All about them bigs. Be nice to see some NBA(ish) basketball, and Rob Williams in green.
Last summer we got to see that Jaylen was working on his handle, which bore fruit as the year went on. Want to se Semi hitting his shots and attacking close outs; Yabu having some idea where he’s supposed to be, and whatever they have RW teed up to do. Honestly, just seeing some focused effort from the new guy in D will probably make everybody feel better.
The Sixers have acquired my draft binky Bonga from the Lakers!

I want to see Semi.
His development could make Morris expendable.
Yabu could potentially play the same roll as Theis if he figures things out.
I'm kinda new to the blog. Why do certain posters refer to draft prospects as binkies?
Just now seeing that we play the baby Sixers. Remember last year’s SL opener against Philly? That chill Tatum game-winner. Often, SL doesn’t tell you anything; that one, though...Forgot about that Tatum shot!
Why the F is Williams not starting? Punishment for missing the plane? Not ready

Definitely curious about RW, but I agree that Semi is the one I hope takes a step forward this season.
Williams not in starting lineup. Yabu is the small ball center. He missed an open 3 that was the shot he wanted. Let's see what he can do in Summer league action.Just made a great defensive play on the in bounds and made the layup.

[dang] sweet stroke Rob. And that sky for the board :o
Williams looks long as Capella , but maybe tye rest of the players are just kinda short
Uthoff having a bad start.
[dang] sweet stroke Rob. And that sky for the board :oHis jumping ability is remarkable.
Good to know that Williams' physical tools aren't a myth. Summer league won't teach us anything else really, but he has every bit of the length and athleticism that was in the scouting report.
This Uthoff guy sucks.
Just tuning in. Williams out with a knee???
nickname for Williams

What a sequence by Yabu! He’s the same Yabu, very inconsistent.

Robert Williams gently grabbed his left knee area after time expired and is going to the locker room after some stretching on the bench.
Think they're just being extra cautious

ojeyle looking great! He’s the best player on this summer roster, which is good. He’s played real games he should be better than most summer league players. But you can’t put too much into summer stats. He’s not going to be getting those kind of looks in a real NBA game. It’s concerning that he’s only 1 for 5 from 3. That’s horrible. And those are the shots he needs to make.
you could see yabu didn't have the hops to go up there for the oop.
wish we could see more of williams out on the floor.
Yabu is driving me nuts.

Thanks, everyone, but I was only interested in Uthoff's performance, since it sounds like he played the worst 6 minutes in the history of basketball, lol ;) ::) ;D.

Decent athlete for his size and he's aggressive but that shot isn't anything close to consistent.Yabu still seems wildly inconsistent.

Got smoked on defense, very slow to react, and he got blocked, then proceeded to brick a shot after. He did settle down, and had a nice euro step for a easy lay in. I still like Uthoff, but just looks sluggish.
Where is fultz? I am worried about him
Where is fultz? I am worried about himI’m sick of seeing him courtside in this game. That’s what we had all last year.

We win and they do a post game interview with a 76er player. This broadcast brought to you by the guys who voted Ainge 4th place for exec of the year, Stevens 3rd place for COY
You're getting annoying but I'll answer. They want him to focus on his shooting sessions with Drew Hanlin. There really isn't much upside to him playing summer league and quite a bit of downside. If you recall, he got injured last summer league and ended up missing a few weeks.Where is fultz? I am worried about himFultz isn't playing Summer league.
Wow. Most 76ers fans really wanted him to get in the reps cause he had such limited game action in a wasted season. But do pray tell, why is he above it all superfan?

Eh, he scored the third-most ever in a summer league game, and was clearly the biggest individual story. Wasn’t unreasonable.
His trade value is low. Shooting well in summer league wouldn't affect that. Shooting poorly could adversely affect whatever confidence he has built back. Suffering even a minor injury would set back his recovery. They need to get Fultz in the best position physically and mentally for him to succeed before they put him on the court in a competitive game.QuoteYou're getting annoying but I'll answer. And Yabu seals the game!As Summer League goes, this wasn't a hard to watch game.
Summer league basketball is ugly, but it's basketball. Happy to see a win.

Just some quick notes:I'm not so optimistic about what we saw. Yabu still looks raw, hasn't grown as much as he should have. I also think Semi didn't really show us what we needed to see. He was better attacking the rim, but I don't think that will ever be an important part of his game in the NBA. He needs to be able to hit the three, and he still can't. It's only the first game, but it's worrisome. If he can't hit threes then his ceiling is low and he will be of limited value.
- Bird looks pretty good, but I'm afraid his frailty is always going to be an issue. He just doesn't have the look of any sort of sturdiness aboout him.
- Semi looked solid, as we should have expected. I'm sure Brad was happy to see that.
- Yabu reminds me of Perk. Odd run, awkward looking when moving on the court, both with and without the ball, powerfully built. I'm not equating them, but I do find that similarity interesting. On a more game-specific note, he'd better get that shot to fall more often, if he wants to stay in the NBA.
- Williams
sucked!was awesome!showed the sort of ups and downs we'd expect in a first outing. The knee report I heard from the commenters on tv didn't seem like a problem, so here's to him playing tomorrow without those first game jitters.
That seems like enough for a start.

