Game Notes
After a 3-0 home stand, the Celtics travel to Toronto to take on the Raptors who are 2-0 on their own current home stand.  This is the 2nd of 4 games between these two teams this season.  They will meet again in Toronto on April 4 and in Boston on March 31.

The Celtics have won 4 straight and are 5-5 in their last 10 games.  They are 18-7 on the road.  The Raptors have won 2 straight and are 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The Raptors are a league best 21-4 at home.  It's a tough task to go into the Air Canada Centre and get a win.  The 4 teams who have won in Toronto are Washington, Miami, Golden State, and Utah.

The Celtics still lead the Eastern Conference but the Toronto Raptors are right there with them, just 2 games back of the Celtics.  That makes this game very important for the standings.  A Celtics win would put them up 3 games on the Raptors, but a loss would give them a very precarious 1 game lead.

Kyrie Irving missed the past 2 games with a quad bruise.  According to Brad Stevens, Kyrie had a good practice and traveled with the team to Toronto and although his is listed as questionable, there is a good chance he may play.   Marcus Morris missed the last  game with a hip injury but also traveled with the team and is also listed as questionable.

Marcus Smart (hand), Shane Larkin (knee) and Gordon Hayward (ankle) are all out.  The Celtics have agreed to a deal with Greg Monroe and he has arrived in Boston for his physical, however he has not yet been signed.  Danny is delaying the signing to give the team flexibility leading up to Thursday's trade deadline.   The Raptors have no injuries reported.

Key Matchups
(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Brown_Jaylen_bos17.jpg) vs (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/DeRozan_DeMar_tor17.jpg)
Jaylen Brown vs DeMar DeRozan
DeRozan is the Raptors best player and he is averaging 24.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.  He is also shooting 47.1% from beyond the arc.   Jaylen will need to play lock down defense to keep DeMar from having a big game.

(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Irving_Kyrie_bos17.jpg) vs (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Lowry_Kyle_tor14.jpg)
Kyrie Irving vs Kyle Lowry
Lowry has given the Celtics problems in the past and so they need to pay particular attention to slowing him down.  He is averaging 16.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.2 steals.  I'm going to use some wishful thinking and hope that Kyrie is back for this one as they will need his offense and to be as close to full strength as they possibly can be.

Honorable Mention
Celtics Bench vs Raptors Bench
The Raptors' bench has the 3rd best net rating behind only Golden State and Houston.  They outscore their opponents by an average of 6.3 points per 100 possessions.  When Siakam and Poeltl are together in the 4th quarter the Raptors have a +13.9 net rating and allow just 90.1 points per 100 possessions.  The Raptors' reserves average 50.1 points per game.  The Celtics reserves must play tough defense along with contributing to the offense if the Celtics want to get a win.

Keys to the Game
Defense

Defense has always been and always will be the key to winning.   The Celtics have the best defensive rating in the league at 99.9.  The Raptors are 3rd with a defensive rating of 103.1.  They need to play particularly tough defense against the Raptors since they are averaging 112.7 points per game at home and are capable of putting up a lot of points in a hurry.   The Celtics will miss Marcus Smart's defense but the rest of the team must step up and play tough team defense.

Be Aggressive
The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to be aggressive on defense, in going after loose balls, in crashing the boards,  and just all around going all out. They have to aggressively attack the basket. They need to start the game with that aggressive attitude and be aggressive through the whole game with no let up.   Dwayne Casey has said that the Raptors want to step up and match or surpass the Celtics' aggressiveness and physicality and if so,  the Celtics have to work harder to be the more aggressive team.

Rebound

The Celtics must crash the boards. They can't score if they don't have the ball. Much of rebounding is effort and desire. The Celtics have to be the team that puts out more effort from every player to go after rebounds.   The Celtics are 9th in rebounds at 44.5 per game.  The Raptors are 15th with 43.5 per game.  The Celtics have to crash the boards and beat the Raptors to the rebounds if they want to get a win.

Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics have been coming out of the gates slowly and letting teams get a lead.  They have been able to come back and get a win against a lot of teams,  but if they give the Raptors a big lead, they will have a tougher time coming back.  They need to start strong and play hard right up until the final buzzer.

X-Factors
On the Road - The Celtics are on the road once again and playing in an arena where it is very difficult to get a win.  With the Raptors having the NBA's best home record, the Celtics have to come in focused and play their best in order to get a win.  The young players especially have to stay focused and ignore all of the distractions that come with playing on the road.

