me sane.

Which is why I'm so happy that this game is being organized. It should provide a necessary distraction from the real world for a while. Thanks to Master Nick for doing this.

Hope all is well there on your end, and to everyone in CelticsBlog. I heard from folks in CA that the state is on a full blown lockdown. So essentially, in either parts of the world that I lived in, I'm going to be stuck in the same position. LOL

I figured I would make it easy for everyone, and just draft the 1997 Celtics. Yes, I understand that they did not play in the appropriate era. But for such a juggernaut I think an exception is appropriate.
