Here's how I see it.  $80M is for what you already are.  The remaining $35M is for what we HOPE you become.  So, its a $35M gamble....over 4 years.  So, Danny is gambling $8.75M per year for 4 years.

As others have mentioned, there's a goodwill element to the Jaylen signing that has a chance to pay dividends for the organization.  Jaylen strikes me a player who won't allow the big contract to affect his overall commitment and effort level.  I expect him to handle things the same way as Smart.  The signing also sends a nice message to Jayson Tatum.

Ultimately the Celtics will need to push the reset button if Jaylen and/or Tatum don't become perennial All-Stars.  I'm on board with going all in on the young guys for the next 4+ years.

Isn't what we hope he will become also a gamble?  Hope isn't the same as probability

Hopefully it serves as motivation to earn it. Think about Crowder having his best season after his new deal, or Smart's improvements last year.

And maybe it will also serve as motivation for Tatum. He sees the money they're throwing around for Brown, he'd better get more than that next year.

It's the year 2030. This is a 30 for 30 about the Boston Celtics.

What if I told you that the Celtics' decade of success was not the result of two max free agents the Celtics signed, or of fan favorite Jayson Tatum--a high level scorer acquired in a deal that ultimately stopped the process in Philadelphia?

What if I told you the best defender on that team was not Marcus Smart, who was known as a switching bulldog that could shut down Centers and forwards just as well as guards?

What if I told you that Jaylen Brown was the key? What if I told you the team was best when Brown succeeded? What if I told you his competitiveness leveraged them past teams that seemed far more talented? What if I told you his three minutes 10 point offensive spurts almost single-handedly won playoff series?

Jaylen’s salary next year will put him as the 47th highest paid player if he doesn’t earn the $2 million bonus for MVP, DPOY, or All-NBA, pending any changes that occur in free agency this summer.  For perspective, ESPN ranked him 51 in the NBA entering this season.  I’m not a huge fan of player rankings, and certainly salary lists have players below Jaylen who are underpaid and above Jaylen who are overpaid, but on the whole it seems difficult to argue that this is an overpay, or even paying all that much for potential.

worth the risk ....better winning  attitude than many top five picks over last few years such as Wiggins , without the drug or maturity issues of other top picks and NOT RUINed by teams such as Club LeBron " Divas"  , Lakers " anything goes " or Philly with their odd ball building programs .  Type of Swingman ,Pops , Bucks , Nets Pacers would kill for

Low risk investment .

This is incorrect.

Ainge is a rational negotiator. He is paying a price he feels is less than or equal to his median expectations. He HOPES he outperforms this contract. He expects he will justify it.

Brown is a great lockerroom fit with a high ceiling to grow into with his outstanding athleticism.

That said, I'm not sure he has proven that he is worth 30m per year.  But the Celtics must believe he can reach that potential or they wouldn't be shelling out this huge contract.

Maybe we could have tried to pay less, but obviously 4/80 was going to be turned down, but would he have gone for 4/100 or 4/105?  Hard to tell.  But obviously he felt 4/115 was a nobrainer no questions asked, I'm signing this.  JB is very happy with his contract situation now.  Hopefully he steps up into that all-star status this year and justifies his new pricetag.

i saw an interview where Jaylen said that he was hearing that he could maybe get paid more from other teams after this year, but that playing for other teams is not the same thing as playing for the Boston Celtics, suggesting a bit of a hometown/bleed green discount, or that he views 4/115 here as the same as a more money contract elsewhere, so hopefully he has no regrets about taking what could be perceived as less.

plus, from what ive seen in the media, the celtics wouldnt have cap room anyway to sign someone comparable if Jaylen bounced

Plus, it's only $115m if he hits all his bonuses. Which is incredibly unlikely. Should be closer to $105-110m I think, can't remember the  exact figure.

My only firm takeaway from this is that it's crazy that this kind of money makes Jaylen only the 47th highest paid player in the NBA.

There is so much money in the NBA right now. Jeez...

well, so far I like the development that I have seen from Jaylen. seems to have worked on his handle and his passing.

The jump pass to hayward was beautiful...and he seems to have improved on his handle where he isn't losing the ball as much when in the paint and is now able to finish those plays.
