Title: Who do you root for?? (Soccer/Football)
Post by: Hoyo de Monterrey on January 11, 2009, 02:04:42 PM
Let's identify some allegiances on the blog for fun, or in case all the Man U fans unite to overthrow the rest of the mods and we need to know who we can trust  ;)

I personally am a Newcastle supporter, but I know I'm not the only soccer/football fan on the blog. If you support a favorite team, let us know about it!

Also, if you're just going to bash the game, start your own thread.

Toon Army!

Was given my first United kit for my first birthday and haven't looked back since. Needless to say, I'm passionate.

I'll also stand by my promise to TP everyone who replies to any thread I post in today because I'm so happy we demolished Chelsea.

New England Revolution, I am serious too, locally at least. Globally, I am a two-timer, I root for Man U and Chelsea, I have no real allegiance to either team, just like to see the best soccer players play. I also root for Newcastle as well for that matter, their beer lead me to their team. When it comes to national squads, I go USA all the way, but love Nederland and Germany.

Porto, the best soccer club in the world.

We'd be perennial Champions League winners if we weren't forced to sell our best players. We still do very well, considering our limitations.

Man Utd.  I studied abroad in Cork, Ireland, in 1998, and the fans there were in love with local boy Roy Keane.  After watching them play, I adopted them as my team of choice.

I realized something after I wrote this, that when Chelsea and Manchester play, I do pull for Man U, so I guess put me in that category. Being a fan of Chelsea and Man U, is like being a Celtics and a Lakers fan, it just ain't an option. Drogba and Ballack just happen to be two of my favorite players.

In regards to the MLS I am a Revolution fan, I've been to two MLS cup games, both being Revs vs. Galaxy... sadly they didn't win either. In regards to international play I root for Germany as I am Irish and German, but it's not like Ireland will ever make it to the cup... I also pull for the US.

If this is just a Premier League discussion then I'd have to say the Spurs (Tottenham Hotspur). Been a fan since the late 90's when a Dane called Allan Nielsen did quite well for them.

But my 'primary' team has to be AC Milan, followed them since I was 6 years old :)

I rather see ManU win than Chelsea.

I´m fan of a small team in the german second league. We´re currently in second place, and last time we got promoted (12 years ago), won the Championship the very next year. Would be great to see history repeating itself.

Kaiserslautern? Those Rehhagel engineered team with Ratinho/Ramzy/Ballack/Dkorkaeff, etc were funny. I wouldn't call them a small team.

Yepp, we`re probably the biggest "small" team in Germany, but other teams have much more money to spend. Terrible decisions in the FO forced the club to sell their stadium and youth center. Last season, they avoided relegation to the third league at the last minute, so I`m really happy with the way things are going right now. Ex-nationalplayer Stefan Kuntz has done an outstanding job as teammanager and formed this team in one off-season.

Scott - If I could, I'd take that TP back ;) Just kidding. But I do hate Arsenal.

Casperian - Kaiserslautern are definitely not a small team. However, if you get promoted this year I don't see the title on the cards for you in 2010.

What can I say, I have to stick with them but that loss to Wigan yesterday hurt.  Back down in bottom three again but I remain hopeful that they can avoid relegation.

I couldn't agree with you more on Arsenal, hate them with a passion.  Anyone that hates Arsenal deserves a TP (thats your TP back :)).

Barça! Easily the best team in the world right now.

And in England, Fulham. We're tough since Hodgson took over, at least considering our squad. Never liked Manu, and far less that son of a b***, Roy Keane, who went around injuring players on purpose. Chelsea have lost their charisma since Mourinho - who must be the world's top manager - left.
The Premier is fun this year with Liverpool finally on top and Villa strong as well. Interesting to see, too, that the Spurs are struggling badly after somer fluke good games under then back then new manager Redknapp. As if it had all been Juande's fault that management decided to sell its two top scorers late in preseason...

