Poor kid, I hope he fully recovers. If he makes it to the NBA, he might have to be load-managed, much like Terry Cummings of the Milwaukee Bucks. He was a 2x all-star who never averaged more than 36 mpg after his first season. I think he was eventually limited to something like 25-30 mpg.

Wow.  I still remember exactly where I was at that moment.  Summer vacation at my aunt's house, another aunt was visiting.  My cousins and I were all shocked and saddened.  I was older and I had spent years rooting for him, so Reggie hit me harder than Bias.

Listening to heart specialists, he could be back on the court next week or never play again depending on the underlying cause.

For context, USC had this exact thing happen last summer to a player and he was back on the court in January and played out the season without incident.

I think of Hank Gathers all the time when I hear of these stories.  Hope he has a full recovery!

Yeah.  This could be Jeff Green (sat out a year), or Isaiah Austin (ended his career), or Vincent Iwuchukwu (the USC teammate who went on to during the season after his cardiac event).

I too was on vacation when it happened, at the beach, and my dad came down to let me know.

This was probably at the peak of my basketball card collecting days, and I remember being all excited and bragging to my friend because I had Reggie Lewis's rookie card and it's going to be worth a ton of money now (FYI - current market value seems to be $1-$2), and then my mom scolded me for being excited about a basketball card when somebody had just died.

One of the more cringey moments from my youth that I remember.

I was coming home from the batting cages with my dad.  I remember vividly that we were on Rte 140 crossing over Rte 290 and the news broke on the radio.  I was 12 at the time and it was absolutely devastating.

I’m not sure if this is a bit of hyperbole but him playing basketball a week after a cardiac arrest is absolutely insane.

Bronny has been apparently getting a second opinion at Mayo Clinic and is a long way from resuming any sort of basketball activities (if he ever does). I got a bit worried when people said he could be back in a week or two but glad to see they are getting extensive medical tests. His life is so much more than basketball

I would be amazed if that happens. A cardiac arrest isn't something you just shrug off, even if you are very lucky and they restart your heart within a minute or less. There's all kinds of damage that can happen when blood stops flowing to your brain and other organs. The quickness of his recovery will really depend on what caused his cardiac arrest. If there's an underlying medical issue that caused it like coronary heart disease, heart valve disease or some kind of arrythmia then the odds of him ever being able to play again will lengthen, because the risk of a repeat episode might be too great.

But if it's treatable, or it's something like commotio cordis where it's caused by external force hitting your chest like what happened with Damar Hamlin or Louis Acompora, the high schooler whose death after being hit in the chest playing lacrosse in 2000 led to New York passing a law requiring all schools to have AEDs, and there's no underlying heart condition, then he should eventually be able to come back. As Moranis said Vince Iwuchukwu suffered a cardiac arrest (also at USC) and returned seven months later. Christian Erikson, the Danish soccer player, suffered a cardiac arrest in June 2021 playing for Denmark against Finland at Euro '20 in Copenhagen. I was watching that game, it was eerily similar to what happened to Hamlin, they had to resuscitate him on the field. They called off the match and resumed playing it in the evening by which time he was awake in hospital. After having a pacemaker installed he was able to return to play a year later.

So it's certainly possible - just depends what caused it, how much damage he suffered and what is the likelihood that sports, including the risk of contact, causes a recurrence.

I feel so bad for the kid. Following in the footsteps of the arguably greatest player of all time, he was already under tremendous pressure.  I hope he's thinking about a Plan B. As someone else mentioned in this thread, there's more to life than basketball.

Hopefully, Dr. Mudge is no longer practicing.

Treatable congenital heart defect. Expected to return to basketball soon

Once again, NOT the covid vaccine as some people tried to 'report' shortly after this happened.
