Mavericks Emerge As Favorites To Sign Al Horford

If it's really the Mavs that this info is coming from then this has to be a negotiating ploy.  Why go to the Mavs and lose when you can stay with the Celtics and lose.

Salary, no income tax, etc.

If Boston is offering, say, $60 million over three years and Dallas is hinting at 4 years for $100 million, where would you go?

Tampering is like traveling.

If it's really egregious and public, they may do something about it.

Otherwise, it's just how the game is played.

Inducing a player to decline an option should be considered egregious, and given how quickly the rumor is spreading, it seems rather public at this point.

Silver has been stepping up the tampering enforcement relative to Stern.  He doesn’t like it.  If there’s evidence, he should take action, assuming a complaint is filed.

I know people are out of place considering what transpired but this sounds a lot like tampering. Especially when it causes a player to decline his option and salary.

Exactly. No one was complaining when it was pretty clear we tampered with Gordon.

Depending on what you think of Doncic and KP's health, Dallas could be very good if they add someone like Al to the rest of that roster.

With GSW a gigantic question mark due to injuries/FAs, Houston imploding before our eyes - the west is as open as it's been in 5 years. I think if you add Al to KP and Luka, get a couple of 3&D wings, Mavs could be dangerous.

I'm SO much more disappointed in losing Al than Kyrie.

What was clear about it?

If he agreed to a deal with us at 12:01am on 7/1/17, fair.

But over 3 days later? Neither Brad nor Danny is that dumb.

But maybe I’m missing some evidence that you could provide?

If anyone gives him 4 years $100 million they are out of their minds!! Horford will average 60 games a year from here on out.

Wish Al the best...total class act....I think the C's are glad too--didn't wanna pay him $100 million, or even the $30 mil from this year I bet.

There were whispers of Gordon coming to Boston the minute we hired Brad, you really don't think we utilized those back channels at all? It's the same as Bron, Wade, and Bosh teaming up in Miami - there's no hard evidence, but it's clear Pat Riley knew Bron & Bosh were coming. The difference between the Danny Ainge and Pat Riley types versus the Magic Johnson types is that the former knows to not be blatant about it.

I forgot which player it was, but he said players and teams typically know how things are going to shake out well before free agency. It's the nature of the league.

Al Horford has made about 150 million from his NBA contracts.

Getting 100 million instead of 60 or 75 or 80 (whatever the C's offered) is a big deal.

Huh ? Whether he totals 150Mil, 200Mil, 250Mil, or "just" 50Mil, Horford and his family and his grandkids and their grandkids are all set financially for a very long time. Give me a break.

Nope, no break deserved.  This is not the way players look at it.  The correct comparison is 100 vs. 60.  Not "a lot of money" vs. "a whole lot of money".

Basketball is a business. Al should maximize his earnings as much as possible for as long as possible.

Besides the Clippers getting Leonard, the most legit team I think could be the Jazz.  They just made a trade for Conley. Favor's contract isn't guaranteed so letting him go should open enough space to sign Al.

The lineup would be conley, mitchell, ingles, horford, and gobert.  That is a stacked team that I think fits well together.

Favors and Gobert couldn't stretch. Ingles is a great passer and shooter. Al can shoot and pass. Conley and Mitchell can score. Al and Gobert hold down the paint.  I think this team becomes a legit contender if he goes there.