Next Man Up - The Celtics have been finding ways to win even without key players.  They may or may not get Marcus Morris and Kyrie Irving back but whether they do or not, they will still be missing some key players and so the players who are available must step up and fill in for the players who are out.

Motivation - There is a lot of motivation for both teams. First and foremost, the Celtics are just 2 games up on the Raptors and a win would cut that to 1 game.  With the Raptors playing well recently, they would be very close taking over first place from the Celtics.  The Raptors also have the added motivation of wanting to avenge the 1 point loss in the first game between these two teams.  The Celtics need to be motivated to keep them from getting that revenge.

12th man, two-way player.

Battle for the top seed in the East and the leading candidates to represent the East in the Finals.  No other teams in the East have a shot.  None.  I just had to say that, it's been a long time.

Glad to have Kyrie and Morris back.  Hoping the time away maybe makes some guys be able to step up more when they get the ball and also stand around less and watch Kyrie.  We need more than just two guys to make plays.

That floater Jaylen tweaked his ankle off of was a big time shot by him.  He can be an All Star taking and making those type of shots.  Those kind of shots, combined with range and ability to get to the rim, make you unguardable.

well it isn't just on the bigs, Kyrie needs to do better finding Lowry and make it harder on him too.

Yeah with his quickness he is going to be able to get that shot literally anytime...
a floater is going to make it easier for him to get to the rim when he wants to

Like I mentioned the other night, sometimes it seems like Tatum is just guessing on his finishes when he is that off lol.  Trying to do his leaner I guess through defenders.  He needs to work on a legit left.  You can't always reach around guys in the NBA.

Yeah, they're not going to keep bombing away and hitting threes like this all game. I'm fairly certain this happened last game in Boston, too, and they cooled off considerably in the second half.

For the most part they're just hitting tough shots over us. I believe they're something like 25th in three point shooting; they'll cool off.

lol fair enough, TP.  Just seeing I suggested I think it's pretty probable they can (likely to me unless the Celtics switch something up or all their young guys are more consistent) a few times around here and been scoffed at by some.  I really like their roster this year up and down it.

If our young guys don't step up I think they may say the same about us in the Playoffs.  Our offense is already pretty bad in the regular season before defense steps up in the postseason.

They are more than DeRozan and Lowry.  They are a deep team this year.

Pathetic effort and decision-making all around this half. Terrible rotation decisions by Brad, and we're clearly getting outhustled out there.

But seriously, is Kyrie injured, or did Brad really not play him down the stretch? Like there has to be some sort of justification for that decision given how terrible we looked offensively.

I mean, it was just a thigh bruise, and he had three games off with it. It's not like it's something that he'd be really risking. Plus, there's no report or anything suggesting that he's injured or anything.

It seems like Brad legitimately just didn't play him down the stretch in favor of Rozier, which is... baffling, especially given how bad Rozier was down the stretch and how bad our offense has been.

Naw, not from me. I think Al is pretty clearly the most important cog on our team, and at least his defense tonight has been pretty good.

But still, as a leader on a younger team this kind of lack of aggression isn't justifiable. It's not like he's simply missing shots, he's not even looking for his shots. He simply has to be more aggressive, especially since we apparently are only playing Kyrie half the game for some unknown reason now.

Horford needs to be aggressive, if he's forcing the defense to contest, he's opening up so much space for shooters. You can't ignore how clutch he has been. Defenses need to key in early during crunch time.

LOL Cavaliers blew the lead. Up 67-51 at halftime, and 81-81 right now. Magic have scored 30 points this quarter and there's still 3 minutes left in the 3rd.

Cavs finish is 4th..Toronto can have the number one seed

Al Horford this half: 0/2, 0 pts, 3 reb.

Yeah, he's been pretty nonexistent. He's got to step up on nights like this.

Incoming bump from the 'Horford doesn't deserve his contract' thread after the game?

Naw, not from me. I think Al is pretty clearly the most important cog on our team, and at least his defense tonight has been pretty good.

But still, as a leader on a younger team this kind of lack of aggression isn't justifiable. It's not like he's simply missing shots, he's not even looking for his shots. He simply has to be more aggressive, especially since we apparently are only playing Kyrie half the game for some unknown reason now.

Oh I know not from you specifically, but there's always factions of the blog who have outsized opinions on certain players.

Al is the stabilizing force of our team.  But [dang] he's gotta step up this game.

Not really sure what happened to you, Tar, but you sure have changed ever since the IT trade. It's like the trade personally victimized you and changed your personality.

Ya Lowry especially has gotten flack for being a non-factor in the playoffs. The bigger the stage, the smaller he gets it looks like.

