Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/act_rajon_rondo.jpg)vs(http://www.nba.com/media/act_tony_parker.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Tony Parker
When Rondo is aggressive and focused, he can pretty much take on any point guard in the league, including Parker.  Rondo usually gets up for big games and this is a big one.  Hopefully aggressive Rondo shows up for this one.

Brandon Bass vs Tim Duncan
Brandon will have his hands full in this matchup. Duncan still brings a lot to the table, especially defensively.  He is great at getting position for rebounds and tip ins and Bass and the other Celtics bigs need to concentrate on keeping him away from the basket.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Dejuan Blair
I expect KG and Bass to switch on assignments from time to time and so we will see KG on Duncan, at least part of the time.  Duncan is having a very good year so far and the Celtics need to try to slow him down.

Game Notes
The Celtics continue their road trip with a stop in San Antonio to face the ageless Tim Duncan and the Spurs.  The Spurs are a very good home team with a 7-2 record at the AT&T Center.  The Celtics are 4-6 on the road.

The Spurs have lost their last 2 games and so will come out strong  in this one looking to get back on track.  The Celtics are coming off a loss to the Rockets in their first game of the road trip.  They also need to get back on track but in the second of back to back games on the road, it's hard to say if they will have the focus or the energy to do so.

Doc started Courtney Lee against the Rockets and moved Jason Terry back into his 6th man role.   The results of the move weren't all that positive as the Celtics got off to a very slow start.  I'm thinking that Doc may go back to JET in the starting lineup but he may also stick with Lee.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Celtics must make defense a priority in this game.
The Spurs are  a good offensive team, ranking 2nd in the league and averaging 104.8 points per game  The Celtics are 12th in scoring, averaging 98.3 points per game.   Both teams have slipped a bit on defense with the Spurs allowing and 44% FG%.  The Celtics have slipped even more,  allowing teams to shoot 45% against them.  The Celtics must lock down the Spurs on defense because chances are, they won't win a shoot out against them.

Focus - On the road against a team like the Spurs, the Celtics must keep their focus from the opening tip to the final buzzer.   The Spurs are very capable of taking advantage of any lack of focus on the Celtics part.   The Celtics need to put in a strong effort for 48 minutes in spite of playing in a hostile environment.    The Spurs won't let up and neither can the Celtics if they want to win this one.

Rebound
The Spurs are 10th in the league in rebounding with 42.9 rebounds per game.   The Celtics are still last with 38.5 rebounds per game.  Rebounding is all about effort and desire.  The Celtics need to crash the boards as a team and if they put out the effort in this area, it will translate to the rest of their game.   The Spurs will translate rebounds into points and so the Celtics must beat them to the boards.

Be Aggressive  When the Celtics are aggressive in going after loose balls, taking the ball to the hoop and playing in your face defense, they are very tough to beat.    When they get lazy and allow teams to beat them to loose balls and rebounds and when they settle for jumpers and don't go to the basket, they are very beatable.  They must stay aggressive and that starts with Rondo.  Hopefully he comes out aggressively in this game.

Bench Play
-  The second unit must come through for the Celtics.   They need quality minutes from everyone in the second unit.  The Celtics are playing in the second of back to back games on the road and in this situation, bench play is even more important than usual.

X-Factor

On the Road and Fatigue
The Celtics need to keep their focus playing on the road even though it's easy to loose focus in a hostile arena and with the travel and all that goes with it.  Also, playing in the second of back to back games on the road isn't usually a strong point for the Celtics.  Fatigue could be a factor down the stretch.

Kawhi and Jacks are still out.

I think Pierce and Green are again keys to beating this San Antonio team. The Spurs have no wings with enough size/bulk to handle Pierce and/or Green. They have to exploit that. They didn't do enough last time round. They must correct that this time.

I like Jason Terry to start against Gary Neal. No point in using Courtney Lee here. It doesn't gain Boston anything but Terry gives Boston a matchup advantage over Neal.

I also like having Courtney Lee come off the bench to play against Manu Ginobili. C-Lee is Boston's defensive choice against Manu.

