Man, Dantley has been in some interesting trades.
Drafted by Buffalo. One year there. Then traded to Indiana for Billy Knight. New face of the franchise for a team trying to find it's feet after leaving the ABA and losing it's three star frontcourt players.
One year in Indiana. Traded to the Lakers to play with Kareem for James Edwards.
Two years in LA. Then traded to Utah for Spencer Haywood whose career unfortunately was on the downturn and fell apart after the deal.
Spends 7 years in Utah. Does great things. Goes from a talented 17-21ppg to a legit All-Star and one of the most prolific scorers in the league. Then gets traded for Kelly Tripucka.
A couple of years in Detroit. Another trade. This time for Mark Aguirre.
“I decided to look to our future,” Leonard says when asked why he gave up Dantley, a popular former Notre Dame star who was leading the team in rebounding and was the NBA’s third-leading scorer at the time of the trade.
“I’ve become convinced you’ve got to have a strong man at center to compete in the NBA. In Edwards, I saw a 7-foot-1, 22-year-old, 230-pound rookie who was loaded with potential and raw talent. I felt we could develop him into the kind of center who can dominate offensively, defensively, or both.”
Leonard said he was extremely pleased with Edwards’ progress last season and figures the former University of Washington star can lead Indiana into the playoffs during the 1978-79 campaign.
I was reading this piece on James Edwards in Indiana. Just got me thinking of all the different deals Dantley has been in during his career.
I always forget that he was in LAL next to Kareem. Played a bit like Cedric Ceballos did for the Lakers 20 years later in the mid 90s. Hugged the baseline. Lots of cuts. Some post ups. Occassional jumper. The ball was going through Kareem so Dantley didn't get the types of touches he needed to be a high volume scorer. He was still super-efficient and had good volume.
Franchise guy in Indiana. Never knew Dantley was in Indiana. 23 games was all he played. 26.5ppg 3rd in scoring. James Edwards was putting up 15ppg 7rpg in 28mpg next to Kareem. I like that twin tower action there. Although they are kind of in each other's way. Both guys want to post up and score. Edwards had good chemistry with Laimbeer. Laimbeer would play in the high post and shoot jumpers. Much better parternship.
Edwards, the 46th player selected in the 1977 college draft, was picked by the Lakers to back-up the great Abdul-Jabbar. However, he was quickly pressed into service when the Lakers’ star broke a bone in his hand punching Kent Benson in the opening game of the season.
Edwards made a quick impression on Leonard in his first pro start. The Lakers’ rookie spoiled the season-opener for Indiana with a 25-point performance against the Pacers. “Right then, I knew Edwards was a comer,” remarked Leonard, who says that by the end of last season Edwards was “the best rookie center in the league.”
