MEM currently with the 7th worst record. Pick is top 6 protected. It will be close. Really finishing right in the 5-8 range is the best outcome, either the pick conveys at the best position it can (7th or 8th), or the Grizz keep their pick but get the worst pick they can this year (5th/6th in a mediocre draft) and the C's get it next year..

Keep eye on N’Faly Dante of Oregon. Raw but great upside at the 5.  Nearly 7’ tall, 7’5” wing span, very fluid and developing a decent shooting touch. Maybe future tandem with Time Lord at the 5.

We have to think long term. Our two Js have a lot of great years ahead of them. Just getting started.

Thoughts on Isaac Okoro? His defence is spectacular for a wing, he might be a Celtics target for doubling down on small ball
Jaylen Brown for All-NBA

Mem is at 11th worst, but only 2 games out of the playoffs. This year’s west isn’t as strong as last year’s.

If the Grizzlies really want this year’s pick they need to consider trading some of their vets like JV and Crowder.

The bottom of the heap is getting a little more crowded recently.  Even as the Grizzlies have been winning some games so have the Cavs, Knicks, Warriors, and Pelicans meanwhile the Suns and Wolves are both 1-9 in their last 10 games and the Grizzlies have caught up to the Kings, Spurs, Bulls, and Pistons.

Wins
6 Hawks
8 Knicks
9 Warriors
9 Pelicans
9 Cavs
9 Wizards
11 Suns
11 Wolves
12 Grizzlies
12 Kings
12 Spurs
12 Pistons
12 Bulls
13 Hornets

Only 4 wins separate 12 teams currently.  The schedule will get brutal for the Grizzlies in February, and it will still be a little tough in March and April.  The schedule seems a little soft in January so hopefully they remain within striking distance of the bottom after this month.

I really like this Memphis team too. Jackson-Clarke are going to be a menacing front court on the defensive end for years to come, and they compliment each others games very nicely. Then you have Morant who has shown incredible poise and ability in his first season, and may have a higher ceiling than anyone in the 2019 draft class. If they can put some shooters around this young core then they will be a problem for years to come.

They shut down Jaren Jackson in mid-February last year

wouldn’t be surprising if they take the shutdown route with Morant

Win totals as of 1/2/2020

Grizzlies: 13
Suns: 13
Bulls: 13
Hornets: 13
Timberwolves: 12
Kings: 12
Pistons: 12
Pelicans: 11
Cavs: 10
Wizards: 10
Knicks: 10
Warriors: 9
Hawks: 7

That's 12 teams with fewer--or the same amount of--wins.  :o :(

For folks who watch more NBA games than I do: Which teams could feasibly pass Memphis by the end of the year? Things aren't looking good right now! Although I know it's a long season.

My unprofessional assessment of who could possibly end the year better than Memphis from that group...

Grizzlies: 13
Suns: 13
Bulls: 13
Hornets: 13
Timberwolves: 12
Kings: 12
Pistons: 12
Pelicans: 11

Cavs: 10
Wizards: 10
Knicks: 10
Warriors: 9
Hawks: 7

With Zion's return I think the Pelicans will barely beat them out (they just won 5 straight even without Zion!).

The Pistons, Kings, and Timberwolves have more talent than Memphis and should eek out enough wins to overtake them.

The Cavs, Wizards, Knicks, and Hawks just stink.  And they're eye-balling a top three pick.

I still think the Warriors could generate a few extra wins once Curry returns, but it may not be enough time for them to catch Memphis.

Per this, the best-case scenario is Memphis ends up with the sixth-worst record.  But statistically not all seven of those teams I have catching them will actually accomplish that feat.

So my prediction is they end up with the 8th-worst record and we that don't want the pick to convey yet will have to pray for Memphis to get good fortune with the ping-pong balls.

Grizzlies just pasted the Clippers in LA.

Clips were without PG13 and didn’t bring a lot of defensive intensity, so a lot of this is on them. But Memphis did a lot of things that probably will translate on other nights. The team was committed to movement and making the extra pass for a great shot. Over 30 assists this afternoon. Guys with okay looks at a three passing to a wide open team mate. Morant was as advertised - getting where he wanted, great change of pace and vision to pass, terrific touch on his floater or at the rim. Valanciunas can get buckets; was so different seeing him and Montrezl Harrell banging into each other - major collisions.
