Oklahoma City Thunder coach Billy Donovan won't be returning to the team next season, it was announced on Tuesday.

The team said in a statement that both parties mutually agreed to part ways.

Donovan's contract expired at season's end, and the sides decided against pursuing an extension.

Was this expected?  I’m surprised they’re not looking to retain him.  Maybe Donovan, like Doc, didn’t want to oversee a rebuild?

I think there has been the view that he didn't do that well this season as a coach (he exceeded mainstream expectations, but not by that much among people who noticed that their roster had quality NBA talent, eg. CP3, Adams, Gallo, SGA, Schroeder, etc). Would certainly try to look for a better coach if I were the Thunder FO - his plays are predictable come playoff time.
Jaylen Brown for All-NBA

Rebuild incoming?
If so, I'd be interested to see where CP3 ends up next season.

Knicks / Sixers / Bucks / Lakers / Heat / Clips / you name it

Maybe OKC will hire Brett Brown to lead them into the tank.

They've got SGA, Schroder and a boatload of picks. Wonder if they persist with Adams

(just for fun)

Celtics in: CP3 + SGA
Thunder in: Kemba + Brown

Imo, both teams say no, which probably means that it may be a fair trade. :P

Fwiw, the C's would save about $11.7 million in salary next season, hence we could reset the clock on the repeater tax.

I agree, because I don't think management would have fired him after this season. This being said, I'm not sure how OKC is going to rebuild and I find it a bit weird, after a promising season with young players who stepped up... Weird to me.

In his first season, he was the head coach for a team that went to game 7 of the Western conference finals. The following off season, KD left and the team has basically been a carousel of players every year. To me, OKC has been rebuilding ever since KD left.
