Game Notes
This is the 4th and final meeting between these two teams this season.  The Celtics got their first win of the season on October 20 against the Sixers, winning 102-92.  That began the Celtics 16 game win streak.  The Celtics also won 108-97 on November 30.  They played one week ago in London with the Celtics coming back from 22 points down to win 114-103.   These two teams also met twice in the preseason with the Celtics coming out on top in both games.

The Celtics are coming off an overtime loss to the Pelicans after winning 7 straight and are 8-2 in their last 10 games.  They are 18-6 at home.  The Sixers are coming off a win over the Raptors (Thank you Philly), and are 6-4 in their last 10 games.  They are 10-10 on the road.  The Celtics are looking for a sweep of the season (and preseason) while the Sixers would love to get a win in the final game between them.

In the Sixers win over the Raptors, JJ Redick bumped knees with someone and has a bone edema and a cortical crack and will be out of this game.  I'm guessing that Jerryd Bayless will start in his place.  Markelle Fultz is still out and may be trying to fix his broken shot now that his shoulder is pretty much healed.  Back up center Richaun Holmes is out with gastroenteritis and Furkan Korkmaz is out with a foot injury.

The Celtics may be short handed as well with Abdel Nader was out for Tuesday's game with an illness (presumably the flu) and now Marcus Smart, and Guerschon Yabusele missed practice with an illness and all three are questionable for this game.  Word is that Tommy Heinsohn is also out with the flu.  Along with that trio,  Kyrie Irving reported shoulder soreness after Tuesday's loss to the Pelicans and is also listed as questionable for this game.  I'm guessing that, especially with Kyrie, they will be cautious if he still has any soreness at all.

With Marcus Smart and Kyrie Irving both questionable, I'm not sure who will start.  I've included Kyrie as the starting point guard, but it's possible that Smart, or if he is out Rozier or Larkin may start at the point.  I'm going to say that Baynes will start at center since Brad went with him as starting center in last week's game in London.

Key Matchups
(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/202681.png)  vs  (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1627732.png)
Kyrie Irving vs Ben Simmons
The 6'10"Simmons will have a distinct height advantage on any point guard the Celtics start.  Simmons is averaging 16.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.0 blocks. He is shooting 51.3% from the field and has not shot a 3 pointer this season.  He is shooting just 55.6% from the free throw line and has been the subject of "hack a Ben" strategy from time to time this season.    He had 16 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists in last week's game in London.  He didn't get to the free throw line in that game. If neither Kyrie or Marcus can play,  either Rozier or Larkin may get the start at the point unless Brad goes completely out of the box to start someone else there.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/201143.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/203954.png)
Al Horford vs Joel Embiid
Joel Embiid will also have a height advantage on Al Horford and Horford will also have an experience advantage on Embiid.  Embiid is averaging 23.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 blocks per game.  He will definitely be a tough cover for any of the Celtics who try to stay with him and limit his effectiveness, however, the Celtics have done a good job in the 3 games so far and hopefully will continue that in this game.

Honorable Mention
 Jason Tatum vs Dario Saric
Saric has played very well against the Celtics this season.  He finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds the last time these two teams met in Boston.  He is averaging 13.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists this season for the Sixers.  The Celtics' rookie needs to play defense on him to make him work for his points and he also has to play well on the offensive end to make him work on the other end as well.  With Redick out, Saric may take on a bigger role in the offense.

Keys to the Game
Defense -  Defense wins games and the Celtics have been winning with their defense.  The Celtics have the best defense in the league with a defensive rating of 99.7.  The Sixers aren't exactly slouches on the defensive end with a defensive rating of 103.3, which is 6th in the league.    Defense wins games and the Celtics need every player to make defense a priority.  The Celtics gave up 118 points to the Pelicans and they can't afford to get lax on defense against the Sixers or they will end up with their second loss in a row.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team and go after all the loose balls, and aggressively go after rebounds, and be aggressive on defense. They also have to be aggressive in taking the ball into the paint.  The more aggressive team will usually get the benefit of the whistles.  The Celtics need to be the hardest working and toughest team on the court.  We know that the Sixers will be aggressive and play hard and the Celtics need to match their effort.

