What did you guys like about Kornet last year?

26 garbage time points spread across 12 games, in which he didn't make a 3PT and only blocked two shots.

It's not fair to judge anybody off of garbage time.  Well, I guess unless you're asking "if this guy is any good, why is he only playing in garbage time?"  But, looking at that production, and from what I remember last year, I'm not sure why people would be encouraged or think that there's improvement.

I think he has regressed during his time as a Celtic. His shooting drop-off has been painful. Since 2019, 46/172 from deep in 82 games

When I watched him I didn't judge based on production. I looked at him more like I would someone in the Summer League or college.

Good shooting form. Shows ability to shoot threes. Decent screener. Excellent length and size. Okay lateral movement. Not afraid to guard outside. Very good closeout on three's. Good rebounder. Generally in the right position on defense.

Seems to have a upside as a bench big. But sadly, he's 27 years old.

If he can make a little leap, great. If not, dump him. But I saw enough to give him a shot to show what he can do. Still would love to pick up someone like Nerlens Noel or Kelly Olynyk if they get bought out. I am less loving bringing in any of the headache vet bigs that could mess up a locker room that might be a bit fragile after the Udoka situation.

Kelly would be a really good fit.

I am not stoked either way about Kornet, but I would be happy if we found a way to snag Kelly O back.
As a bench player he would be pretty great for this team.  He isn't a def stopper, but he isn't horrible at Def either.
He can shoot the 3, is unselfish, a good passer.  If we shipped out Kornet and some other random player in the 10-15 range of our lineup (or a 2nd round pick) and got KO it would be great for us.  We need veterans off the bench who can contribute.  We need quality role players.  If KO could give close to his career average in points / rebounds 10/5 in 20-22 min a game it would solve a lot of problems.

But...do you think DA is interested in doing us a solid at this point?
I honestly don't know.

I don't believe we have the matching salaries to get Kelly. I think Kornet is a better defender than Kelly.
I'm totally fine with Kornet as the 4th or 5th big on the roster but right now I think he's 2nd.

Ok, gotcha, thanks.  We def don't right now.  But if we wanted to wait, could we trade Gallinari + other small contracts once Gallinari is tradeable is that even possible?  I guess I doubt that Utah is going to waive KO.  They could def get something for him in a trade, and DA doesn't leave low hanging fruit.  KO is probably a pipe dream anyways.  His salary is twice DG's...

Gallo can go in a few months. I'm not sure how many players Utah has under contract. I thought too many.

Utah has three more players under guaranteed contracts than they can keep.  I don’t think we’ll be able to work out a very good deal with them even to aggregate for KO in a few months because they’d have to drop players to fit, likely two because it would be Gallo+2 minimum salaries.  Maybe at the deadline if they send out more than they give to another team, or there’s a third team with an open spot who can be paid to help.  But the best chance for Olynyk to return is that he himself is a roster space casualty at some point, which I think is possible but not probable.

It's unlikely but Danny might do us a solid. ;)

So, hindsight being what it is...  If we had offered the better of our 2023 HOU / POR second rounders, would Detroit have traded us KO when we still had the TPE?

Kornet is horrendous.

KO returning would be a great add but it seems like Utah wanted him. Bojan is worth more than the return Utah got so I would think they’d keep KO.

Yep. I don't even know if we would have had to do that much.  If money was really no object like Wyc said, I have no idea why they didn't use the dang thing.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I don’t think they would have.  They had the tax space and want to be more competitive this year, which is why they went for Bogs on the cheap.  A $12 million TPE was less useful to them than KO’s largely expiring salary that could take back $17 million on its own and more in aggregation.

This is why they still haven’t cut Kemba, also.  They’re hopeful to use his salary in a trade.

Or maybe they just don't like what they see in Olynyk. Tho I would've been fine getting him back.
