Game Notes
The Celtics finish up their three game road trip with a stop in Chicago to take on the Bulls.  Much has changed for both teams since they last met in last year's playoffs. Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade are no longer starting for the Bulls and the Celtics have done a complete makeover with 11 new players on the team.

Last season The Celtics and Bulls split the season series 2-2 with each team winning on their home court.  This is the first of 4 games between these two teams this season.  They will meet in Boston on December 23 and April 6 and once more in Chicago on March 5.

The Celtics are playing in the second of back to back games.  They are 2-1 overall and 1-0 when the games are both on the road, as they are in this case.  The Celtics are 11-3 on the road while the Bulls are 3-8 at home.  The Celtics are looking for their second straight win while the Bulls have won two straight for the first time this season and are looking to forge new territory with a 3 game win streak.

The Bulls are the youngest team in the league with an average age of 24.5 years old.  All of their players are under 30 years old and 10 of their 17 players are under 24, which is the most players under 24 on any team in the league.  They also currently have the worst record in the league and that is saying something with all of the teams that are tanking this season.

Zach Lavine (ACL) and Cameron Payne (foot) are both out for the Bulls.  Gordon Hayward (ankle) is out indefinitely for the Celtics.  Marcus Morris did not play against the Pistons and is doubtful for this game with continued soreness in his knee.  Al Horford bumped knees in the game against the Pistons and left the game briefly but returned to finish the game.  He is questionable for this game as it's not known whether there will remain any soreness in the knee leading into this game.

With Marcus Morris still sidelined, Aron Baynes should once again start at center.  I'm thinking that Al will be able to play in this game, but if not, Brad may start Marcus Smart at the two and then move Jaylen Brown to small forward and slide Jayson Tatum over to the power forward spot.  The Bulls starting lineup is the one listed in their game notes.

Key Matchups

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/201143.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1628374.png)
Al Horford vs Lauri Markkanen
Assuming that Al will be able to play in this game, he will be matched up with Bulls Rookie Lauri Markkanen, who has been playing very well.  Markkanen is averaging 14.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and has hit 56 three pointers so far this season, hitting at least one in each game.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/203382.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/201577.png)
Aron Baynes vs Robin Lopez
Baynes is coming off an excellent game against Andre Drummond and the Detroit Pistons.  Hopefully he continues that in this game as he is matched up with Robin Lopez.  Lopez is averaging 13.4 points,  5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.

Honorable Mention

Jaylen Brown vs Justin Holiday
Holiday is averaging 14.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.25 steals.  Brown has been wearing goggles that affect his eyesight somewhat and hopefully he is beginning to get more used to them.  Either way, he should get the better of this matchup.

Keys to the Game
Rebound - The Celtics must box out and crash the boards.  They can't score without the ball and it will take extra effort on their part to grab the rebounds.  The Celtics have been rebounding very well but have also had a couple of lapses where they allowed their opponent to out-rebound them.  The Celtics are grabbing 45.1 rebounds per game while the Bulls are averaging 44.4 rebounds per game.

Be Aggressive
-  I already mentioned that the Celtics must be aggressive on the boards, but they also must be aggressive on defense, in going after loose balls,  and just all around going all out. They have to aggressively attack the basket. They need to start the game with that aggressive attitude and be aggressive through the whole game with no let up.  They can't let the Bulls outwork them, or they may end up with a loss.

Play Defense
-  Defense wins games.  The Celtics are tops in the league with a defensive rating of 99.0.  They had been letting their defense slip a bit for a few games but seemed to right the ship against the Pistons and got back to their tough team defense once again.  The Celtics need to continue to make defense a priority.

Move the Ball Carefully - The Celtics need to move the ball and find the open man.  When they move the ball, good things usually happen.  When the ball stops and players try to do too much, the offense bogs down and the Celtics have trouble scoring.  They need to play the team ball that has gotten them the best record in the league.

X-Factors
Fatigue - The Celtics are playing the 3rd game in 4 nights and on back to back nights on the road.  With travel and all the games, the players could be getting a bit tired.  Hopefully they can shake it off and play hard and not run out of gas down the stretch.

Playing Bad Teams -  The Bulls have the Worst record in the league with just 5 wins this season so far.  It would be easy to write them off and come out with less than 100% effort.  The Celtics need to come out and play hard from the opening tip to the final buzzer or else they may end up giving the Bulls their 6th win.

Well considering the Bulls have had one of the worst defensive seasons in a while, Smart is going to have a field day from the pick and roll.

I'm pumped for this game. Hopefully we can keep the ball moving offensively, but I do want to see Brown and Tatum in the post a bit.

Also, I'd like a heavy dose of Yabusele, as long as he is engaged and not floating.

Let's throttle them defensively.

Excited to see Brown versus a rejuvenated Kris Dunn, who finally looks to be finding his NBA footing.

Over his last 7 games Dunn is averaging 17pts, 7.6 ast, 5.3 reb, 2stl on 50/53% shooting.

I hope that we start Smart - Rozier - Brown - Tatum - Baynes. That gives playing opportunity to Bird in a second unit featuring Larkin - Bird - Ojeleye - Yabusele - Theis. Anyhow, lots of playmaking responsibilities to Smart and Larkin if all these guys are not playing.