No Hero Ball - The Celtics play best when they move the ball and find the open man.  When they dribble too much and when each player tries to do too much, the offense stalls and it throws off every other area of their game.  We saw this against the Pelicans.  Too much  hero ball and not enough team.  They need to get back to playing team ball.  The Celtics need to also be careful with their passes as the Sixers are 6th in the league with 8.5 steals per game and they average 16.5 point off turnovers per game.   If the Celtics get careless, the Sixers will make them pay.

Rebound - The Celtics need to crash the boards as they can't score if they don't have the ball.  The Sixers are first in the league with 47.6 rebounds per game while the Celtics are 8th with 44.7 rebounds per game.  The Sixers are 7th with 13.8 second chance points and 8th with 47.1 points in the paint.  The Celtics have to work very hard to beat the Sixers to rebounds to avoid giving them extra points on second chance baskets.

Play the Right Way - Against the Pelicans, the Celtics played way too much hero ball.  The ball didn't move like it usually does.  They didn't play team defense like they should.  They shot 50 (yes FIFTY) three pointers and made just 19 of them.  They were outscored in the paint 50-30.  The Celtics need to rely less on the outside shot and get to the paint more.  They need to move the ball and play as a team on both ends of the court.

X-Factors
Depth - The Celtics depth will be tested in this one if all of the questionable players are unable to play.  The Sixers depth will also be tested somewhat with their starting shooting guard and backup center both expected to be out.  Whose reserves will give their team the boost that they will need.

Home Game - Both teams played in London and both teams have played one game since returning so they are both even there.  The Celtics have the home court advantage and they need to feed off the energy from the crowd.  Young teams like the Sixers sometimes struggle on the road and hopefully that will be the case in this game.

Its not like we lose quite often this season.

But yeah, less L on the column would be nice.

Exactly. We're 8-2 for the last 10 games. And just had a 6 or 7 game win streak beaten by AD who put up 40+ and Rondo who's becoming the Celtics killer. LOL

If we double our lose record we will still end up 60-22....I'll take that missing one of our main players for the season.

No JJ tonight which is good because he seems to always torch the Cs and because the Sixers don't have anyone else who can be a reliable threat from 3.

Cavs have Magic tonight and should throttle them. But they have the Thunder and Spurs on the docket after that.

Lol. Used to be the same way many years ago but if the 2004 Red Sox, Game 5 in 2008 against the Lakers, and generally the Pats have taught me anything, is a win is always within reach until the game is over. The Power of Positivity😄

The game started earlier than usual.  Usually nationally televised games start 7-9 minutes after the scheduled time.

Tatum might have one of the most effective inside-out dribbles I've seen.

That foul right there stinks. Should be a no call but the offense will usually get the call just by creating contact.

Yeah, I was fully expecting at least a 7:10 start (which is typical for non-national games these days, too). I am glad I tuned in 'on-time'.

Anyway, going to need a big night from the young guys without Kyrie. I sure hope they can step up!!

Jaylen pouts a little bit when he doesn't get calls.  I'd like to see him break that habit.

It is frustrating but he needs to play through it....

There is ZERO reason to play close to Simmons on D.  He might be an even worse shooter than MKG.

Agree.  Any jumpshot he takes is a shot I can live with.

Jaylen definitely got hit on that 2nd shot at the rim. The first would have been nice, but he made a great move to get to his left hand. If he can consistently make that shot, he will be impossible to guard.

I haven't looked at the stats, but I feel like he has improved a lot as a finisher this season after a rocky start where it seemed like he bricked a dunk every game.  So I'd expect him to make a healthy number of those looks.

They're playing tight defense and it looks like no one on the floor knows how to counter that.

we have some serious group tentativeness right now.  we need to start playing smart and aggressive.

Is Brown hurt? I just don't see any other reason to keep him out so long or let Nader in the game.

He played the entire first quarter and didn't play very well.  Not injured as far as I know, but getting a prolonged rest.  Brad probably micromanaging his minutes too.

The Cs offense is so bad it is making my eyes bleed, but credit also goes to the Sixers. Not only are they being aggressive on our passers (leading to a record amount of TOs), they are making it so I have no confidence in any shot we take. Seriously, every shot looks like a bad one!

Hopefully Brad can get the team into the proper rotations coming out of half-time and calm the young guys down. This is just embarrassing!  :o

Yes he did.  If you slide your feet and keep your torso in front of the man without using your hands/arms to help it's 100% perfect defense.  Again, it's called "legal guarding position."

