I don't really like no modern players, but maybe make the league entry post 2010 so anyone still playing would be entering their 13th year and thus is past their prime.  Plus no top 75 players.  That would eliminate guys whose careers are still being formed like Jokic, but allows guys like Kevin Love whose career is mostly done.

Made a rough draft board for myself under the mentioned rules, and I underestimated how many really good players would be available. Got to a little over 60 players, and that's without going for a deeper dive into hidden gems.

Also looking over the top 75, it's laughable that Lillard got on over other players who I believe deserve in much more.

Was that list with or without current players?

I just looked it up, and 302 players in league history have made multiple all-star games.  443 have made at least one.

My concern would be having enough talent to sustain really good rosters 1 through 10 (or 1 through 12, however many rounds there are).  If there are 12 GMs and 12 rounds, that's 144 players, so it seems like everybody will have a shot at 12 all-stars if they want them.

That said, if we cut out top-75 *and* current players, that seemingly would cut the player pool down significantly?  I'd at least push Moranis' proposed deadline up, and say nobody drafted after 2015.

I think there’s plenty of talent - my current spreadsheet has approx 180 players, with no top 75 nor current NBA guys. There are some obviously lesser players, but numerous MVP types

Yeah, that's without current players, no top 75, and post-ABA merger. And that was from a surface level observation on players, a deeper dive could easily yield a draft board twice as big.

I'm ambivalent regarding current players, but I would need to take a closer look to see how many players would "slip through the cracks" compared to the spirit of the rules.

I'm fairly confident in the strength of the group without incorporating more current players. There's obviously a heap of All-NBA, All-Star types. Plus defensive specialists, shooting champions and assist/rebound leaders. I like the idea of getting a few bona fide superstars, a few multi-time All-Stars, and then some more fringe guys. Makes it a more complicated task

So far we have 11 people down for historical, and a couple more if it's a contemporary draft (which I think we could do at a later stage). Do we want to start thinking of potential draft dates?

A couple of people are in on the provision that the draft is held in August, but beyond that I am flexible too :)

I've been vaguely planning a very rough schedule of things - how does the below look to everybody?

Weekend 15-16 July: random team assignment (unless people have preferences, like Kernewek).

Weekend 22-23 July: draft lottery.

Round 1: 2 August
Round 2: 3 August
Round 3: 4 August
- Weekend break -
Round 4: 7 August
Round 5: 8 August
Rounds 6 & 7: 9 August
Rounds 8 & 9: 10 August
Rounds 10 & 11: 11 August
- Weekend break -
Binkie round 12: 14 August

Then spend approx. 1 week shaping our teams via trades, getting our philosophies right and written down, and voting starting over the weekend.

Brilliant! As per usual, will be using a random number generator for the allocation of teams and drafting slots

The schedule looks great! Has there been any decision as to what the parameters are? I personally would have a very difficult time evaluating guys I wasn’t alive to watch pre 90s (and there’s really limited data and analysis on some of the older guys) but I understand that may not be the consensus opinion.

I think we were broadly in agreement for post-merger (76-77) all the way up to guys who have just retired, so no current players. Also, excluding top 75 players.

So there should still be a good 30-year window of guys for you. Also, IMO some of the most talented guys in this draft are 90s-00s guys overshadowed by some of their counterparts.

To be clear can we draft someone who started before the merger but was still in the league after it. So a if guy like Kareem wasn't a top 75 player could we draft him?  And if so, how should we account for someone like that? Do we only account for the post-merger seasons in our analysis of the player? Another top 75 that really represents this issue is Havlicek.  He played a couple of seasons post-merger, but no one would draft him based on those couple of seasons.  Just looking for clarity
