I am sitting down with Lebron and convincing him to re-sign with the promise of trading the Brooklyn pick, Thompson, Shumpert, Frye, Rose, Love for Gasol, Conley. Watching the game, their team chemistry is terrible and their backcourt is atrocious. The worst players to have on your team are former washed up superstars who don't understand their new limitations and that is Rose and Wade. Love isn't a centre and Thompson offers nothing on offence, I think this is the best deal Memphis can get and gives them the chance to stay somewhat competitive while getting a future franchise guy in return. A starting five of Gasol, Crowder, James, Smith, Conley (with Wade, Thomas off the bench) is perfectly balanced and offers rebounding, size, defence, versatility, spacing and shooting. Every time Gasol have played the Warriors he's burned them with his size and post game and Conley is the point for a Lebron team as he (along with Gasol) have no ego and he is happy off the ball, can shoot and is a scrappy defender. If at seasons end Thomas doesn't want to play off the bench so be it he can leave as you have Conley but if he does you have some cap flexibility with the salary dump of Shumpert and Frye.

Why would Memphis do that?

Because Ainge did the exact same thing, Gasol is 32 turning 33 and Conley is 30 on a terrible roster with no cap flexibility in a stacked conference = they are going no where. They either do this or become perennial 8-10th contenders until Gasol and Conley retires, with this they actually get younger, deeper and get a possible franchise player in a stacked draft.

Memphis will do that in a heartbeat next year.

Decent idea. Don't love it if I am Memphis but they aren't going anywhere soon.

I'm sure it'd hurt trading Gasol especially, given his connection to the city but there is no other option, their management really stuff up with that contract to an injury riddled Parsons and like the Clippers they missed on too many draft picks.

I don't see why the Cavs would need to trade both Thompson and Love in that deal.  Nor why someone like Rose would need to be included (he does nothing for Memphis so why would they want him).
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Because they need to make the salaries work and both players have become redundant for Cleveland, that’s why they’ve tried so many line up changes as Thompson and Love can’t start together anymore, I’d include Rose too because not only is he finished but he’s going to be a locker room problem if he’s no longer playing, Memphis will get short term point guard cover and Rose comes off the books next season.

If I'm the Cavs, yes my first move is to meet with Lebron and simply say we need to keep the pick unless you extend. It's either up or down.

But even then, they still need to get better and eliminate redundancy created by the trade. So put together a package of nonstarters or limited role specialists, and see what's out there. Thompson falls victim to the Kardashian curse and gets packaged with Korver and Frye for youth and length.  They could well send IT right along as well if they get the right player. No idea who bites, but the Knicks could use Thompson for what Noah was supposed to do. Nets need better players.

But really, if the Gris go rebuild and trade Conley and/or Gasol; a package with Thompson and IT, who they then plan to resign, makes sense if they add the BKN pick.  But then it makes tons of sense both ways. They'll still start Wade, but JR and Crowder join Lebron as the main wings, minutes wisE.

Who is the future franchise guy? Love? Love is already in his prime.

You can't be talking about the pick, considering the Nets are no longer expected to be the worst team and odds are that is not going to be a top 3 pick. Odds are they aren't getting someone who will be as good as Conley is right now.

I'm not giving an opinion on the reasonableness of the trade itself.

When did Ainge do this?

Ainge had Ray Allen walk out on him at the age of 37 o pursue free agency.  He then traded Pierce and KG away (at age 36 and 37, respectively) for picks and salary filler.

That's a vastly different to trading your star players away at the age of 30-33.  Hell Ray and KG were around that age range when Danny traded FOR them.

they don't need both of their salaries included to match and they absolutely need one of them to play with Gasol

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
I don't see Memphis making any deal. They are going to run this year with a new playing style and hope in Parsons coming around.
I do see the Cavs making a move. If they want to have a chance to win one more they  have too. Bledsoe may be the guy if they get him on the cheap. Tyson Chandler too.

So Memphis takes on a bunch of bad contracts in exchange for their best players? Where do people come up with these scenarios