That said team needs to up their game, no Kyrie but no ball movement or driving that I've seen, standing jump shots suck

How is that not a block by Covington?  He was still moving.   Reggie Miller is a giant idiot.

You can move your feet and maintain legal guarding position.

And Covington didn't do that.  It was a blocking foul.  Tatum didn't do enough to earn a charge, such as lowering his shoulder.

Yes he did.  If you slide your feet and keep your torso in front of the man without using your hands/arms to help it's 100% perfect defense.  Again, it's called "legal guarding position."

Guess we'll agree to disagree.  I'd wager in most instances that type of play would go down as a blocking foul.

Tatum needs to learn how to take over.

He's not ready yet.  People on this forum go on and on about how he's being held back, doesn't get enough chances to dribble.  He's just not there yet.

Put in the bench and sit everyone else. This game is over.

39 point with 4 minutes left in the 3rd. Offense is a real problem

Nobody is playing well.  Al not stepping up with Kyrie out, only 1 rebound and overall uncharacteristically poor defense.  Easy to see why we're getting stomped so far.

They're not the (sole) reason we're losing, but it's still annoying to see absolutely no consistency out of them. They're calling crap on one end that they're not calling on the other, as is the case with those crap charge fouls.

Philly are fun to watch when they have things going.
Embiid's showboating is kinda annoying, tbh.
I guess. I just find it funny, I don't find it in too poor taste. At least he's clearly the best player on either team. It annoys me when guys like Stephenson do it.

McConnell is finally doing something in a game against us and Terry is having a rare awful game. And people actually think this is the norm?  McConnell would AT BEST be our 5th guard.  He's basically Larkin getting more minutes.  Nothing more to see here.

Rare? lol Terry has been terrible for the last several games after a high streak.

And I would probably take McConnell over Rozier as a backup guard. Rozier is a better scorer, but McConnell is probably better pretty much everywhere else, along with having a BBIQ that isn't fifth grade level, too.

That play before the break was indicative of guys that just aren't used to playing with each other.  Larkin drives and hits Rozier on the cut... but Marcus Morris was cutting into the same space at the same time, which prevented what would have been an easy layup.

No shortcut for fixing that.  Just need more practices and more reps together.

lol man you have some very generous views of Rozier as a player.  If you aren't bringing anything to the table off the dribble or passing as a guard, you better be scoring, not having games were you are awful and on the season shoot below 40% from the field.  He has more poor games than that.

He's at the game.  Actual LOL at the fact that you are in a sudden panic over this.

I knew I would hear a few comments about this question, though lots of regular members here have their own little obsessions with this team (Roy & Terry Rozier)

Kyrie leaving early and then not attending the subsequent home game when he had the facial injury was not a good look for me. This is an important issue because this group thrived on chemistry last year and much of that chemistry was traded and Kyrie is not exactly famous for being a great teammate. He seems to have put some effort towards that this year, but I'm afraid his basic nature is that of a self-centered person and that ain't what the Celtics are about.

So, you say he is at the game......................exactly where is he, cause I don't see him over there in the bench area anywhere ??

Both have seen the ball and done little with it.  These guys are seeing the ball.

I am hopefully they can tweak things to get more back screens and stuff but these guys are in and getting the ball tonight and didn't get it done.

Tatum has fumbled or lost the ball a number of times here.

You're making a huge deal out of nothing. He could be watching from training room/locker room area as KG frequently did when he was here and missed games. I mean, Gordon has the boot off. Why aren't you freaking out about him not sitting on the bench?

Jo Jo White is also not at the game.

As I remember, KG was on the bench the entire playoff when he was hurt in 2009 - he was on his feet and cheering at every opportunity. KG is the one responsible for changing the culture of that group when he got here in '07. I also remember KG flying cross-country in the middle of the off-season to be at Shaq's introductory press conference in 2011.

I do not understand why the ball is not going into the hands of people who can actually score.

Honestly: what are you talking about?  Who is not getting the ball that you think should?  Everyone is seeing it and not making aggressive moves, not getting open, not back cutting.  No one is being froze out.
Tatum/Morris etc. People who can actually create their own shot

Tatum has been gun shy..they'd give him the ball...he passes back to Smarrt who in turn bricks it.
This is where the coach should say something except it looks like brad has been sleeping this game.

He's at the game.  Actual LOL at the fact that you are in a sudden panic over this.