Ever since Rondo came. He turned everything around.

Rondo has had some brilliant games against the Spurs. They have been completely unable to handle Rondo's ability to control a game with his non-scoring contributions (rebounding, defense, playmaking).

I'll guess a big game for Rondo and Terry. Solid game from KG and Sully, Pierce struggles, Celtics lose by 4.

these are the type of games our team shows up for and loses in a close battle after playing like garbage against mediocre teams

Splitter and Duncan on the floor at the same time. Interesting.

I hope San Antonio posts Splitter up against Bass. I want to see how good Splitter is creating one-on-one against Bass in the low block.

I don't think Wilcox can defend Tim Duncan. I'd love to see Jason Collins here.

This is a very bad matchup for Boston.

I don't like how slow Jeff Green is in starting his post move.

I also think he needs to fight to get another step deeper before the catch. Starting to far from the rim. Making more work for himself backing down his man. Allowing opposition more time to send help.

I think Diaw is one of the better post defenders Sully has played against lately. Very strong, low center of gravity, tough to move, quick feet, hard to get around. Around the same size as Sully.

I'd like to see Sully get some post ups but I think they'll be easier opportunities to work that into the offense on other nights.

I'd like Doc to go small against Matt Bonner.

Stick Jeff Green on him. None of the Celtics other big men are well suited to defending a perimeter shooter like Bonner but Green can completely neutralize Bonner. Plus, there is no hope in hell Bonner can cover Green on the other end.

That is why Doc took Bass out. Went small for the final 6 and a half minutes.

It gave the team it's best defensive, offensive and overall lineup against the Spurs lineup with Bonner out there. It pulled the lead back from 38-31 to 52-49.

well then the guys need to hold their own Def practices.  because they don't seem to know where they need to be.  Bass has been lost on 3 of the last few possessions.  As a player, you gotta take it on yourself to learn what you need to be doing, and then put out the effort.

I know the spurs are good too....

what you see out of Splitter is what popovich would get out of fab melo.....doc....will get a D league guy..who never plays in the NBA...!

no way... Melo hasn't played organized basketball until he was like 17, at the same age and Thiago was playing for Caja Laboral, a top Euroleague team... I bet Fab can be better than Thiago, who was MVP of the ACB Spanish League before coming to the NBA.

But I understand your frustration on Doc's rookie management... more Sully please!

Why does it seem that every single team has 3 point shooting contests against us?

Between these announcers and our bad play, this is getting unwatchable.

Bass and green are also starting to p--- me off, i didnt expect much from them but they are disappointing me.

The Celtics' offense is the antithesis of the Spurs'.  The Spurs move the ball, anyone brings up the ball, they get quickly into the sets, the ball doesn't stick.  They play organized random offense.  The Celtics are slow and repetitive and grinding.

People always talk about guys running with Rondo, forgetting that he never passes the ball up ahead so it's moot most of the time but how about Rondo running with his teammates without the ball?  Why can't he use his speed to bust it on the wing and be a threat there from time to time?  He doesn't always have to control the middle of the floor.  The passing angles from the side on a fastbreak are actually even better.

The Celtics were inching closer. Another basket there and things really would have tightened up. Tony Parker follows up with 5 quick points to put them back up 11. That wide-open missed Terry three would have cut the lead to 3 points. Make or miss league.

This game shows that we aren't even in the discussion as a contender.  Spurs were tired, not playing their best for about 3/4 of the game.  We played horrible D and really let the spurs catch fire at the end of the game.  We were lazy on O, not getting to the rim enough, settling for way too many jump shots.  When they stopped falling, and parker caught fire we were cooked.

This was a really winnable game.  I guess on the 2nd night of a back to back we have that built in excuse.  But we are really what our record says we are right now.  Barely a playoff team.  I am really tired of watching our D.  I can't wait until it gets better.

Doc is determined to play small and be the worst rebounding team in the league. Looks like Sully got punished for crashing the boards tonight.

Danny save this team. Please trade Bass, Lee, and a first rounder for a 7 footer.

