Game Notes
After a win over the Clippers on Wednesday,  the Celtics move on to the 3rd game of their 4 game road trip as they take on the Golden State Warriors.  The top team in the East takes on the top team in the West.  This is the 3rd game of a 3 game home stand for the Warriors before they head out on a 3 game road trip.  This is the second and final meeting between these two teams in the regular season.

In spite of most people expecting the Cavaliers or the Raptors to come out of the East,  it's a very possible Finals preview.   The Celtics are the only team with a winning record over the Warriors since the 2015-16 season.  Over that span, the Celtics are 3-2 over the Warriors with 2 of those 3 wins at Oracle arena.   The rest of the league was 31-176 over that same time.

The Celtics went 1-1 vs the Warriors last season with each team winning on the road.   The Celtics are 6-4 over their last 10 games and are 1-1 so far on their current road trip.  They are 13-4 against Western teams and 17-6 on the road.  The Warriors are 8-2 in their last 10 games and have won their last 2 games.  They are 18-3 against the East and 18-6 at home.

The Celtics started the road trip pretty much healthy but find themselves struggling with injuries 3 games into it.  Gordon Hayward is with the Celtics on this trip and is making strides in his recovery but remains out with the ankle injury.  Guerschon Yabusele is out with a sprained ankle.   The Celtics will miss Marcus Smart as he is expected to miss the next 2 weeks with a cut on his hand from a picture frame at his hotel.

The good news for the Celtics is that after missing the last game for observation,  Al Horford is expected to return for this game.  The Warriors are pretty much healthy.  Kevin Durant is listed with left foot soreness but is expected to play.  Patrick McCaw is probable with a back injury.  Jordan Bell is listed as day to day with an ankle injury.

Key Matchups
(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/202681.png)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/stephen_curry.png)
Kyrie Irving vs Stephen Curry
This is a preview of the starting point guards for next month's All Star Game.  Both players are very tough to stop and can put up a lot of points in a hurry.  Kyrie will need to play defense as there is no hiding on anyone on the Warriors.  All of them are a threat to score.  Curry is averaging 27.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.65steals.  He is shooting 49% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1628369.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/kevin_durant.png)
Jayson Tatum vs Kevin Durant
The Celtics' rookie will be tasked with trying to slow down former MVP Kevin Durant.  Durant is averaging 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.07 blocks.  He is shooting 51.1% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc.  Tatum will have his work cut out for him and will need every bit of that maturity and defense that he has been showing so far this season.

Honorable Mention
Jaylen Brown vs Klay Thompson
The Celtics youngsters are going to be challenged in this game for certain, especially on the defensive end as they try to slow down the Warriors' stars.  Thompson is averaging 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.  He is shooting 48.8% from the field and 45.7% from 3 point distance.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- The Warriors can put up points quickly and in bunches.  They are averaging a league leading 116.1 points per game.   It will be important for the Celtics to bring their league leading defensive intensity into this game, especially to shut down the Warriors' fast breaks as they can get up the floor very quickly and are averaging a league best 18.3 fast break points.   The Celtics must especially guard the perimeter as the Warriors are very dangerous from beyond the arc, shooting 40% on 3 pointers as a team.   The Celtics hope of winning this game is to play lock down defense. The Warriors aren't terrible on defense with a defensive rating of 103.3, good for 6th in the league.

Rebound - The Celtics need to crash the boards to keep the Warriors from igniting their fast breaks. The Celtics also need to rebound to give themselves second chance points and limit the second chance points for the Warriors. This is one area that the Celtics have a slight advantage over the Warriors.  The Celtics are 10th with 44.4 rebounds per game while the Warriors are 12th with 44.2 rebounds per game.  The Celtics are 23-0 when they out rebound their opponents.

Take Care of the Ball - The Warriors can be very disruptive by getting into the passing lanes, averaging 8.1 steals per game. The Celtics need to stay focused and not give the Warriors any easy opportunities to steal the ball or to get out on the break.  If the Celtics get sloppy with the ball, the Warriors will make them pay.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to come out focused and play hard from start to finish. The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team throughout the game. They must be aggressive on defense, on the boards, in chasing down loose balls, and in taking the ball to the hoop and not settling for jumpers.  They will need energy and extra effort from every player on the team.

