I wonder what Maye's issue is... whether it's accuracy or reading the field or something else.

My impression of him at UNC was that he had all the physical tools and all the throws but was slow to read coverage.  Not sure if that's still the case.

The thing with Maye is, his ceiling is tantalizing. But with that comes a lot of development and some patience. It was the same thing with a guy like Josh Allen. NOT saying he'll definitely become him, but there's a reason Maye's ceiling is seen as a Hebert/Allen type QB if he gets there. It's gonna take some time though, but I think the Pats wanted to take the "high ceiling" guy as opposed to a potential "high floor/game manager" type guy similar to JJ McCarthy and his profile.

Mac Jones entered the 2021 season as the most "pro-ready" QB of all the Draft picks (high floor, low ceiling), even over the #1 pick Lawrence. But there were always questions about his ceiling and whether he could really become an elite guy, and the reality is he didn't.

I'm not expecting Maye to start for a while anyways. The goal for this season is to build for 2025 and beyond hopefully with Maye taking the next steps.

I am interested to see what Milton does though. I wouldn't mind him as a "gadget" QB and someone over Zappe on the depth chart.

This is what Holley said after seeing him at camp:

Thanks for the link.

I don't want to overreact to one practice, but a lot of that does match my impression of him at UNC.  So that's not wonderful.  Hope he figures it out.

Maye is certainly not a sure thing. He has a high potential, but there's a chance that he busts after spending the #3 pick. In that scenario, it's going to hurt even more if Marvin Harrison or Joe Alt likely fulfill their potential.

It's a boring time of the year and the sports guys need to sell. Drake looking bad in practice sells.

I'm not concerned if a rookie is having trouble against a first team NFL defense early on.

I am not basing anything on these practice reports.  Maye is young. I never expected him to be ready day 1 in any case.  I am going to wait to see how he looks in preseason games and then not expect to see much of him this season.

Good to hear. Hopefully he can build on this.

Maye entered Thursday coming off his two toughest practices of the offseason. The No. 3 overall pick went 8-of-15 on Tuesday, where the entire offense struggled, and before that, on Monday, finished 3-of-11 with an interception.

On Day 7 of Patriots camp, Maye bounced back. The rookie finished 7-of-10 overall and looked more accurate and efficient during Thursday?s practice.

For the offense, most of this day was in the red zone. Maye went 5-of-6 in full-team drills. That included nice throws to DeMario Douglas downfield and Mitchell Wilcox in the end zone. His one incomplete pass in 11-on-11s was a low throw to Douglas.

In 7-on-7s, Maye finished 2-of-4 with touchdowns to LaMichael Pettway and K.J. Osborn. He should?ve had a third touchdown, but after hitting JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marcus Jones smacked the ball out of the receiver?s hands.

Jacoby Brissett had a steady day with the top unit. The veteran went 8-of-13 overall. In full-team drills, Brissett went 5-of-8 with touchdowns to Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson, and Osborn.

In 7-on-7s, Brissett went 3-of-5. He connected with Hunter Henry for back-to-back scores and finished with a touchdown to Tyquan Thornton.

Joe Milton III and Bailey Zappe split reps. Milton received one period of 7-on-7 work and looked efficient, completing 3-of-5 passes. He hit Kayshon Boutte, Ja?Lynn Polk, and Kawaan Baker for touchdowns.

Zappe received one period of 11-on-11 work. He finished 1-of-4 with a touchdown to Boutte.

Bailey Zappe is still here woah. Thought he'd been shipped out with Mac Jones

The receiver competition is going to be tough.  Per Pats Pulpit, here is the current depth:

DeMario Douglas
Kendrick Bourne
Ja?Lynn Polk
K.J. Osborn
Javon Baker
JuJu Smith-Schuster
Tyquan Thornton
Jalen Reagor
Kayshon Boutte
Kawaan Baker
David Wallis
JaQuae Jackson

Teams usually keep 6 unless someone is more of a special teams guy.  This list is some good young potential talent and some kind of stale old talent.  Douglas and Bourne are the top 2, Douglas is not going anywhere, Bourne could be traded.  The rookies (Polk and Javon Baker) are likely not going anywhere.  Osborn was just signed at fair money so he probably sticks.

This is a young team so JuJu is not a good fit anymore.  Thornton probably should move on.  Reagor hasn't shown much.  Is it better to trade (or cut) the older guys including even Bourne and keep more young players?  Here is my 6:

Douglas
Bourne
Osborn
Polk
J. Baker
Boutte

Yes, I am still in on Boutte over Thornton.  I keep Bourne as I feel you need one good solid vet.  JuJu and Reagor are expendable, trade them if you can, or cut them, and play the young talent.  Thornton may figure it out somewhere else.  The rest, I really don't know that much about.

Next year, when Drake Maye is the QB and the games count (this year is another tankathon), I imagine this will be the depth:

1) Top 5 pick/Tee Higgins/Brandon Aiyuk/True #1
2) Kendrick Bourne
3) Ja'Lynn Polk
4) KJ Osborn
5) Pop Douglas
6) Javon Baker

We need that top option to free up the other guys, who have potential as good #2 and #3 receivers.

I?m excited to see Pats play football.  I always am. I was way back in pathetic times, and I?m excited for the upcoming season. There are always things to root for, always moments of interest in a 17 game season.  My hope is that they give us a possible playoff berth to root for, and of they don?t and it?s looking like last year, I?ll eventually root for the pick.  Definitely have a number of story lines that could build excitement for the future.

You are getting ahead of yourself.  Bourne is signed to a decent contract for 3 total seasons so sure, keep him around.  Osborn is only signed for this season, he probably would not be in the mix next season, maybe.  He is 27 now.  His slot in 2025-26 will probably be filled by one of the young players.

As to signing a high end FA WR (or a trade), I am not sure that is the best use of cap space.  Definitely not this season, and maybe not next season either.  I actually like the WR by committee approach.  It is too easy to take one guy out of the game plan these days.  Keep bringing in young receivers.

Yeah, we don?t even know if Maye will be starting next year. Hopefully, but no one knows what he will be in the NFL. Doubt Kraft is willing to spend  a bunch of money on a #1 WR before he knows what he has at QB.

According to a recent report, the 49ers have the framework for a Brandon Aiyuk trade between the Patriots and Browns. The deal is dependent on Aiyuk choosing the team that offers the better compensation package.
