A Tommy Point.

That means you put on a great post/argument or did something that entertained the masses.

Or won one of the games on here (like PAPOUG and its clones, but the others I don't know about).

Or a bet. http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=64272.msg1459587#msg1459587  ;D

Have yet to join one. Would like to some day.

Neither.

Stars mark volume, and nothing more.  Maybe longevity, but that's about it.

TPs are trivial, and while they were originally meant to mark a "hat tip" for good posts, they've morphed into currency in CelticsBlog games, and a fun thing that became way too competitive.  As soon as I heard the first allegations of members creating duplicate accounts to reward themselves and "TP cliques" where people would reward their friends as much as possible in a quid pro quo system, it was pretty apparent that TPs had jumped the proverbial shark.

My advice would be to focus on the quality of a poster's arguments, rather than the number of stars or TPs next to their name.

I think they are both stupid.

Why does everyone have the right to give out Tommy Points? I mean does Donny Marshall or Scal hand them out during games? If they do they are meaningless if not from the man himself (or Gorman, he's earned it). If anything, only mods (assuming one of them must read every post) should hand them out. Winning bets/games and bringing the lolz isn't the same as making an actual basketball-related quality post. Does Tommy hand out actual TP's for flashy dunks? Rename them reps (for reputation) if that's what it's about.

As for stars, equally flawed. Not mentioning any names, but some posters end up in every single thread all day, every day. Maybe you should receive a star based on how long you have been an active poster? If they are supposed to mean something, I'd be more inclined to appreciate posters who have been here for years over guys who post 200 times a day.

Earning a reputation as an astute GM in the various Celticsblog drafts tops both.

Ha.  I was just going to point out how prestigious and life-changing being a winner of the CelticsBlog draft is. ;)

TPs are easily falsified, and can be gained through means that have nothing to do with quality of post count. A low TP:Post ratio can be an indicator of post quality, but it is far from a consistent one.

Posts are easily accumulated, and also do not require quality.

<---see there for examples of both

Neither.

Tommy Points have the same flaw as upvotes in Reddit...  folks who post an unpopular opinion that adds to a discussion will typically get downvoted for not siding with the masses.  I have a tendency to argue the unpopular opinion here... so I don't expect to ever get tommy points.  It's a credit to CB that they eliminated the possibility to give someone a negative tommy point... otherwise I'm pretty certain I'd have a negative amount.

This is a Celtic forum.  Everyone here is conditioned to love the Celtics.  You probably aren't going to get a TP for criticizing Rajon Rondo or suggesting we aren't a contender. It's not surprising that some of the most positive people here have the most tommy points.  "You love the Celtics?  Shucks, me too!... have a Tommy point!"

That and the fact that long-time posters have twice given away all of their Tommy Points in one of Roy's "How much will you wager for a Celtic title?" threads.

They are meaningless... I still give them out, but when I do I usually call it out in the thread... Telling someone, "TP... awesome post!" goes a lot further than the number tally.