Play the Right Way
- Over the 4 game losing streak, for some reason, the Celtics lapsed into hero ball with each player trying to do too much individually.  They weren't passing the ball and instead were dribbling too much and taking bad shots at the end of the shot clock.  The Celtics got back to team ball against the Clippers and we saw them crashing the boards as a team and passing the ball to find the open man.  They were also once again setting the pace and being aggressive on defense.  We need to see more of that in this game.

X-Factors
Bench Play
- Both of these teams are relatively deep.  The Celtics bench is averaging 45.1 points and 23 rebounds per game.  The Warriors bench is averaging 50.8 points and 25.5 rebounds per game.  The Celtics starters aren't as dominant as the Warriors' starters and so the Celtics will need a strong game from their reserves.  They will definitely miss Smart's 10.1 points and 3.6 rebounds  and the remaining players will need a next man up mentality to win this game.

On the Road - The Celtics are playing their 3rd straight game on the road  and have to deal with a different time zone and a hostile arena and playing the reigning champions.  The Celtics are the 3rd youngest team in the league and young players often struggle with focus on the road.  Hopefully they can dig down deep and block out all the distractions of the road and play well enough to get a win.

Do we know if Horford is playing? Without Smart and if we are without Horford then we would have no reason to win therefore I expect a win just like against the Clippers.

He practiced without restrictions so he'll play i guess.

The bigger question is will we win?
I want to see the same aggression from Rozier and Tatum just like the Clipper game..Rozier is somewhat fast becoming the median of this team..if he plays bad then forget about even having a chance even if KI gets 40 we lose if T.Ro doesn't deliver his usual 14 points and a whole lot of hustle.

Love the Warriors movie reference. I did that on my son’s baseball team in a pre-game huddle against a team named the Warriors.  We said that about 4-5 Times getting louder each time. Only one guy in the stand seemed to get it.

i'm pretty sure we lose this in a blow out.

I think we take an early 10 pt. lead, they come back to lead by 20 or so going into the 4th, we come back to lose by 8 or 10.

Kyrie is unreal. Terrific to see.

However, the concerns remain the same. What do we do when he isnt in the game? And what happens when our field goal percentage falls back down to earth. What happens when we get into the bench?

Terrific start, but Im worried. Wont shoot like this all night.

Kyrie is unreal. Terrific to see.

However, the concerns remain the same. What do we do when he isnt in the game? And what happens when our field goal percentage falls back down to earth. What happens when we get into the bench?

Terrific start, but Im worried. Wont shoot like this all night.

yup they are waitng for us to go cold ,  then Curry and Durrant will rain threes and we get buried

Brown off to great start and with all other starters on bench, we have 3 plays  in a row where he stands in corner and doesn't move or touch the ball.

Jaylen is gonna need to play like a superstar tonight to get a win.

Luckily he's done that so far. His defense will be absolutely crucial. Need to find away to keep him out of foul trouble. This second quarter will be really important in that regard.

If they shoot 47%? They have a chance.

Better yet Durant gets the flu at halftime and can't play.

What is Stevens record against the Warriors? Close to .500 anyways.

Question is can this defense keep it up. I fear Durant goes off this half.

he does usually in the 4th ...puts pedal to metal.....its going to be up to Horford to stop him or we can't win.

GS lucky they got KD or they would not be nearly as unbeatable.

That's been the theme all year long. Hopefully the starters build up enough of a lead to keep the bench in it.

Smart is a lot better than Rozier on defense.  Smart is one of the best defenders in the league at the guard spot.  Terry Rozier isn't near that.

I know some can't believe it, but he also can pass and would help us there a lot.  He also has had some good shooting games lately.  He is missed.

An overlooked component of Smart is how vocal he is on defense. He constantly calls out when to switch, when to stay home, etc. There have been plays where GSW capitalized on lapses that I think wouldn’t have happened with Smart out on the floor. The difference might be 6 points (or 2 less 3 pointers) and that’s big in a tight game.

Celtics NEED to start off well this quarter.

They haven't done that the last two quarters.

Curry with 18 points in the 3rd.  I know we can always play better def, but when there are so many options on off, it is hard to just leave your man completely to get a hand in Curry's face just so he can still hit the shot.