PS: That Lautern team's "architect" and key player was Sforza...

I'm not bothered about the not liking United part, we're hated all over. But Keane injuring players on purpose? Once, with Alfe-Inge Haaland, did Keane intentionally set out to hurt someone and that was an act of retribution. Please name another occasion where he hurt a fellow professional "on purpose". Clearly, you never watched Keane play otherwise you'd never have made that ridiculous comment.

"Clearly, you never watched Keane play otherwise you'd never have made that ridiculous comment."

... and I ask myself, have you? Keane even stated as much in his autobiography and I quote: "I'd come to one firm conclusion, which was to stay on the pitch for ninety minutes in every game. In other words, to curb the reckless, intemperate streak in my nature that led to sendings-off and injuries. —Keane on his 'new' style of play". Not to mention when he broke McAteer's nose and was suspended by his own manager!

The Haaland incident was as despisable as it gets on a football pitch. He ended the guy's career on purpose!! Retribution for what? For fouling Haaland from behind years before and injuring himself? Come on...

In football - and especially for central/defensive midfielders - there is a difference between playng hard and playing dirty. Keane used to do the latter until he changed his bad habits towards the end of his player career.

He had a temper, he would get into fights/confrontations with players. Argument after argument, but never did he try to break their legs or severely injure them. He had a typical CM's temperament. I think you're calling him a "dirty" player based on a few lines from his book as opposed to actually watching him play.

And yeah, I've probably watched every game (or at least 95%) Roy Keane played in the Red of United and the Green of Ireland.

Don`t really like the big clubs, so if it is possible I root for the smaller ones...

In England I like Arsenal the most out of the big four. Just love how they play when they are in form. Remind me of Ajax from a decade ago. This season I am going with Villa, they have some great young prospects and O`neal has done a wonderful job.

In Spain I prefer Barca over Real.

In Germany I root against Bayern. The most arrogant team in the world, don`t despise any team more then them. I like Hoffenheim since I started following them when they promoted to second devision 2 years ago. Their development has been unbelievable! And I am also a Kaiserslautern fan from the year they won Bundesliga as a promotion side. Loved Olaf Marshall on that team!

As for the premier league, my favorite has always been, and will be this years premier league and champions league champs....LIVERPOOL...though torres has been injured, they have not lost a beat, with gerrard kuyt keane, i love this team. and as for the most exciting player, im not goin to go with the cliche answer of cristiano ronaldo, but didier drogba. that much power, that much speed is jus amazing

Ok, then we´re the smallest "big" team in the country^^. And I don´t see us winning the league, either...but a fan can dream. This season, they play very entertaining and have great offensive defenders. That´s already more than I could hope for 6 months ago, so even if they won´t get promoted, I´d call it a succesful season.

Sforza was my favourite player in the early nineties, a playmaker with exceptional defense and high IQ, but the architect was Otto Rehhagel, there´s no doubt about it. Sforza was also always a troublemaker, so he wasn´t really the leader of the team. Olaf Marschall was a typical 80ies striker in the late 90ies. Even ten years later, I can´t put my finger on what exactly made him so efficient. Also very underrated is Mario Basler, who was probably one of the most skilled german players ever, but could only play 60 minutes due to his conditioning.
TP all around, I don´t get many chances to talk about the 1. FCK on the internet. (And yeah, **** Bayern)

Regarding Keane, I have to say that I was never more afraid of any ManU player when a german team played them, but I was also always concerned about injuries. Roy Keane played at the limit, and sometimes stepped over the line, but I don´t think he ever tried to injure an opponent on purpose. If a player would really play that way, he would be out of the league in a short time, because opposing teams would try to injure him first.

I understand the quote Markeras posted as if Keane knew his relentless style of play would cause injuries for himself.

Well there is the team i support with all my heart and a couple of european teams that i like to follow.

