I'd like to add Robin Lopez and Eric Gordon to our bench.

Christian Wood, Wendell Carter, Otto Porter, Josh Richardson. Beyond those 4 guys, anyone that’s a defensive wing that can shoot 3’s or however close to an Al Horford replacement we can get.

PG: Deron Williams 07-08 / M.R. Richardson 80-81 / J. Wall 16-17

Christian Wood fits our TPE at $14.3M next season.  I would probably give up Nesmith for Wood.  He is a late bloomer and has had some durability issues so there is risk.  Last season he was 18 pts/10 rebs, 39% from 3 on a bad team.  Hard to gauge how that would translate on a good team.  I have not seem him actually play much, I am only going off stats and perception but if he really is what he appears to be, he would be a good target.

Gordon does not fit the TPE.  Spotrac has him at $19.6M so I see no pathway to get him, at least with a TPE.  And I don't see how we could ever match salaries.  Bench scoring is a need but can't see how we get Gordon.

Gordon fits the TPE if he’s traded for before July 1st when his extension kicks in.  His cap number is under the TPE through June 30th.  That said, Denver has made a lot comments recently that they expect to be a tax team next year, so I doubt Gordon is getting moved.

Oops, my mistake.  I guess my insatiable desire to use the TPE son Aaron Gordon has shone through again, even though I realize it’s not happening.

OK, I think you mean Aaron Gordon, PF on the Denver Nuggets.  I thought the suggestion was Eric Gordon, SG on the Houston Rockets.  Both are $19M+ for 2022-23 so would not fit our TPE if the trade is in the off season (so officially in the 2022-23 season).

Eric Gordon is expiring so easier to swallow that contract but even in 2021-22, he is just over the TPE, right?  Aaron Gordon is signed through 2025-26 at more than I think he is worth so I really have no interest in Aaron Gordon.

But is there really a possibility still to make a trade for Aaron Gordon and have it be based on his 2021-22 salary?

Yeah, I realized you meant Eric Gordon.

As for Aaron Gordon, yes, he counts at this year’s salary through June 30th.  It’s not happening, but it would be permissible if it did.

I think Gordon would fit pretty well into the role the Celtics could give him.  Probably overpaid, but if we’re talking about using a $17 million TPE on someone who’s coming off the bench, then pretty much any proposal is going to wind up with someone who’s a little overpaid or underutilized.

With Aaron Gordon though, if he did work out for the Celtics, there is a starting role waiting for him when Al Horford retires after winning his second title in a row.    ;)

In any case though, I would expect Aaron Gordon to be given starter minutes even next season as you expect to have to "manage" Horford's minutes.  I am not sure that we would get much more out of Aaron Gordon than we can get of of Grant Williams though.  A. Gordon has always been a tease for me.  Potential is there but I just have never seen it materialize on any consistent basis.

Otto Porter is a FA but if the C's would want him at his price wouldn't it need to be a S&T?  Josh Richardson will be an expiring contract so I double outside of a 2nd rounder the C's would need to give up much to get him back.  He'd be great on the bench and would fit this team perfectly.  For me Otto Porter is the better player and my favorite target.  Richardson would be a good consolation prize.  Neither should cost much outside of the Warriors agreeing to a S&T.  I'd also like Bobby Portis but he will be out of the C's price range.  He'd be great off the bench and would allow the C's to limit Al's minutes.

As for replacing Horford I doubt we will need to worry about that until after next year.  I would love the c's to sign a young replacement.  There really isn't anyone out there that can do half of what he does.  This team needs a 3 & D PF.  I'd say we'd be drafting his replacement but there is no 1st round pick.  Jaylin Williams would be a great young prospect to target if he falls late in the 1st early 2nd.  He needs to develop a 3pt shot but he can guard 2-5 and can pass.  The celticsblog article had a bit on him and nbadraft.net has more.  He's projected to Dallas at 26 after a good combine.

NBA Comparison: Bobby Portis/Elden Campbell
Strengths: A relentless, versatile center who is built for the modern game with his disruptiveness and defensive acumen … Top of the key offensive initiator with great court vision and powerful, accurate passing leading to 2.6 assists per game his sophomore season … High-level athlete who can put the ball on the floor and play mobile on both ends of the floor … Has the potential to expand his range beyond the 3-point line … Boxes out well with the size and length to be a great rebounder … Averaged nearly 10 rebounds per game at Arkansas this season … Extremely smart defender who was the best player in the nation at rotating over and drawing charges … It is an understatement to call him a pesky defender … Defensive versatility is his greatest strength as he can guard just about any player on the floor, allowing his team to switch anything … High motor player who sets the tone defensively and has the stamina to play for long stretches. Averaged nearly 32 minutes per game for the Razorbacks and significantly improved in staying out of foul trouble … Williams fouled nearly five times per 40 minutes as a freshman and reduced this to 3.3 fouls per 40 minutes as a sophomore … Active hands on entry passes … Isn’t afraid to put his body into opponents in the post on both ends … Meets players at the rim as he averaged over a block per game … Creates chaos and turnovers on defense with 54 drawn charges and 48 steals on the season … Showed out against elite big men like Chet Holmgren, Drew Timme and Mark Williams in the NCAA Tournament … Will give you everything he has whenever he is on the floor and simply knows how to win and make players better around him …

Weaknesses: Is comfortable shooting on the perimeter and has the potential to be a capable threat, but that won’t come instantly at the next level and will probably need a few years to get to that point … Extremely hesitant to shoot outside of the paint … Averaged nearly two turnovers per game … It’s reasonable to expect more than a block per game from a player who roamed the paint as much as he did, so we might not see the same shot blocking prowess at the next level with longer and stronger athletes … Won’t put up great scoring numbers during his career, as most teams will solely desire his defensive traits and production … Doesn’t fear contact but could still get a little stronger …

When I've watched Christian Wood, I see a guy with big skills that you want in a modern day big. He also has all the physical assets to be a perfect defensive big addition to this Celtics team.

But his defense is terrible. Not anywhere near good. And his body language and facial expressions while on the bench and his way to and from the bench says he has obvious issues. Stories of him are that he is a bad locker room guy. I read no one in Houston would be sad to see him go and that was the same when he left Detroit.

I am torn on adding a guy with issues but then again, I wouldn't mind being the team that RasheedWallaces Wood, like the Pistons did back in 2004.

If Houston decides they’re done with Wood and the cost was minimal, I’d be okay with seeing if the Celtics could change his attitude/effort for a season before he reaches free agency, because it’s not a big cost to cut bait if it doesn’t work out.  But at the 1st they’ve been reportedly seeking?  No thanks.

Yea, Wood likely doesn't add much because he'd be a highly targetable weak link in the defense while wanting starters minutes and touches in a contract year. They're also likely to get a first of some sort for him.

I also don't see the team spending any significant amount of money bringing in another center to compete with Theis for third-string minutes. If the TPE gets used it'll almost definitely be on a swingman or 3/4 type who can lighten the regular season load on Tatum/Brown and play some playoff minutes.

Also, for the record, the Thompson TPE was used on Theis. Fournier one is the only one of substance expiring this summer.