When is Doc going to get some criticism for how much the Celtics are underperforming?  Maybe they're not contenders, absolutely they're not contenders right now but they should be better than skimming .500.  I don't think he's made any adjustments in three or four years.  The offensive sets are exactly the same and he can't rein in Rondo to actually move the ball ahead and around.  He always moans about a lack of ball movement.  Well, he's the coach, can't he figure it out and demand it of Rondo?

How he uses Terry epitomizes how little coaching he does and how much Rondo will not adjust to a new teammate.  The guy slotted him directly into Ray Allen's plays.  It's absurd.  Instead of letting Terry handle the ball more and basically do what he's done for most of his career within the framework of great teams, he just replaced an outgoing Ray exactly.  The bottom third ranked offense Terry was coming into needed no altering at all.  Total sense.

Celtic basketball is headed on a fast train to NO WHERE...

No BIG's ... NO CHAMPIONSHIP hopes.

I just hate Doc's substitution patterns with KG.  If the Celtics had competent defensive bigs behind him, sure, play KG for comically short stints but yanking KG 4.5 minutes into a quarter while the other teams' starters are out doesn't work on paper and hasn't worked on the court.  The Celtics stand a much better chance of surviving without KG if the backup bigs are going up against, you know, backup bigs.  The starting lineup is diluted.

It's been two years of Doc trying to copy Carlisle's rest pattern with Dirk and doing a terrible job of it.  I'm convinced the Celtics would have been a much better regular season team last year and so far this year if Doc just left KG alone.

We are not the worst rebounding team in the league. We get fewer rebounds in total, but we are fourth when it comes to defensive rebounds percentage according to basketball-reference.com. This is not really the problem.
The 7 footer we need is for rim protection, since we allow a lot of points in the paint - 25th in the league according to Teamrankings.com - and it's not mainly fastbreak points (13th in the league).

Well , since we suck and have NO CENTER , no paint presence, maybe DA will grow a pair and make DOC bring FAB back and AT LEAST train him on the NBA court and play next to KG and learn.  So in a few YEARS we can have at least ONE CENTER on a NBA team.

BTW ..COLLINS is totally worthless.

TP.  We've actually been rebounding fairly well since Doc called the team soft.

Our defense allowing too many easy scores - transition buckets, paint points, and wide open 3 pointers - is the problem.  We always seem half a step slow on rotations.  I'm confident that when (I would say "if", but I'm trying to be optimistic) our defense improves, we'll be winning a lot of games.  We've always been at our best when we get multiple consecutive stops throughout the course of the game.

The Celtics are now 2nd worst in the league in rebounding differential per game and are dead last in rebounding percentage differential.

It's deceiving because we completely ignore the offensive boards.  This seems to actually hurt us because it's not like we're playing good transition defense even when we send all 5 guys back.  It's been happening all season and it needs to be fixed.

We're clearly not a good rebounding team, but if we're closing out the defensive rebounds, I'm happy.

Avery coming back, and addition of a shot blocker to the rotation (Melo Maybe) will right the ship.

Whatever the heck happen to ball movement? We're seeing a lot of iso ball, or the ball sticking to Rondo. Guys can't get comfortable when they rarely touch the ball. Another point is it makes defense job easier just load up on one side with the ball; something Celtics were historically great at. Hence, teams move the ball against the Celtics getting C's defense off-balance.

Ball movement killing C's on one end, and is being underutilized on the other end.

I think this hits the nail on the head.  in previous years, not crashing the O boards was frustrating but the D would be set and there'd be no fastbreak buckets by the other team.  This year is completely different in that regard.  The team seems to go for more O boards but when it doesn't so they can get back on D, they still get burned on fastbreak buckets

the lack of whistles didn't help tonight at all. we did attack the rim, got hit hard, but got called for very few fouls. that doesn't excuse some of the rotation issues on defense, but it didn't help any. also...FTs let you set your defense, too. not surprised doc was pretty angry about the FT story. it was an issue, and not because we didn't attack.
