Record is a single track while album is the entire album. Record encomposses the entire recording of the song while "Song of the Year" is just the written song.

You mean for song of the year they evaluate the written music and try to envision how it will stand the test of time hence theoretically All along the watch tower by Dylan would win song of year and All along the watchtower by Jimi H would win record of the year, because the Dylan recording/version was horrid even though Jimi proved it was a phenomenal song?
