It's very strange having meaningful games against the Rays in July.  You could easily say that this series is the most meaningful in the franchise's lame history.  They've definitely stepped up in the first two games and are in shape for a sweep that would put them up 3 1/2 games on the Sox. A part of me is actually OK with losing to the Rays, because it's neat to see the genesis of a competitor.  Brawling aside, it's good to see some fresh competition in the form of the former Devil Dogs.

It's July and I'm pretty confident in the Sox ability to do what they need to do over the long haul. The only problem with throwing a dog a bone is that it might growl when you try to take it back.

Are the Rays in it for the stretch?
Yup

I think it's funny how after they dropped 'devil' from the name they started to win.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
Devil Rays = 9 last place finishes out of 10 seasons (the other being a 4th place finish)

Rays = first place on July 2.

Clearly, the Devil was holding them back.

Losing to the Rays could actually help the Sox in the long run.

We have just been coasting through the regular season with the Yanks not doing well and not giving us someone to compete against.

Good going for the Rays.

I know they've only had these few recent moments in the sun in the entire history of the franchise, but I'm already starting to hate them, starting with Maddon.

I didn't realize we had gotten swept by the Rays before...so now we got swept twice by them.

Maybe they are the beast of the AL East this year.

As long as the Sox can keep it close until Papi gets back, they should be fine assuming everyone else's health holds up.  Given the fact that Papi, Lowell, and Dice-K have all missed time, I'm fairly happy where they are.

Not just this year. They've got an ace in the wings ( David Price )

Kazmir

Price

Shields

Garza

is a pretty nasty top 4. If the Yanks sign Sabathia in the offseason we could be looking at the top 3 teams in the league coming out of the AL East.

They didn't drop it entirely:

Still, I know what you mean.
But it's not like their identity
was worse than the New Jersey Devils  :)

I think this one stood out:

Yeah, I know, there's purple and gold
in that logo. I liked it anyway!

They changed the entire meaning of their team name as well...from the nickname of the manta ray, to 'Rays', as in rays of hope, or sunshine.

Just figured that one out the other day...guess I missed the memo.