I could care less about freeing Nader, Bird or Allen. They're end of the bench fodder. Celtic fodder, but still fodder. What I want to see freed tonight is Jaylen and Jayson as #1 and/or #2 scoring options. I want to see the offense run through them. Hope Smart and Rozier allow that to happen.

Maybe he idolizes Rondo.  Assists are better than a basket.

If you are gonna have Brown be the lone starter in with the bench unit then put the ball in his hands. Run a pick and roll with him or something. Lets see what he can do with some more usage.

Then quit to going to that play.  C's should be attacking the paint, not throwing up 3's.

Really irresponsible of the Cs to give Irving the night off - I mentioned in another thread that I was worried about this. They work their butts off for wins against teams like GSW and SAS, but then give a freebie away to the worst team in the league.

There are several players on the Cs tonight than who I am 100% sure I would have played better. I understand that missing Irving disrupts the balance, but who knew that he was also 1st Team All Defense.

I am pretty sure the only reason he is on the roster is to prove to agents/future players that if you are drafted by the Cs and asked to play in the D-League that your hard work can pay off. This theory goes out the window when he actually plays, but, man, he really is about the worst player in the league.

Kyrie was hurting. Why not give him a night off? The Celtics will win enough regular season games to be a top 4 seed. Health is more important than any single regular season game.

Agreed.  The youth need more reps like tonight, too, if they're going to make necessary contributions in the playoffs.

Just please tell me that Kyrie came to the game tonite and sat with his teammates on the bench ................ as opposed to staying back in his 5-star hotel suite playing NBA 2K.

He should've done the latter.

We're getting lit up by a combination of Portis, Mirotic, Grant, and Nwaba.

After a strong defensive performance against Detroit, we come to Chicago and play like this.  We look tired which is understandable, but also uninterested which is not.  Better chew 'em out good Brad.

You know what was different, we actually played tough games and have won a great majority of them. It's not like they have had to fight and claw their way through the season winning and being a top team in the league. I doubt they are tired because it doesn't take effort to win 6 games out of the entire season so far. They just started winning at that, this made three in a row so they basically had 3 wins out of all those games before a few days ago, yeah they really worked themselves to pure exhaustion.  :o

4 of Chicago's last 7 games have been decided by 2 points or less, plus the scheduling that I mentioned, which was tough for both teams.  Does that not factor into the equation at all?  Honestly, I suspect that Boston took Chicago lightly, but should we have lost by 23 points?  No, of course not, but if you underestimate your opponent, you have already lost.

Quote
the Bulls (6-20) built an 18-point lead in the second quarter against the Eastern Conference leaders

I told my son when Nader went in, that the Bulls would go on a run.  He is not the reason we lost,   but the guy can't play D at the NBA level.  When I called him "lead-killer" early in the season, I was not far off.  The above run corresponded with Nader and Larkin entering the game.  I almost wish we had signed Gerald Green than made Nader a NBA offer.

Tatum laid an egg could the post on the rookie wall have cursed him?  JK

We were undermanned, the bulls were hot.

It was the Second game of a back to back.

I do think we are  a fragile team though in terms of depth.

We are going to lose some games folks it happens.

I'd be very happy if the Celtics could pick up Portis. Good player, bad person, but good player.

Based on last night I would say Portis is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

he always seems to play well against us -- perhaps showing Danny what he missed by picking Rozier instead.

if he played like this more often (or just plain played better more often) he wouldn't be buried on the bench of a crappy Bulls team.

That game was an absolute trainwreck.  The 20-2 Bulls run killed them & the C's just couldn't get into any offensive flow at all.  Defense was lackluster.

One of those games you just forget about and move on.  2nd half of a road back to back and no Kyrie or Morris.  People shouldn't read much into this game at all.

But what’s the point of the internet if not to read too much into a single game?

Sorry you got to see such a dud of a game in person.

Yeah, not pleasant although the Bulls fans around us were pretty easy on us.  They knew that they were seeing about a C version of the Celtics.

The worse part is that the next time the C's are out here is March 5th.  A Monday night in the heart of tax season.  No way I'm making that game.

Celtics shot 39%
Bulls shot 48%

Celtics will lose somewhere around 20 games this year...brace yourself, Larry Bird isn't walking through that door. Kevin Garnett has a radio show and Pierce is on TV in a shirt and tie. Just going to have to get by with what we got and if what we got shoots 39% and the other team shoots 48%? Bill Russell playing 39 minutes is going to lose that shooting contest.

I will observe that the paint in United last night was full of imaginary hot coals and the Celtics as a team? Were wearing slippers. On 40 occasions Celtics players elected a three over trying to get to the hoop. The vaunted "waiting to get hot from three tactic" didn't go so well.

I recommend skipping the film session and movin' on.

While not a "scheduled loss" necessarily, you could look at the calendar and see this as a trap game. Especially if Kyrie was out. The Bulls really stink, but they have players capable of bringing good effort. Sometimes effort alone is enough.

Considering that they're first in the east missing Hayward, I'll give them a pass here or there for delivering a clunker.

we looked like a young team missing its 2 best players on a back to back