Impossible no win defensive situation.  If you try to deny curry the ball, welp you still have Durant, Thompson, Green.

Solving the Warriors is above my paygrade.

Still don't miss Smart. Curry is the greatest 3-point shooter of all time, if he's on he's on. Nobody on earth is gonna stop that.

This is just crazy talk, especially after what Smart has done on these types of offensive superstars in his career (remember Harden earlier this season?).

Sure, but I'm still not convinced. Rozier is no slouch on defense. It's easy to say "No Smart = Curry lighting it up", but are we forgetting what Curry does to defensive superstars too?

Rozier has certainly improved defensively, but he still can't hold Smart's jockstrap defensively.

And, the Currys and Hardens of the world are Smart's absolute specialty, because they're not super quick or athletic. They get past their defenders with their crafty ballhandling, fakes/moves, and quick first step, which plays very well into Smart's elite BBIQ defensively. He reads perimeter defenders as well as any defender that I've seen, and his added size, length, and physicality is something that he provides above and beyond this.

Smart is a lot better than Rozier on defense.  Smart is one of the best defenders in the league at the guard spot.  Terry Rozier isn't near that.

I know some can't believe it, but he also can pass and would help us there a lot.  He also has had some good shooting games lately.  He is missed.

If you think so, that's cool. I can understand if it was some scrub killin the C's but this is the greatest shooter in history. You just gotta live with that, and make someone else kill you.

Exactly. That's why Wall torched him last playoffs but shutdown Beal. Plus Smart's ability to fight through screens is what makes him really good against Curry.

Those 3 important possessions in a row, Brown who has been our second best offensive player tonite is relegated to standing in corner with hands on knees. Need more ball movement and cutting there. Those possessions were horrible and killed momentum.

So our lost against the GSW in the last few seasons are:

- 2 OTs without Smart
- Blowout home court loss without Horford
- Nail biter without Smart

Yep. Not worried against the warriors. They are beatable as long as we can reach the finals.

Honestly I thought overall the refs were actually alright for this game.

C's just had a cold stretch in the 4th where they could have pulled ahead and away honestly, and then Curry came back lol.

NO DOUBT! i do not hate GS at all. I hate any team lebron plays for. Let's just make sure the cavs are taken out this year.

Well, at least this game was promising after our recent poor streak. However, it's still frustrating that we have a player sitting at home who could've very well been the difference in this game. Curry doesn't go off like this on Smart, yet he couldn't play due to a dumb decision.

So angry with this game. 2 huge possessions that stood out in my mind:

1. Horford’s missed bunny off a great pass by Kyrie
2. Tatum getting absolutely mugged at the rim and no foul called

Oh well. We took one of their best hits and still almost pulled it out. Curry had to go nuclear for us to lose.

Man, I don’t see how some Celtics fans are so shook by Golden State. Give me Hayward and Smart and we can take them. Heck, just Smart alone and Curry doesn’t go off like he did and Celts prob take this one.

But as good as Golden State is, they are unwatchable with all the complaining they do. I mean replays show CLEAR fouls that they are arguing about. They are the biggest divas I’ve ever seen on a basketball court. Between their showboating and constant whining, I don’t see how anyone besides Bay natives and band wagoners can stomach them.

These type of games got loads and loads of details and usually it bolis down to one or two possesions... Pitty Al missed that defensive play when Steph made that layup giving them +5. He stayed to long behind Iggy...

yeah winning and losing this game tonight comes down to just a few possessions and each teams margin was razor thin.  We didn't take care of the ball well at times, and missed a lot of Ft's in the 2nd half and didn't get much from Tatum.  I almost feel like giving Tatum a break from the starting lineup might help.

Take care of the ball just a bit better, and hit the fts and we walk away with a win.  Great effort by the C's though.  Brown with a quiet 20, but was a good compliment to KI tonight.

Good game.  Curry was spectacular in the second half.

We've had some unexpected success against them in the last few years, but the fact is that we don't have the firepower to take them on in a seven-game series.  We only have one guy who we can ask to go get us 20+ every night.  They have three.  I know our defense is great when we're locked in, but that's just a huge mountain to overcome.

We have help coming next year.  Hayward will return, hopefully at 100%.  Brown and Tatum will be another year better.  But this year, we are who we are.

