Disgraced basketball referee Tim Donaghy told investigators in the NBA betting probe that relationships among officials, coaches and players "affected the outcome of games," his attorney said. The league said the charges were unfounded.

Donaghy's attorney made the assertions in a letter filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn on Monday, in which he argued that his client should be sentenced to probation because he fully cooperated with prosecutors and has been undergoing treatment for his gambling addiction.
The attorney also suggested that Donaghy told investigators about the gambling activities of other NBA officials and about a referee that passed "confidential" information to an unidentified coach.
True or not, this isn't good for the NBA.
I'm not sure if it's poor writing or if Donaghy was being purposefully vague, but it's hard to tell if Donaghy is alleging that players / coaches helped to fix games.
I mean, what does "affected the outcome of games" mean? Does that mean that because a certain official dislikes Tim Duncan, he's more likely (consciously or sub-consciously) to call a foul on him, and thus potentially affect the outcome of the game? Does it mean that some superstars get preferential treatment? Does it mean that officials like some coaches better than others?
If Donaghy is alleging the above, then the response is "You're not saying anything new here". I mean, we know all that goes on, and so long as Donaghy isn't pointing a finger at Stern saying that Stern directed him to prefer one team over another, those aren't big allegations.
However, if Donaghy is suggesting that some players / coaches were complicit in changing the outcome of games, then yes, that is absolutely a bombshell.
One thing this should clear up is allegation that Stern is directing the officials to benefit one team over another. If that was the case, you can be absolutely certain that Donaghy would be saying it now.
