A straight down the line historical draft would be perfectly fun too. It's such a fun exercise - learning about random guys who had epic seasons is great. No need for obscurity, just spitballing

We've done that a few times, but maybe to make it more interesting, you can't pick anyone from the 75th anniversary team (so the top 76 guys aren't eligible).  Still get some great players, but vast majority of the all timers aren't eligible.

If we do a historical draft, starters have ro be starters for the year we pick.   Bench players need to be bench players the year we pick.

I’m interested. Would prefer some sort of in between historical and current- maybe a 90s/2000’s to now? I think it always gets difficult to figure out how to compare guys from the 50s/60s to today- and trying to figure out how the rules translate.

That is an interesting idea. Easier to navigate than some other parameters.

Good point - the evaluation aspect can be difficult. It can also be somewhat overwhelming with a draft pool of approx. 5000 players.

My interpretation of historical drafts is that you can pick guys from the season just gone by too, if you wanted that season.

@wdleehi, your starting v bench distinction is intriguing. It may be difficult with the tracking of starting occurring in 1979, but I'm sure we can nut it out.

What are people's comfort levels re: minimum amount of GMs? We have 8 so far, I would ideally like a minimum of 12-14 or so, just so it's not a team of 5 superstars for everyone and people have to get a little bit more creative.

Yeah, I like a cut-off point for some of those early guys. I'd go 1965 onwards.  I feel most guys from 1965-75 are comfortable enough to figure out but some of those guys from the 50s are tough to rate. Or you could go later with 1980 onwards.

Those double decade drafts like 80s/90s or 90s/00s area always interesting as well.

I wouldn't mind a post-1980 historical draft, exclusive of players in the NBA 75. Or even just a post-79/80. Could still select guys who played in the 70s, but only if they made it to the cutoff period. Would have interest impacts on the values of certain guys

It depends on how we want to approach it. We've done 'playoffs' before, where people 'pitch' their team and we vote. Other times we've had a master-thread where people explain their team, philosophy, how they'll play, and why they deserve to win. We then collate votes from everyone (GMs and observers alike), and compile that to determine which team we like the most.

For a longer explanation, if you have far too much time to burn, it might be worth having a look at some of the previous threads from years gone by. You can see how the drafting, trading, team-building and ranking all goes.