Insert Hayward and Smart in this game instead of Ojeleye and Larkin. Wow.

Fun fact about tonight: The last time the Celtics lost to the Warriors in Oracle, the starting lineup was Avery Bradley, Evan Turner, Jared Sullinger, Jae Crowder, and Brandon Bass.

Why does that feel so long ago?

I saw many uncalled fouls, especially the left handed shot by Kyrie where he was clearly fouled with no call. I would say the biggest reason we lost tonight was Tatum. He played timid and passed up all the shots on the pass and decided to dribble into trouble and lose the ball. He played like a rookie and should have reduced his minutes in lieu of Morris or Rozier. Well played game by just about everyone EXCEPT Tatum and a few NON-CALLS. On to Denver. BTW, Marcus picture punching Smart we could have used you tonight. BTW MJohnnyboy you cannot complain about Larkin's play.

Not putting the sole blame on him, but I also think Tatum's struggles really hurt us.

He shot 2-9, and missed some wide open shots in the 4th quarter as well.

But obviously he's young and hitting the rookie wall now, so I'm not concerned and still think he will have an extremely bright future.

Also, am I the only one who gets frustrated seeing Morris just jack up a lazy looking bad shot (especially a long 2 or a 3 while covered) acting like he's Curry... seemed like he did that quite a bit tonight as well. Shot 5-15 tonight.

I would rather have him take the shot rather than be indecisive and then try to dribble into traffic and lose the ball. I am generally happy with Morris shot results as he has kept us in some games by making shots.

Yeah I’m not mad about Morris taking shots because in the 2nd unit, we barely score as is. His iso isn’t the problem. It’s the whole unit being offensively poor that’s the problem.

I’m not a fan of Morris’ team defense though. Individually, on-ball, he’s solid. It’s when he needs to help where it’s a problem.

I don't believe in the rookie wall.  I just think Tatum is in a slump and he's passing up shots as a result.  He's also starting to draw help on his drives to the basket and he hasn't developed the strength or experience to deal with that effectively yet.

As for Morris, he's always been a midrange iso player.  That's his identity.  He's the only guy on this team who can consistently create his shot when Kyrie needs a breather, though.  These are his shots.  He needs to hit more of them than he did tonight.

Is it crazy to think about moving Tatum to the bench until he breaks through his rookie wall?  Jason would probably have an easier time playing against 2nd team players and Morris wouldn't have to do as much playing with the starters.  I dunno, it just feels like we might need to reduce Jason's minutes and get him over this poor spell.

I think Tyreke is the guy too. Memphis is in tank mode now with Conley going down for the season. We may be able to get him without using the DPE. You can send Yabu + the 2019 MEM 1st, then save the DPE for buyout season (Hi Greg Monroe). That would be my angle.

Imagine having someone like a Lou Williams coming off the bench for this team. That'd be huge for us, and I would think he's fairly attainable via the DPE and LAC pick, too.

I don't think he will be available. Clippers in playoff hunt and Pelicans could drop a bit in standings too.

I think Tyreke Evans is the ideal target but idk what it would take to get him.

I think Tyreke is the guy too. Memphis is in tank mode now with Conley going down for the season. We may be able to get him without using the DPE. You can send Yabu + the 2019 MEM 1st, then save the DPE for buyout season (Hi Greg Monroe). That would be my angle.

That Memphis first is protected the next few years right? Unprotected in 2021? That feels like an eternity from now but there’s probably a halfway decent chance that pick is really nice by that point.

If Smart wasn't injured I'd seriously consider assigning Tatum to the G-League for a game or 2, just to give him a boost of confidence and get out of the funk he's in.

You think demoting him would RAISE his confidence?

He's already proven that he belongs here.  Just let him work it out.

Its not a demotion. It works for baseball players, why not for the NBA? Even in other competitions, some players in slumps perform better when they play against lower competition and dominate.

Of course I'm not saying this is the right course of action, and that it will most likely happen, but it can work. Give him a free reign like Donovan Mitchell has and get more reps.

I agree with Atzar. NBA is different than MLB, I think sending him to the G-League would hurt his confidence. The best course is to let him play through the bumps at this point.

I agree with letting Jayson play through the bumps but when it's obvious he doesn't have it or lost his courage in big games then just don't play him as much.

