Never go to a place with a palm tree, unless it has a US military base where no US soldiers have been killed for a decade (Japan and Qatar are in), or it was in the British Empire (India, South Africa, and Bermuda in), however if the "foreign language" spoken there is a corrupt dialect of something else don't go (Haiti and Jamaica are out!)

Seriously. This is how I make lots of travel decisions and I never go wrong, except in Helsinki, which was the boringest place on Earth.

Any of you guys have a travel formula?

Plan your own itinery and don't do pre-packaged vacation trips. Half the fun is the exploring.

My philosophy involves reviews on TripAdvisor and word-of-mouth.

And for what it's worth, I've heard great things about Jamaica (certain parts), but I have a lot of places on my list to visit before there.

Never go to a place with a palm tree.

Never go to a place with insect repellents for sale in discount supermarkets.

Never go to a place more than 800 miles away from a permanent public exhibition that features at least 1 Rembrandt or 1 Pre-Raphaelite.

Any place I go needs to check all these principles.

I also try to avoid countries that were colonies in the last 500 years, with the exception of New Zealand and Holland.

UAE has Palm trees and was colonised by the British...but if you get a chance you should visit that country. Dubai and Abu Dhabi in particular.

I was wondering about that myself...I think Eja said that in reference to the middle eastern countries...just a guess.

Tropical, warm countries. Very high correlation between palm trees and things like flies or popular beaches.

Every language is a "corrupt" version of something else.

I won't go anywhere where I can't count on having a nice shower every day. Been there, done that. Not again.

I am hesitant to go places where there are large health risks or where I will have to take harmful prophylactics to avoid disease.

Cause every time I see some British or American couple with guns to their heads on tv and the guys behind them are like "We need $500,000 by the end of the week or they die" it's always in a fricken place with a palm tree!

And I hate to sweat

Ultimate example....Somalia.....Lots of palm trees, not in the British empire, and I'd sweat

UAE counts, because they don't speak a corrupted language.  They speak Arabic, which is one of my favorites.

List any places that you had a good time in.

I went to Nicaraugua recently, and it was great, cheap country. And went to the carribean side and it was like going back in time, I loved it. And the ladies were very nice. 8)

I definitely prefer places with a good public transit system.  I also like places where English is commonly spoken.
