Title: Rio 2016 Olympics
Post by: LatterDayCelticsfan on July 25, 2016, 03:01:06 AM
Looks like tjis Olympiad is trying to be the most controversial, problematic, and otherwise hard to enjoy in the history of the games.

Doping, Zika, Social unrest, plus the looming risk of the games being targetted by terrorists.

don't forget the ever-increasing commercialization of the event itself

Brazil should never have been allowed to have a FIFA World Cup and Olympics within 2 years of each other.

New Zealand already had an athlete kidnapped at gun point by the "Military Police" and forced to withdraw cash from an ATM.

There is raw sewerage being pumped directly into the sailing venue.

Australia won't even allow their athletes to stay in the Olympic Village.

Clearly Rio is not ready to host

Rio aside for the life of me I cant understand why as a country we do not push to regionally host the olympics. Where Boston floated the idea of hosting and logic one out to the logistical nightmare that would have been why not have the entire north east host?

Other countries spread out the stadiums and events. Why not do the same thing here. Use Boston, NYC, and Phili has the three main citys and spread the events out to those areas.

Probably tradition.

Also its abit of a let down that after WADA's hard work on doping on the IAAf seem s to have the cahunas to lay down the law of doping cheats. (Ok them and FINA) Its one thing to find out afterwards the competition was cheating, but going into the event know that the people you are contesting medals with have been cheating and no one has the guts to throw them out UGH!

Hopefully they are using the same stadiums

I read before that pretty much every olympics loses money for the country
Even with increased tourism from the event it still isn't enough to make a profit

Not surprised with the kind of tax exemptions and monopolies that IOC and its partners squeezes out of host countries.

Not to mention the usual increase of tourism just might not be there. There is a number of athletes who won't go because of fear of Zika and crime. Not sure how many spectators will want to go.
Kind of interested to see how ticket sales are going.