The Yips can be quite serious. MLB pitchers who can no longer throw strikes consistently. An MLB catcher who can't throw the ball back to the pitcher on the mound.

Agree on Yabu. He still looks a bit out of control and really needs to hit 3's consistently if he is going to take them. We know Semi can defend, so no surprise there. I don’t think it means much that he was able to attack the rim in a summer league game, the defense is terrible in summer league. To be more than a fringe player in the NBA he needs to be able to hit threes. The fact that he does not seem to have improved on this is concerning.Fair enough. Let's see how he does tonight. He might have felt undue pressure to lead this junior squad.

Most of Korkmaz' outside field goals came with Semi guarding him. He gave him too much space and didn't move laterally very well, even got outfaked. This is a concern.

These comments are baffling... Are you suggesting that you can discern any improvement/lack of, in Semi's 3 point shooting, in 25 minutes of one summer league game?? Also, you do realize the season ended 4 weeks ago, right? Did you expect some type of incredible jump in his game since then?
I love this blog, but some of these takes are pure nonsense.

I was actually the one who was claiming that Semi looked real good in the 1st game. Then bellerephon pointed out that we can expect that kind of performance from a guy who started playoff games only a month ago. So what did I do? I went back and watched the replays again and saw a concerning issue that explained (at least in part) why an opposing player went off for 40 points. If you've got a better explanation, I'd love to hear it.

" To be more than a fringe player in the NBA he needs to be able to hit threes. The fact that he does not seem to have improved on this is concerning." -- Explain to me, and be specific, how this is not a scolding hot and incredibly reactionary take.
Semi started games IN THE PLAYOFFS for a team that was an average shooting night from the NBA finals. I am fascinated about how anyone could disrespect this man by allowing the word fringe anywhere near him.
I dont think i need to say much more.
I am not concerned by an end of the bench player scoring 40 points on a man who flexed his combat muscles on some of the best players in the league, when the games meant something. The guy has ****ned combat muscles the size of Delaware.

Guiding principles of Summer League:
1. Summer league means nothing in a normal sense, but that doesn't mean there aren't takeaways.
2. If a player struggles in year two, its normally not good.
3. If a player has a lot of turnovers and/or bad shots, it can actually be a good thing. It shows confidence and the ability to try to learn.
4. You can tell more about a player's athleticism in summer league than anything.
I lost interest when Williams taken out.
Hope nothing serious.
Let me add one more thing regarding my take on Semi. In order to even make an NBA roster a player usually needs to have at least one skill that can make a difference. It could be defense, or three point shooting, or running the point. But that will only get a guy on a roster. To actually get real playing time a player needs to combine that difference making skill with the ability to contribute at least a little bit in other areas.
Let's look at Smart. His defense is his difference making skill. He can't shoot at all. But he can run the point, start the offense, throw lobs, and run pick and roll. Also consider Baynes. He plays good post defense, that's his difference making skill. But he can shoot a bit, set picks, and has even been able to hit the three.
Semi plays good defense, but that's it. That was enough to get him on the floor when the Celts were suffering with injuries, but with a healthy roster he simply doesn't bring enough to the table to deserve significant time. If he can add a three point shot that would change matters. But we simply haven't seen it at this level.
QuoteBird looks pretty good, but I'm afraid his frailty is always going to be an issue. He just doesn't have the look of any sort of sturdiness aboout him.
Are you serious, Reggie Miller and George Gervin looked anorexic and they did fine. It's not the old NBA where hand checking could stop guys who were skinny.

To be fair the criticism of Semi that you quoted here is from me, not Surferdad. I stand by my criticism, however. Semi's playing time was largely a result of injuries, if the Celts had a full roster he would not have played much in the playoffs IMHO. He proved that he can play defense at the NBA level, he deserves respect for that. But he also showed that he had nothing to add on the offensive end. That will limit him to a fringe role unless he can improve.
In the first summer league game he showed more ability to attack the rim than he showed in the NBA last year, but in truth I don't think that will translate to the NBA where the defense is much better. Especially since he hasn't shown he can hit the three. Defenders won't need to close out on him and can sit back and keep him out of the lane. Furthermore, he's not really all that good at attacking the rim anyways. He did it in a summer league game against guys who won't make the NBA playing terrible defense.
I stand by my comment that his poor three point shooting is a concern. I will concede that it is only one game, but this is his pattern. He shot poorly last year from three. He has given us no reason to think that is going to change. Maybe it will, but until I see him consistently hitting the three, I will be skeptical that he is anything more than an end of the bench defensive sub.
Finally, I don't see him playing enough next season to grow very much. Right now he is the 11th man on the roster at best (Irving, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, Horford, Baynes, Smart, Rozier, Theis, Morris) and could possibly drop further if Wanamaker proves he can play or if the Celts add someone who can shoot. How many minutes can he reasonably be expected to get?