So my team is the competely unknown (unless you are interested in volleyball) team Iraklis Thessaloniki. A few years ago we played against Kaiserslautern , so maybe Casperian knows us :D

Other that Real Madrid and Man Un are the teams i like from the major clubs since early-mid 80s. There was a weekly show about english football and one game live and Man Un although not at their best were very popular.

On the other hand Real Madrid was in top flight with Sanchez, Buyo, Gordillo ,Camacho, of course Butragenio. I think the all white outfit attracted me. The clashes against Milan are still legendary (although the italians crushed us a couple of times)

I root for the Patriots and for no one in soccer.

Well, I guess I liked the women's U.S. olympic soccer team when they took off their shirts.

I realize that soccer is an intricate and universally-loved game, but there just isn't enough scoring, and for me, the majority of the games are like watching paint dry.  That's why the anoouncers bellow at the top of their lungs for at least 10 minutes when someone actually scores.

I don't like golf either.  As Karl Malone said, it just spoils a nice walk.

No offense, but I think most Europeans we have the same feeling about baseball and american football. IMO, American football looks too mechanic and baseball is simply boring. But of course, I dont know anything about those sports so take my words for what it worth.

Concerning football (soccer), I support FC Barcelona, after a couple of dissapointing seasons, it looks that this year we are again in the good truck. Sorry celticsmaestro, Cristiano Ronaldo will see next year Messi picking up the golden ball :-)

To be accurate messi had an impressive 2008 second half. Lately he seems a little off.

Besides , barcelona won`t win anything this season ;-) and that counts as a disadvantage

I watch Watford, currently in the Championship. I've missed 4 home game in the last 15 seasons.

I also support Glasgow Celtic in Scotland and try to get to see them play once each season.

I went to Kaiserslautern in 1983 to see Watford's first ever UEFA Cup game.
We lost 3 - 1, but won the 2nd leg 3 - 0. Those were the days.

You may have a conversation with Casperian, our resident Lautern fan.

I support the Portsmouth Football Club
Current holders of the FA Cup (until this weekend)
We also have the unique distiction of having held the FA Cup for the longest period
1939-1946, (although we only won it once in all that time...stupid WWII) ::)

Play up Pompey
The Aussie National team is gonna frighten some folks in the next world cup
look out

AC Milan. This season we have a pretty Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ty team, but we will come back. Big teams always find their way back on top. After all, Milan won more international trophies than any other team 8)

Real Madrid, even though I don´t like the stardom and media around its players anymore.

I was a big fan until the 1st Florentino Pérez era. After that it's all about money, parties, commercials... But hey, still I support them and watch some matches

Liverpool were the reason why I even started watching soccer in the first place. First love by a mile.

The mid nineties team that couldn't win anything but played the most beautiful soccer in Europe; with Redknapp, Barnes, Fowler, McManaman, McAteer, etc.

My son's been a Liverpool fan since Michael Owen started playing for them. Basically they're my adopted EPL team as I see most of their games and root for them in most cases.

Being a big Roma fan, having Liverpool/AS Roma exhibition games at Fenway twice in three years has been extremely cool. This local ownership is awesome.

Became a leeds united fan in the late 1990s. Then money problems came in during the noughties its been one farce of a season followed by another. Currently wallowing in the championship wondering if being sold to a shady Italian business man, with prior criminal convictions might actually be a turn for the better.

Portsmouth are my English team. The last few years have been awful but hopefully better things are around the corner...

Arsenal! I think they might be legit title contenders for the first time in a number of years in 2014-15 too.

I've said this in the other thread but I've been a Manchester United fan since the very late 80's and I have also followed my home town team of Hayes FC (Later to merge to become Hayes & Yeading United FC) for the past 20 years. They can usually be found somewhere between the Football Conference National league or as low as the Conference South league lol

Marching On Together   Followed Leeds United since 1962 (year of my birth). Confident they can be back in the EPL before I die. TP to LatterDayCelticsfan
