Title: Expectations for Jaylen Brown
Post by: Bostoncelticsforlife7 on October 18, 2017, 02:14:51 AM
I'm assuming Brown will be the full time 3 (or 2 if Tatum starts with Morris) and will probably get around 32 minutes a a game. I am a huge believer in Brad Stevens and still think our ceiling is the 3rd maybe 2nd seed with Kyrie, Horford, and Brown.

Brown had a great game tonight and showed a lot of confidence. He has been consistently aggressive through out the preseason, but I'm not fully sold of Jaylen being our 2nd leading scorer this season just because I remember what happened during summer league and I know
Jaylen always plays well verses the Cavs.

But with that being said I am going out on a limb and say Brown should be able to average 15-16 points per game, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. It's a lot to ask for for a soon to be 21 year old sophomore on a playoff team, but I think Brown is very capable. I mean after all, someones besides Kyrie has to score. We need him to take the next step now and be a decent second or third option on offense. It that too much to ask from Brown at this point of his career?

Jaylen seems mature for his age and I hope this maturity carries over to his game. With GH being out for maybe the whole season, Jaylen has the chance to really break out. Jaylen and Tatum should more or less take over Hayward's production.

Yeah, I think he's been doing a good job of being aggressive but at the same time in control on offense. Hopefully he can stay that way and not lose his confidence when things dont go his way like he did in preseason

He should be able to do a credible impersonation of Bradley if Brad doesn't run him into the ground. I'm not sure that the 20-year-old version of Brown that's 2 years removed from high school ball is able to handle 40 minutes a game for any sort of sustained stretch of time.

Just develop as a cutter, straight line driver, and spot up shooter while playing solid D with starter minutes.

He has a ton of talent but I don't think I'd want him to try and playmake too much and I don't think he's a shot off the screens/curl guy yet.

well, with having to take some of Hayward's minutes now, I think we're going to experience a bit of an up and down season from him until he gets consistency with his shot and defense.

my reasonable expectation by the end of the season is more consistency in his game to game performance.

Just want him to improve on D. It is worrisome he don't know how to play strong on D. Hopefully that will change. For offense I see him as a slasher because his shot not there yet.

I loved how Jaylen ripped LeBron's shirt in half last night. Jaylen's either a circus strong man or that is one cheap shirt or LeBron is wearing a breakaway....

I've really been impressed with Brown since the preseason.  His ceiling as a scorer looks much higher than I anticipated.  He seems to find himself open quite a bit, he is always in the action on a fast break, he creates shots from steals and off the dribble taking it to the hoop.  After the summer league I saw no reason to think Brown would be a high scorer, but he looks pretty awesome to me right now.  I'm very excited with his progress.  I'm now guessing he'll be better than a guy like Derozan within a couple years.  If he learns to maintain his concentration and finishes a couple extra dunks/bunnies that he misses per game, he'll score even more on better efficiency.

Same here, but unfortunately I think that his poor ballhandling will limit how much he can actually score once teams figure out they have to pay attention to him.

Ya here is my deal with that. Most of us felt the same way about Brown but after one game we're changing our tunes? Brown looked really good last night and if that's the guy we're getting on most nights this season I'll eat a big plate of crow.

He was up for this game let's see if that continues.

I would be over the moon with excitement if Jaylen continues to get 20+ shots per game.  I felt like he should have been force fed 10+ shots last year.  If he had, he would have developed at least one go-to move that he could have used in the playoffs.  That would have been huge.

But if he gets 20+ shots this year, look the he|| out.  He will learn very quickly what his limitations are, what the refs will call, and how defenses will game plan for him.  He will make The Leap for real by mid season.

One thing that didn't get mentioned too much in the reactions I've read today, was that our defensive rebounding was vastly improved last night.  This allowed for many more transition/slashing opportunities for Jaylen (forcing 17 TOs contributed to this too).  And his teammates were very willing to advance the ball ahead to him.  If that continues, youngblood will absolutely feast.  He will be a legitimate weapon.