So, Kyrie is starting, meaning Brad simply limited his minutes in the first half. While Kyrie's D was bad, I'm not sure that justified keeping him on the bench with what it did to our offense.

You're right but straight up Baynes has missed a lot of dunks where the ball is in the rim at some point or just near it.  Other guys like Monroe would be finishing.  He is great near the rim, on top of being a great post scorer.

Sure, and I agree with that. But they literally always check hits/elbows to the face/head anymore, regardless if there was something called. The fact that they just simply pick and choose what to do now shows how inconsistent/subjective the officiating standard is.

Disappointed in how many turnovers, Jaylen commuted tonight. We seemed to rush the pace and make inconclusive decisions. No energy.. no fire...

We really need a spark off the bench. Someone who can create or score buckets. If our defense isn't working, our offense isn't gonna make that up.

C's also had trouble scoring against their defense. Smart's defense for some reason HAS to come with his offense, so the outcome likely would've been the same.

Hawks have the Griz by 25

Granted the 76ers scored more in the first half than the C's have yet, but we got time.

Boy, Nader is challenging Semi's crown for futility tonight.

We just clearly didn't come prepared to play. It certainly doesn't help that we are short Smart and Monroe, but it's probably tough to get past Toronto without another scoring threat like Evans or Williams.

EDIT: Hopefully this shows Danny that we truly do need some extra scoring help. This simply won't cut it.

How could we not be up for this game ?

First game against a top contender since loss @ Golden State. You say "Statement Game" ? How is this not a statement game for us ?

Celts need more offense to compete for a title. Hayward will get us much closer, but we probably need a 3-point killer at two-guard off the bench plus a big-time post rebounder/defender.

But how could we not be up for this game ?

Well, luckily our next game is after the trade deadline, so we'll probably have Monroe starting (or at least playing) next game.

I've about had my fill of Baynes. Good defender, but he's too much of a liability offensively, which we need more of right now.

TP, Shaq....this exactly.

Add to that the fact that we came off a VERY emotional win AND that we won 4 in a row without 3 of our top 7 guys, playing balls to the walls, and we were spent and Morris looked like a POS (hopefully from the injury/layoff) and we were ripe for a letdown.

This will be the highlight of the Raps season. Screw them.

This game should be rapidly forgotten but one thing is certain, Brad needs to figure out that 2nd quarter. We cannot enter every 3rd quarter with a deficit after crapping the bed in the 2nd. It's too much.

Disgusting game. How many rebounds did we lose from guys just taking them away or we would fight over the rebound with our own teammate and knock it out of bounds. We need a consistent shot maker of the bench. Tatum played weak tonight. Hopefully he gets back to the aggressive Jayson next game. BTW, do we have anyone to guard Lowry? Oh yeah he was guarding the picture frame instead.

We know we have Monroe.  To the level he is being glossed over by a lot in these discussions, I think people are going to be surprised how good he can be here.

Dwayne Casey was really high on him here for his passing, which I have thought to a degree but he was very confident on how he spoke of it.  Casey is a smart coach I think.

His post scoring will be big when they need offense at times and he is a better finisher around the rim than any big we have.  I love Baynes for defense but he blows finishes off great feeds from Kyrie and others that would be easy finishes for a player like Monroe.

If he's a threat to score and can pass, he adds another big wrinkle into an offense when he's in that can be exploited.  He will draw double teams.

Maybe Kyrie had a minute restriction. Maybe is quad still isn't 100%. Better to play too few minutes than too many when just coming off an injury

Contusion is a broad/vague term.  That he already missed three games and was listed as questionable tonight should be evidence enough that this was not your garden-variety bruise and that he might not yet be back at full strength.  Hope he’s back Thursday for purely selfish reasons (I’ll be at the game).

CBS was outcoached last night... no two ways about it

Also where are the timeout calls?  What is he waiting for....very frustrating sometimes to watch

Also

Al Horford- Another garbage game.

Jaylen Brown - Very Careless with the ball.

Terry Rozier - Very very careless with the ball.

Celts bench - Got embarrassed by the raptors bench. Danny needs to trade for Evans or make another creative move to bring in a legit scorer off the bench

I view last night as more of a positive reflection on Toronto than anything else.  This is easily the deepest group they have had in the Casey, Lowry, Derozan era.  It's difficult to takeaway anything significant as far the Celtics are concerned.  There was zero urgency and/or decisiveness on the offensive.  This has been an issue at various points throughout the season.  The problem last night is that we went against a team that can capitalize on our mistakes.  We weren't ready to get punched in the mouth and the Raptors treated this like a playoff game from start to finish.