I knew I would take a few smart alec comments from my question, though lots of regular members here have their own little obsessions with this team (Roy & Terry Rozier, Half the Board & Marcus Smart).

So...........

Where was this urgency a long long long time ago?

I think all of those comebacks have spoiled these Celtics and made them think they can "turn it on" and win games by just playing halves at a time.

I think when your two best players aren't playing you will struggle.

Amen
We might want to dial down the angst a little bit.  We're having a bad game while missing our top two offensive options.
It happens.

Eh, this has been the case most of the year even with Kyrie playing.

While I applaud this effort, you can't sleepwalk through 45 minutes and expect to beat an NBA team in the last 3.  It doesn't work like that.

It's crazy that we were a few bricked threes from being in a very interesting game right now, but realistically we don't deserve to be this close.

Just ticks me off that we have seemingly not put together a full game with this type of effort this season. There's a clear correlation between our defensive energy and how well we play. When we don't play with energy defensively we just aren't the same team.

All night in 15 minutes of action?  He's one of the very best post defenders in the NBA this year.  Embiid is legitimately unstoppable by a singleteam when he gets going.  Regardless he went off when Baynes wasn't in and Baynes has again played 15 minutes to Embiid's 35.  Not sure I am blaming a guy who played less than half his minutes.

The last 2 games have been 2 of the worst losses of the season. Not so much the losing part but the effort. They look listless.

Better hope Kyrie is not out for several games.

I'd say the blowout loss against Chicago was the worst.  Otherwise I agree - these past two games have been horrible to watch.

Celtics could be playing a sophisticated game of possum trying to rope-a-dope. Only behind by 11.

Chicago was bad. But sometimes you have clunkers. Just disappointing is all, especially after the poor game vs NOP.

Terrible. Yes, we were missing Kyrie, but the effort and smart play were just not there all night long. We have to be better than that. Brad has to figure out how to get this team to play more consistent for 48 minutes.

Okay, I find Embiid annoying, but that denial of Rihanna now that he's an All-Star was epic lol

I guess you can't win them all...

Yup.  On to the next.  Although if we lose to Orlando then we have some real reason for concern.
I agree. Stevens has to get these guys out to better starts and figure out that 2nd quarter.

same with baynes he doesn't provide anyrhing..

Clearly one of the best post defenders in the league doesn't provide anything?
He's clearly getting abused in the post by embiid all night..

Glad that MANY on this board think that we do NOT need a big!!:-))))))))))

Looking for 20+ from Tatum.  While it ain't happening, a cameo from Fultz would be entertaining.

Well done once again, loser.

McConnell is powning Rozier now  ::)

And yet again.

Rozier's D is as consistent as his streaky shooting.
It's consistently bad that's for sure.. he plays zero on ball defense, it's actually kind of pathetic given his athleticism.. I'm just pretty much done with rozier at this point, same with baynes he doesn't provide anyrhing..

Wait what?  Baynes hasn't been good at all this game, but overall he's been great for us this year.
I disagree. Unless we are playing a drummond/jordan/Adams type player he's pretty useless on defense. Can't stay with anyone outside of 5 feet and is pretty awful in the pick and roll game especially when he switches onto the quicker guys. Offensively I thought he had a pretty knockdown midrange shot but he hasn't been as effective with it lately and recently has dabbled with a 3 pointer for some reason

I'm all for a big and bench scorer before deadline. Can't depend on smart and rozier for bench scoring every night. We are in dire need of that iso type scorer off the bench who can create their own shot. To be honest Larkin is pretty decent at creating his shot off the bench. Might be time to give him a bigger role with the second unit

Defensive Rating for every player in the NBA with at least 15 mpg and 10 games played, Baynes is tied for second at 94.9 and tops on the team.

https://stats.nba.com/players/defense/?sort=DEF_RATING&dir=-1&CF=MIN*GE*15:GP*GE*10&Season=2017-18&SeasonType=Regular%20Season (https://stats.nba.com/players/defense/?sort=DEF_RATING&dir=-1&CF=MIN*GE*15:GP*GE*10&Season=2017-18&SeasonType=Regular%20Season)

Probably means he's bad, right?  The man he's tied with has only played 11 games as well.

If you pick Baynes out as some sort of problem, especially on defense, I don't know what you've been watching all year.  He isn't a perimeter defender but he holds down the paint and that is valuable.

I get people being upset after this game but the targets being chosen to criticize I don't get.
