So wait, what happens now?

Edit - sorry, saw the post above about picking seasons and write ups. Is that done in the Discussion thread linked on the 1st page here?
I reckon if we do it in the 'how's my team' thread it would be best, but happy to hear suggestions otherwise

Man, Dantley has been in some interesting trades.

Drafted by Buffalo. One year there. Then traded to Indiana for Billy Knight. New face of the franchise for a team trying to find it's feet after leaving the ABA and losing it's three star frontcourt players.

One year in Indiana. Traded to the Lakers to play with Kareem for James Edwards.

Two years in LA. Then traded to Utah for Spencer Haywood whose career unfortunately was on the downturn and fell apart after the deal.

Spends 7 years in Utah. Does great things. Goes from a talented 17-21ppg to a legit All-Star and one of the most prolific scorers in the league. Then gets traded for Kelly Tripucka.

A couple of years in Detroit. Another trade. This time for Mark Aguirre.

Quote
“I decided to look to our future,” Leonard says when asked why he gave up Dantley, a popular former Notre Dame star who was leading the team in rebounding and was the NBA’s third-leading scorer at the time of the trade.

“I’ve become convinced you’ve got to have a strong man at center to compete in the NBA. In Edwards, I saw a 7-foot-1, 22-year-old, 230-pound rookie who was loaded with potential and raw talent. I felt we could develop him into the kind of center who can dominate offensively, defensively, or both.”

Leonard said he was extremely pleased with Edwards’ progress last season and figures the former University of Washington star can lead Indiana into the playoffs during the 1978-79 campaign.

I was reading this piece on James Edwards in Indiana. Just got me thinking of all the different deals Dantley has been in during his career.

I always forget that he was in LAL next to Kareem. Played a bit like Cedric Ceballos did for the Lakers 20 years later in the mid 90s. Hugged the baseline. Lots of cuts. Some post ups. Occassional jumper. The ball was going through Kareem so Dantley didn't get the types of touches he needed to be a high volume scorer. He was still super-efficient and had good volume.

Franchise guy in Indiana. Never knew Dantley was in Indiana. 23 games was all he played. 26.5ppg 3rd in scoring. James Edwards was putting up 15ppg 7rpg in 28mpg next to Kareem. I like that twin tower action there. Although they are kind of in each other's way. Both guys want to post up and score. Edwards had good chemistry with Laimbeer. Laimbeer would play in the high post and shoot jumpers. Much better parternship.

Quote
Edwards, the 46th player selected in the 1977 college draft, was picked by the Lakers to back-up the great Abdul-Jabbar. However, he was quickly pressed into service when the Lakers’ star broke a bone in his hand punching Kent Benson in the opening game of the season.

Edwards made a quick impression on Leonard in his first pro start. The Lakers’ rookie spoiled the season-opener for Indiana with a 25-point performance against the Pacers. “Right then, I knew Edwards was a comer,” remarked Leonard, who says that by the end of last season Edwards was “the best rookie center in the league.”

Tom Gugliotta is a guy who I thought could've done very well in this. He had the type of skill-set that would translate well to today's league. That SF skills in the body of PF.

Shooting touch with range out to 22 feet. Likely would have been shooting 3s in today's game. He could handle the ball well. He was a very good passer both from stationary and off the dribble. I could see him running some PnR action as a PF in today's league like guys like Banchero or B Griffin have done.

Sam Perkins was a guy I was eyeing up as my 5th big man. I liked his skill-set. Sort of like a poor man's Sheed.

Very good defensive player. I am surprised S Perkins never made an All-Defense team but I guess there were a lot of high quality defensive PFs in the league around that time. Decent rebounder. Good passer. Good low post player who could score inside and/or draw double teams. Good midrange game. Developed the three point shot and was a high level three point shooter later in his career which he surely would have added at a younger age if he was playing today.

Just good to very good at every skill you want and able to play both the PF and the C position. Even able to defend the SF position which he did at times in Dallas. Versatility.

Two other guys I was surprised were not drafted were Jim Paxson and Scott Wedman.

I had Jim Paxson as a borderline starter. A lethal shooter and quality scorer. Smart. Efficient. Can handle and pass some. Good size. A short prime due to injuries but one of the finest SGs in the league at that time. Brilliant movement off the ball.

Scott Wedman was a guy I was hoping to draft as my backup SF because he sort of the ideal 3&D type SF off the bench. A high level jump-shooter who made 2nd team All-Defense earlier in his career. Transitioned well to a bench role here in BOS behind Larry Bird.

I can’t believe Malik Fitts wasn’t drafted.

Mostly, I blame myself.

One guy I thought was a chance was Danny Ainge. 16/6/3, All-Star at his best, elite shooter, would kill it today with his combo of skill and athleticism. Tenacious, capable of fitting in alongside stars.

If we'd done 3 more rounds, I probably would have gone with some funky binkie types. Antoine Walker not being taken is a travesty.

Ainge was on my shortlist for the Fred Brown pick. Shooter. Defender. Secondary ball-handler & passer. Ainge checked a lot of boxes.

Another combo guard which I wanted in my 3rd stringer. I passed up some superior one position guards (SG or PG) in favour of a combo guard.

And mine with the Hawkins pick. Both were dead eye shooters but I preferred Hawkins’ defense as well as his pedigree in more of a lead role.

Daryl Dawkins was a guy I was eyeing up as a 5th big.

I thought he would be a fun choice. Big, physical, strong, quick, athletic. Can play both the PF and C positions. Some skills on offense. Good low post scorer. Some short and midrange shooting. Strong defender. Strong rebounder.

Voting is now open! If you would like to PM me your ballot, ranked 1-11 (excluding yourself) or 1-12 if you're a non-participant, with 1 being your favourite team, that would be terrific. Thanks all

One question -- is this inclusive of playoffs or just who would do the best in the regular season?

Hm, I hadn't really considered that question. My approach is to vote for who I think is 'best', which to me involves which team I think would succeed in a season + playoff type scenario.
