Lucky, thanks for the thoughtful comments
IP, I like your team. Some questions:
1. Ariza at the 4: if Donte Green is "rail-thin" at 226 pounds, and is more of a 3 than a 4, how do you foresee Ariza being effective at the 4 in a small-ball lineup? I have a hard time envisioning Ariza handling even smaller PFs (like a Maxiell, Powe, or Millsap type).
I as time progresses, I see ariza both getting bigger and stronger. He's been about to go 2/3/4 but I see him more as a battier type, going exclusive 3/4. It will maximize his quick feet and hands. Now I don't pretend that he wouldn't get killed on the offensive end by the 4's that make their buck by being tough guys, but his length quickness and hustle gives him a distinct advantage on offense and in transition, which is what I'd be wanting to exploit.
I see my "small ball/microwave offense" lineup like this:
Daniels/Conley/Brandon Roy
Almond/Roy/Daniels
Demetris Nichols/Almond
Trevor Ariza
Channing Frye
This is not a team I see playing more than 5-8 mins a night, probably mostly to close out quarters. They'll get up and down the court and hopefully hit some distance shots.
In future years I see
Conley/Green (Taurean)
Almond
Nichols
Greene (Donte)
Ariza
Before I let this cat outta the yard (is that even a saying?), I need all these guys to get time, and see a distinct dedication to hustle and effort on defense, esp a desire to responsibly gamble on steals.
2. When, not if, Roy loses time to an injury--I love the guy, but he's got health issues; I was shocked to see he weighs nearly 230 lbs, he needs to drop 10-15 for the sake of his knees and ankles--who steps up to be the emotional leader of the team?
I think as far as an emotional leader, I did a good job making sure there will always be one. Caron Butler and Deshawn stevenson led that wizards team into a playoff spot without self proclaimed 'wizard of oz' Gilbert Arenas. I think that was mostly Caron Butler, and I think he could do it again.
As far as a backup 2, until I see more of Morris Almond (who I really do think is an NBA capable shooting guard), Im pretty screwed if Brandon Roy goes down for more than 12-13 games in one season.
3. I like the fact that you have a clearly defined 9-man rotation. Sometimes, less is more. Who becomes the backup PG of the future as Daniels gets on in years? Do you foresee using Roy at the PG slot?
Taurean Green is the guy I see there. I think he'll be a really good backup PG in a year or two. I do see playing Brandon Roy at the point also.
