Harden? Didn't they have Bird rights on Harden so could negotiate at any time?

They’re looking into whether the Sixers have an agreement with Harden to give him a big raise next year in exchange for the salary cut he took this year.

If they did, do the Sixers lose five first rounders, Joe Smith style?

NBA is becoming embarrassing in this regard.

Fans and owners alike have been hounding stars for years about being too greedy and selfish. So when Harden takes a huge pay-cut to help his team improve, someone makes a formal complaint to the league office…what a joke.

We are not far removed from recent complaints regarding GSW ownership spending too much into the luxury tax.

You are upset if they get punished 76ers made an illegal deal with harden to circumvent the salary cap?

Harden is a max guy, how are the 76ers going to circumvent the cap if he was adamant on not losing any money?

The only way the NBA will investigate a contract is if another team owner files a grievance. This has nothing to do with ‘cheating’, this is about a salty team being upset the 76ers have improved or taken their free agent target. I would bet money this was Pat Riley being petty about losing P.J Tucker.

It’s like this.  Harden opted out of his contract.  Fine, he’s allowed to.  He worked with the Sixers to take less this year.  Also allowed to.  What he and the Sixers are not allowed to do is agree that they’ll pay him the max next year since he did this.  It doesn’t matter if another team was going to offer him the max or not next summer, because a side deal like this would be a direct circumvention of the CBA, which stipulates a maximum raise of 8% from year 1 to year 2 of a contract, and not the nearly 50% raise he’d get if he signs a max deal next year.

The two sides can agree to talk next year, but they can’t actually agree on a number or even a range of numbers, and that’s what the NBA is investigating.  It could be Miami that complained, it could be Brooklyn that complained (they’re pretty ticked at Harden forcing his way to Philly last February), or it could have been a number of teams that were frustrated, because it’s looked like Harden and Morey have been cooking up some things together for awhile now.

Hah, I wish.  I’d be content for Harden’s deal to be voided and him not given permission to resign with Philly.  Do the Spurs jump out of nowhere to sign him?

Yeah the NBA is literally investigating whether an egregious violation occurred. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t like it if the warriors signed jaylen away for 10 million but warriors ownership promised him a 30 million a year contract with a tech company to make up for the money he was losing. If the NBA finds an email from Morey saying hey you take the 15 million dollar pay cut we will give you 15 million in other ways. I can’t really imagine a fan of the nba thinking this is a good thing to have going on. Now if they didn’t do it, or proof can’t be found they won’t be punished. But seems very strange to be upset about them looking into it.

Certainly.  But if they find Signal on Morey”s phone, that won’t be good for Philly either.

I agree and obviously the most likely outcome is that nothing is found/happens. It is pretty interesting they are taking phone records and texts which I don’t think they would do without a reasonable reason to be suspicious (literally nobody wants to turn their phone over for an investigation cause there are going ti be embarrassing things that can be seen unrelated to the investigation).

The NBA got pretty ticked off a few years ago and required teams to keep all records of negotiation and planning for one year.  It’s not that surprising they’re taking phones, to look for texts as well as Apps like Signal that auto-delete messages and are prohibited by the NBA.

Does anyone really believe that there was no tampering between Morey and Harden? Morey's been tampering with Harden since Harden was in Brooklyn.