I agree. He doesn't seem to rattle easily against pressure and taunting and physicality. Honestly, while I know there's a lot to be said for fire and passion, I got sick of seeing that from guys like Jae Crowder and Marcus Smart (Jae especially). Good to see cool heads prevail, and frankly, nothing ticks off an opponent than ignoring the jabber and just playing the game.

One other thing I liked about last night was his pacing. Yes, he flies down the court on fast breaks and all that. But with the ball in his hands he was patient and didn't get way out of control as often as he seemed last season.

On that point - Jayson Tatum has that patience and pace already. Really impressed with his poise.

If Celtics do anything much , Brown and Tatum gonna have to grown up very fast .

I like their mental tuffness and high IQ .   I just hope their bodies are ready for this . Tatum is probably still growing.

Jaylen went toe to toe with Lebron last night and almost matched him. I was very impressed, his ceiling is higher than I first thought

People put way too much stop in summer league. It starts only about what, 6 weeks after the end of the season? How much improvement do people expect to see in that time frame for second year players? Even the preseason has been proven time and time again to tell us almost nothing about the regular season. Systems aren't in place, players aren't always going 100%, players are asked to play outside their expected roles.

Now, on Brown. I've been big fan since the moment he was drafted. If you are picking at #3 go with the guy with the most upside, and I thought brown was that guy. His combination of size and athleticism is hard to find, and honestly it looks like he's gotten both bigger and taller since the draft. How far he goes is gonna depend on how his skills develop. He has to improve his defensive technique, particular in the post where he doesn't always play with the size he has (I think he's better on perimeter guys). He needs to continue to gain defensive awareness, but I think that will come naturally with reps. Don't forget he only got like 17 mins a game last year and only had a short run against starters. I disagree somewhat about his lack of a handle, I think its lose and that leads to turnovers but his general explosiveness combined with some decent moves (spin, eurostep, a developing crossover) allows him to get to the hoop where he's' actually a pretty decent finisher. needs to tighten that handle but even with I where it is it's obvious he can get into the paint which gives him some upside as a scorer. If his three point shot comes along than he could score 20+ a night just with three and attacking off close outs + transition. He's never gonna be a point guard like passer, buts he's not selfish and can make the obvious pass and when he's been given ball handling opportunities in off/pree season he's dropped a couple nice dimes so I don't think he'll be a negative as a passer. So really, I don't see any HUGE deficine or areas where you say "He's hopeless," it depends on what skills he improves and how much they improve. I think he has the right attitude and a strong work ethic and I hope he meets his potential because I see some leadership ability there.

For this season all I want is for him to be aggressive. Go at the hoop hard, improve your shooting, bring energy, work on your defense. That it, show you are improving. There's no free agent to lure this offseason, and with GH done likely no chance of beating Cleveland (I think we still make the second round, but TOR/WAS/MIL would be a tough win). Its not always gonna be pretty, Brown is gonna be asked to do more than we can reasonably expect and that leads to ugly play sometimes, but I'm optimistic.

I said since the preseason started.  I'm not changing my tune based on one game.  He has shown a pattern of improved play since last year and this summer.

I want to see Jaylen stop going for stupid fakes. Bron had him jumping all over the place. He just needs to be smarter on defense and keep his base, stop falling for every little move.

I wish his handles were better but eventually I suspect it will get better.

Yeah, I loved his activity level though. His D will improve with more action against real NBA players.

As for his handles, I suspect that will improve, as well, but I am a little more concerned with the 23 fga and 0 assists. I mean, other than Kyrie and maybe Tatum, there is nobody else I really want to see taking shots, but that is the kind of thing that rubs teammates the wrong way.

Interesting to see Jeff Green last night...

...I am confident that Jaylen Brown will bring it night after night. He is ambitious. He works hard. He has a prototypical NBA body and athleticism. He D'ed up LeBron last night with satisfying aplomb.

I think we are not going to know who he is until he is a little older, and more mentally mature. He's just, what, 20?

But we have  a lot to like with his effort. This is NOT Jeff Green. This is a kid with heart, work ethic, and great athleticism.

So far, he seems very bright.

Agreed, although I thing it looks worse come from a dude like Melo who plays no D than from a dude like Jaylen Brown who is hustling and defending and playing his tail off all the time.