I also think that he should play it through, but sometimes winning comes first, and if he plays bad, he gets less minutes and doesnt get the chance to get out of his funk. In turn his confidence takes a dive anyway. That's why it made me consider just let him dominate G-League and maybe he gets confident. It worked for AB, it could work for Tatum.

Not saying its what I would do, but its a consideration if I was in charge. (of course I am not, so relax)

Nah, that pick could be golden.

Any chance the Lakers trades Clarkson to us for couple of 2nd rounders?  ;D

The G league that’s crazy?

The bench, maybe. But even that I’m not convinced. I think a minutes reduction would definitely help him though

I’d rather not trade a 1st rounder for Tyreke, especially since I don’t know how well he’d fit with the team, defensively. On offense, another playmaker who can finish at the rim would be terrific off the bench, but can he communicate on D?

Absolutely not, that pick coould be really good. Maybe our pick, or the cipper pick which is lottery protected or a second

Me too, but the way things have been going lately—playing down to lesser teams—I'm doubtful it'll happen.

I don't think the Warriors ever for a moment thought the outcome was in doubt. A series might be a 5 game gentleman's sweep.

Hard to see how that would be the case, given we were up by 10 points before a couple of absolutely brutal stretches by our bench - highlighted by us scoring 36 points in the second and third quarter combined.

You can draw a direct line to the recent 1-4 slump and Tatum's struggles.

I definitely disagree with your first sentiment, but not with the second. I've never been more confident in our ability to beat them, but it doesn't mean we'd be favorites.

Their flex half-court offense was not working. When we slowed down their game, they were forced into pick-and-roll heaves. Granted, Curry is the best at those, but there are even tweaks we could do to get them off the 3 point line there.

That's the second game in a row that our wings have held Thompson and Durant in check. I don't think we can stop them, but it does seem like we have a beat on what they are trying to do -- and we are making them uncomfortable when they are doing it.

After that, the only player in the NBA who can go toe-to-toe with Curry is Irving.

Plus not having Smart and throwing him at Curry hurt us. While Rozier is better on the offensive side of the ball, Smart makes it easier to switch on D. KD got Rozier a couple times and it was too easy for him.

This is why Hayward was so important. As good as Tatum is, rookies have a tendency to be inconsistent at times.

Either way, you have to be encouraged that it looks like the celtics are right there with the warriors. I think we are a year away. You add hayward, and another year of development for Brown/tatum we match up very well

It's true that so much of our current success depends on youth not acting young. In a year, we are plus experience and Haywood. Maybe it just comes together, hopefully before Horford experiences any age related dive in performance.

Next year, with an MLE addition as well and possible ring chasers, plus our internal improvement through experience and health, and maybe we can threaten the Warriors. Not sure anyone else will have the depth for sure.

I just watched the last quarter of the Warriors game replay on NBA TV.

One thing I noticed was Tatum had zero shots the last 8 minutes, and DNP the last 5 minutes (except for a few seconds at the end). Irving kept them in the game with some miracle layups.

How can your best shooter not take any shots in such a close game? The answer is he was not set up to take any shots. When he got the ball, he was moving and passed it off to others. He was never in a position to shoot--from a screen, for example.

If you want to look for problems with the Celtics offense, one place is Tatum. He has the best shooting % stats on the team, and isn't getting set up for enough shots. Especially those corner 3 pointers.

The game last night ended in a shootout between Irving and Curry. That's not the traditional Celtics way.

Did you actually watch the game? He had several shot opportunities and he passed them up, indecisive and timid and after given the opportunity and he passed it up he tried to make up for it and tried to drive into traffic and ultimately losing the ball.  He should have sat much earlier in this game because he didn't have it. You could tell he was actually afraid to shoot.

Not to mention the 3 three pointers he took in the 2nd half weren't even close to going down. He was playing lousy on the offensive end.

Impressed with the team's performance last night.

Tatum didnt have it. Marcus wasnt there. Team still fought really hard and were right there to the end. Steph went Nuclear down the stretch. Didnt miss in the last 2 and a half minutes scoring 13 of GS's 14 points (I think).

It would have been nice to have Marcus and I think the D on Steph left a lot to be desired, but at some point you just have to tip your cap to the greatest shooter ever.
